  1. i have a few friends that i tie with, but for the most part, i started by reading and taught myself and have never taken a course. every now and then people give me tips but that has been about it. good luck, practice, practice, practice and enjoy tying
  2. hey there. if you are in calgary try the hook and hackle club. they do have beginner lessons. talk to troutfitters - i think they will be doing lessons this winter - ask big bad brent for info. i also waiting to find out about Fly Tie Tuesdays. no word yet if it is running this year hey SJW! have you heard anything???? also try UK Fly Dressers - these guys are great for step by step and lots of advice for beginners. flyangler.ca has some great patterns good luck and happy tying
  3. lol. sure. i'll let you know. i'll find out at the next meeting.
  4. it all goes back to the John Ridder movie 'Skin deep' and the glow in the dark condom war... yep details best left unexplained
  5. well i cant speak from personal experience, but my ex-husband had bone fusion graft surgery exactly a year ago - oct 26th or 27 2006. he had his neck done, C5-6 6 months previous to that he had herniated the disc, lost muscle mass on the left tricep & pectoral. feeling in the same areas as well as for arm and thumb, forefinger was either like pins and needles or gone completely. his muscle strength has come back some but will probably never be the same, the tingley sensations come and go but are much better. and he played contact foot ball a little this summer. he has taken up the dirt bike again and riding hard and falling down. give it some time, you should be up and fishing again.
  6. i can let you know now from the samples and a fly that i have (tied with fritz) that it is a very good product and certainly worth the money. once received, i will do a list of the items and post the package cost and deliver/customs. i think to buy each package is around 2GBP so about 3.95CAD. which is comparable to stuff here. but if you by the special priced packages of stuff you get a great deal.
  7. AL, it is similar to flashabou, however, i picked up some glow in the dark flashabou yesterday. the mylar is more like mylar tinsle except rather then being gold or silver, it is glow in the dark -that phosphorus whiteish green colour and in stead of coming on a spool, it is packaged in thin strips like the krystal flash. the material lays flat as for the flashabou, packaged the same way but is more of a green colour and is crinckly like krystal flash and the glow didnt last as long. ** i'm very interested in the results of this. although yes it does take 100 to 1000 of the same fly to get it perfect. obviouly no one will sit down and tie that many at one time. but i was surpised that even just doing 12 to 20 of each fly they were getting better. i have also found something interesting. the hockey pool swap is 12 different flies vs the other swaps that are 12 of the same. i have found that i can sit down and do 12 different flies without getting distracted by the tv, dog, neighbours kids, computer, ex husband or what have you. yet if i start tying 12 of the same, i might get through 4 before something breaks my consentration. i also found that the improvement effects are residual. if i tie four of 1 kind one day and tie 3 the next, the next 3 are better than the first and so on. but hey i fish, you cant expect me to sit down and tie a 1000 of the same fly. ** AL, i'm also feeling this way about headlights and olive green marabou. enough fluff.
  8. This is an interesting article. personally, i get distracted quickly, i tie a few of each pattern and move on to another to create something else. I find i am always excited to make something new or try a new material. a different style of hook or the same pattern just with different colours. After reading the article I thought back to the recent swaps i have participated in, where i actually had to sit down and tie 12 or more of the same pattern. I discovered that by tying 12 or so of the same pattern with out getting distracted and off topic, the last 7-8 flies were more uniform than the first few. I just wonder how many people can go to their bench and tie 10 plus flies of the same pattern, same colour everytime they tie vs. me, who usually cant tie more than 3 of the same kind without some change. of course i end up with bits of fluff, feathers, thread, patches of fur and strands of glow in the dark mylar motion everywhere Tour de France therory of Fly Tying
  9. oh sigh. i am so not patient. i just want my straggle and stroogle fritz at least i have samples from AL. thanks all.

  12. why do you hate the nail knot? if i can do it perched on the side of cliff haning over a gorge, rod under one arm, spool of leader line in my teeth, death grip on the rock face with an elbow and a toe and using a piece of grass as 'nail' anyone can do it with a little practice i only ask so i can give you an alternative
  13. once i stop laughing i will address the zoot suit. meetings are everyother wednesday. 1st and 4th of every month except in the summer july aug. they do welcome guests at no charge to come for a meeting. there are no minimum meetings you have to attend not that i am ever socially awkward being the social buttefly that i am. although the older generation has no idea what to do with this 30ish girl running around talking to everyone, they seem to relax once they realize i can hold up my end of the conversation. i would go alone but would rarely end up sitting by myself LF, if you are serious about going to the dinner, that would be great, i promise not to make you dance if you promise not to where a zoot suit. unles of course you have the same body type and height as Will Smith. so far of everyone i have met only Max only fits that bill. LOL Tahst dpoe YO

  22. correct me if i am wrong but here is the therory that has always been told to me... pacific salmon return to the fresh water at the end of its life cycle to die, which is approx 4 years. once they enter the fresh water they cant metabolize the oxygen through their gills as well as in salt water, they also stop eating. they colour change occurrs from lack of oxygen and the salmon basically has enough fat/engery stores built up to get to the part of the river where they need to spawn. once they get there, they cant get back, not enough O2 or energy stores as for steelhead. adaptation over time allowed for a fresh water fish to survive in salt water. i seem to remember reading somewhere that salt water has a higher O2 content - but dont quote me on that. so since the trout was already able to survive in fresh water with the lower O2 level, the transition to the ocean was neglegible. steelhead continue to feed once they return to spawn. it also seem to me that steelhead have a longer life cycle allowing for 2 or 3 spawns. or something like that when i'm not so zoned out and in need of sleep - i will go and research this topic
