I Hate This Campaign Already...
jgib01 replied to jpinkster's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Messin' with Jefferson quotes... Dave, they are gonna take your NFA card away for that one! -
As much as I hate to say it, I wonder if a region-wide closure may have been a better tactic. Additional pressure on Upper Oldman area and Crow can't be a good thing. Based on the email, it looks like they may be taking a week-to-week approach with this, so might not see anything further until next Monday/Tuesday.

I Hate This Campaign Already...
jgib01 replied to jpinkster's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Nope, sure didn't. My frame of civil liberty is impacted very little by firearm registries or restrictions on the type of firearms one is allowed to legally possess here, hence it not being an election issue for me. Last time I checked, part of my "freedom" was being able to make conscious decisions about what factors are personally most important to weigh when deciding who to cast my ballot for (I think our Charter might say something along those lines in the "fundamentals" section). You go ahead and tell me all you want what you think is an important element of my freedom, and I can choose to agree or disagree... ain't Canada great! BTW, the Supreme Court has disagreed about firearm ownership being a right/freedom in Canada. -

So, you must lie awake at night worrying that the government is going to come and take your truck away (along with your house, marriage and kids). After all, they're all registered with the government, no?! Hate to tell you this, but the gun registry is so far off my "give-a-damn" radar that it would take something awfully radical on either side of the spectrum to make it an election issue for me (and probably the same goes for the other 70+% of non gun owning Canadians). Maybe I'd be more passionate if I was a hunter. -
Good to know. Now here's hopin' I never have to use the warranty on mine. So long as I don't let my near-teenage son touch it, I think I stand a better chance. He is a little hard on rods (not Winstons), having lost a couple sections of one and a broken tip on another in the past couple months.

So, is this a case of lack of knowledge (hard to believe none of the folks there knew not of what they were doing), or a lack of desire to abide by the law? I think I am going to request a face to face with my MLA, who happens to be the Minister of Environment and Parks. Would you mind Copper if I showed her these? Along with the nice collection of other examples that are amassing here on FFC.

Say it isn't so... you writing about politics on FFC?!! And a "pannenkoek huis" (those things are hella good by the way). My apologies to the Dutch, but I tried my best with google to get spellings. -
There are times when social media is clearly used inappropriately, for bullying and harassment with tragic results (Rehtaeh Parsons). Lots of examples out there, particularly of youth, who have been "shamed" through social media where the tidal wave of vituperative attention is harmful for them and their families. I think these are the cases where everyone would agree that social media shaming is a bad thing. Then there are cases where the social media backlash is more understandable... in case you've been completely offline for the last few days, just google Walter Parsons. Even in these kinds of cases, things often go to far. Do I personally think Walter's lion hunt was reprehensible, and that negative consequences for his business/career as a dentist are understandable -- yup. Do I think he deserves to be physically threatened, and have calls for him to be extradited and hanged -- nope (too far). For another, closer-to-home but perhaps cloudier example, look at Eddie Parent. He's the fellow dubbed by social media last year as the Ontario "muskie hater" after a youtube video captured him clubbing a muskie and tossing the dead fish back in the water. In the video, there's a heated discussion where he says some not too flattering things about the fish species and what should happen to them. The youtube video and attention it mustered resulted in an arguably deserved fine of $1000 and loss of fishing license for 2 years. Score one for social media! But online comments calling him an "evil monster" and the threats of harm he has subsequently received (like "club him") venture to the other side of acceptable. We haven't lost all vestiges of the village stock. Still have our right to attend court hearings, and to publish the outcomes of most of them (save when victims rights to privacy are jeopardized or when the offender is a youth). You could argue that the reason for this is so that we have an open and public justice system that people can trust in, but I think the real motivation is just as much for the shaming effects as well. Our new reality is that information (and judgement) now spreads at light speed. Going to take our global culture a while to figure out the balance.

He's pretty good with the woolly buggers you showed him how to tie... next year's expo you can move him on to large artculated pike flies please

There Aren't Words Enough To Describe The Hatred...

Did they ever release names on the Upper Oldman group of 6, or do we have to wait for the court date? Any FFC folk from Pincher wanna go hang out in Court on Sept 29th and let us know the outcome? -
Heading to Sooke next week. Guess I'll leave the rod at home... Like I woulda had time to fish anyway at a Scout Jamboree . Afternoon water temps on the Crow last weekend were between 15 and 18. Can only imagine they're higher now.

14 Days Or The Entire Season...

Couldn't be for a Scout group... as a leader, half the fun of Scouts is watching the youth carry water. Builds character -
I haven't found French Man's Creek yet either Is it contradictory for me to kinda agree with both BlackAnt and Lornce? Lots of great advice on here has come my way in the past year, along with some criticism, for example for "hotspotting" for the mere mention of one of our southern rivers (and not a small, hidden, high elevation creek either). When you post on any public forum, you need to be prepared to take the good with the bad & ugly I suppose. Wish I had something to offer you about the Bow, but that water is way up North for a Lethbian like me. In fact, I'm venturing north tomorrow to meet up with some folks from here to learn from them on some skinny water. I did take the intro course from the McLennan's last year, and am wading through his book right now... great stuff! I can only imagine that Jim's course on the Bow would be excelllent.

I think that example is maybe an exception to the weight difference. The ones I have been looking at in 9' versus 10' have tended to weigh in at about 1/2 an ounce difference. Maybe some other factors might come into play too, like balance point, and maybe a slightly larger size of a reel as a result (I'm really reaching here I think). But even accounting for all that, I'm not sure an amateur like me would notice even a half ounce difference over the course of an outing, would I?

Preference for those that do... when wearing neoprene socks... do you wear regular socks underneath?

Thanks for the words of wisdom folks. Tried to toss one of these the other night with my 6wt, and for some strange reason it just wasn't cutting it 😀

Anyone have experience or thoughts on the use of 10' rods in heavier weights, say 8wt and up? I'm looking for a pike rod, and noticed a 10' 8wt for sale here. That got me thinking about the actual benefits or challenges of a longer rod in this category. I've certainly read that there is some added benefit of longer rods for mending/line control, but that is probably moot for my purposes. Any other thoughts generally on the +/- of a ten footer?

Backpacking In Glacier Np (Montana)
jgib01 replied to ÜberFly's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Never tented there before, but love the Going-to-the-Sun. If you haven't found their plowing pics yet, they're a hoot. Lots of trails were still closed in mid-July last year when we were there, but looks like maybe less snow this year, so hopefully will be a bit drier by the time you are heading out. -
Thanks, and duly noted! Good thing there's no zipper on my waders, or something might have been visible there too

Not necessarily in the rank of "awesome" for some of you, but as I just started on the fly last August, this was pretty darn sweet for me! And yes, I know I am not holding in the prescribed manner... I was doing well to land it, and lucky my better half was there with her camera for a couple of quick pics. Managed to get it back in the water without dropping it, and watched it quickly and happily swim back to deeper waters. Overall, quite the success! In the second pic, you might notice that I am almost standing on my rod... good thing for the Orvis guarantee, as I'm pretty sure I will need to use it at some point.
