Whether its economically viable or not isn't the issue here. Thats the chicken raisers' concern. The issue is if someone should be banned from doing it without just cause. This has been a very interesting thread so far but I haven't seen any arguments justifying forcing my neighbour to twist his chickens' necks. Disease, noise, neglect (and scorn for hippy tree huggers :-) ) are the only arguments I've seen so far and that can happen with cat ladies and puppy mills. If anything should be banned, it should be body piercings, hip-hop and mohawks (what's with that, anyway?)

When I moved into my house in Renfrew about 10 yrs ago, I discovered my neighbour had been raising them for years (Colourful Italian. I like Italians. He passed away. Chickens are gone now). He didn't do it for trendy reasons. About 6 bantam's and a rooster. We heard the rooster every once in a while and I liked the sound. He kept them in a little coup that was heated. I don't think he brought them in during the winter. That would be creepy. I've heard of people keeping pigs as pets. And rabbits. And gerbils. And dogs. All edible in some cultures so can be classified as stock. The arguments against chickens can be used on all of these. I agree a line has to be drawn somewhere but I don’t think a few chickens will turn Calgary into a third world. If it gets out of hand, then rethink it. If a neighbour complains to by-law, they investigate. (Have you heard about the cat lady down the street??) Now fire pits……those should be banned outright (just kidding).

So everyone is staying away on principle? I can guarantee you there are people who can't afford it. Maybe the people who used to fish 9 and now only 3 are staying away 6 days on principle? Actually, it is ONLY about the experience. It had nothing to do with the fish. A person digging a hole in their backyard, stocking it with fish and charging admission is not comparable to a public natural resource (so I don't feel hypocritical and I didn't displace anyone because I had more money then them). No question people will pay more for a better experience and the crafters of the AMP knew it. Question is, was it just? That is the creative problem solving I'm talking about. Its not based on ability to pay. Bravo. No doubt more $ is a good thing but does the ends justify the means? Was there more equitable ways to raise funds? Jacking up the cost of something to limit access has its victims. Maybe they deserve it. They should work harder to go to school or whatever or should have been born to a richer family, but the fact remains their ability to access the river was diminished. Ah. "Trash" fish. I don't see why the people who wanted the Elk to themselves couldn't do the same thing. Maybe they didn't want that kind of experience? If decisions about fisheries management are being made based solely on the fishing experience and not the fish, doesn't that make us a bunch of selfish greedy snobs? The higher the price, the less people on the water and the better it will be for *me*. I think we're forgetting that a lot of people don't eat and breathe fishing. They may be camping in the area and may have a rod in the trunk and may want do a bit of fishing to kill time only to discover the cost of that two hour excursion. Natural resources belong to everyone, not just us. What is their perception of fanatical anglers forming committees and sitting in a room trying to come up with ways to make their fishing experience more enjoyable? They may not agree with those of us with our Z-axis' with 2500 reels and Simms waders. I, for one, don't want to see what's happen in the UK and elsewhere. Where the common folk are relegated to fishing for trash fish because they can't afford a membership on an absconded exclusive river running through their backyard. The attitude I see emerging around me is just the first step down this slippery slope. Remember, I’m only talking about AMP’s based solely on the fishing experience. I don’t know what the solution should be for truly troubled waters. Total ban? Only residents? Only residents and rich aliens? Lotteries? Rusty may want to shake the hands of those who stay away on principle even though they can afford it but I’m wonder if those who can’t would want to shake back (no offence intended, Rusty. Just a different point of view). (ps. Jack Laydon would be proud of me, eh?)

Not much to offer other then the obvious. If you are finding fish on the end of your line that you didn't expect, then the fly to indie length is too long. 12 feet of leader in 3 feet of water (mended upstream) could give your fish 16 feet of undetected strike (12 - 3 = 8 feet in front of the fish to 8 feet behind it).

That surprises me too because I live in Renfrew and have never experience anything described, even though I have ADAC just down the block.

Ditto. When my right arm was injured, I didn't want to stress it any further by casting *and* fighting a fish with my right hand. Since I catch a fish on average, every second cast, I decided to switch up. Now that my arm is better, I never found a reason to go back. Interesting tidbit......clasp your hands together, interlocking your fingers...... Now, take a look at which thumb is on top. Is it your right or left thumb? That hand is supposed to be your dominant hand even if you didn't think so. Try it the opposite way. Feels awkward, eh? The theory is that society teaches us to be right handed and kids grow up with teachers putting pencils in their right hand, etc. I found that when I spring this on people without tell them and they say they are right handed but their left thumb in on top, I ask them if they do the occasional thing left handed (hold a hockey stick, etc.) they almost always say they do. Any closet south paws here?
