  1. Sage advice. She was my most reliable fishing buddy until we spawned recently! More than anything, I have grave reservations about the durability of the waders and there's nothing worse than having to sit out most of the season because of dodgy equipment. [Pet peeve: high quality waders for women are rarer than hen's teeth.] Orvis is blowing out the Mirage reels at half price, so the difference would cover most of the difference between the silver sonic convertibles and the silver sonic guides. I seem to recall that a few years back Orvis had so many problems with their waders that a lot of shops stopped carrying them, but I'm stuck with them.
  2. So my darling wife got bored on her academic days and, knowing that I needed waders and a new reel for my 3wt, bought me some Christmas presents. However, she doesn't know much about gear and didn't solicit my advice, so what she bought is a tad bizarre. I don't want to unnecessarily hurt her feelings by exchanging these items, but neither do I want to end up throwing good money after bad. Waders - Orvis Silver Sonic Convertibles. These seem like nicer versions of your typical lightweight waders, but my experience with lightweight waders consisted of using them a few times, waiting 2 months for warranty, using the replacement pair a few times, waiting 3 months for warranty, and giving up and buying something more durable. It doesn't help that most of my fishing involves epic bushwacks on streams like Stauffer. Anyone know if these buck the trend or if they are a PITA? Reel - CFO. I know that these have a following amoung collectors, but they strike me as being akin to brazed steel bicycle frames in the age of carbon fiber - i.e. one uses one not because it is the best tool for the job, but because one want to use a CFO. Meanwhile they are selling the top of the line Mirage for $150 less. Worth hanging onto from a utilitarian perspective?
  3. It really depends on how resilient the spores are. Certainly bacterial spores would laugh at your efforts, but these are Cnidaria. It's not obvious from the reading I've done and BurningChrome is right that a negative is hard to prove. I assume they are using a PCR based assay, but while very specific, those aren't always all that sensitive. (Really interesting life cycle though. I had no idea there were fresh water Cnidaria!)
  4. Nice things about korkers: easy to swap or replace soles Bad things about korkers: lethal "[not the slightest bit] sticky rubber" soles, boots don't last much longer than soles, so so support
  5. I agree, but as has been pointed out elsewhere, in the case of another event like 2013, these dry damns would merely delay the inevitable for a matter of hours. They are driven by political optics, nothing more.
  6. Chrome - you seem far more concerned about threats against the dogs than by the very explicit threats this man has made against the lives of PEOPLE.
  7. The threshold for the use of lethal force against an animal is "behaves in a threatening fashion". Just running up to you barking meets that, much less this!
  8. A couple of years ago the tying section got severely pillaged by a pre-Christmas sale and stayed that way forever. The guys said that they were aware of the problem, but had no wherewithal to order anything, as that was done elsewhere and those responsible were indifferent to the lost sales.
  9. Note also that government debt is unique because our currency is based on it. It is literally true that if there was no government debt, there would not be a single Canadian dollar in circulation. What matters is not the total debt, but the debt to GDP ratio. It does not work like a credit card, though you wouldn`t be able to tell from all the wrong-headed conservative scare mongering.
  10. There were a lot (!!) of them around Medicine Hat this spring.
  11. Consistent isn't good enough - should read without exception regardless of circumstance. Some owners have that level of control and it is very impressive, but they are a tiny minority. Scel - I apologize if my posts have been overly pugnacious and if you can get your dog to the level described above, I don't mind meeting him on the river. That said, I would caution that most all owners believe they have that level of control, yet dog attacks kill 2-3 Albertans every year, maim 20-30 beyond recognition, and send another 1000+ to the ER. By way of contrast, we average ~1 bear attack and 0 cougar attacks, yet we all carry bear spray and and Cypress Hills is plastered with signs espousing cougar awareness.....
  12. As someone who until recently put 20k+km/year on a bike, I've been attacked by a lot of dogs (many, like scel's are fond of attacking cyclists). Some had their tails up and wagging, some had their tails level, some held their tails low, some barked, some growled, and others were silent. The one thing they all had in common was an owner utterly convinced that their little darling would never hurt a fly, or that if they did our was the fly 's fault, regardless of the dog's often lengthy rap sheet. Also had to pull and even use my bear spray on aggressive, illegally off leash dogs on the river, most egregiously in k country where they are strictly forbidden. Something about the outfit freaks them out and otherwise same dogs often get crazy territorial in the backcountry. I won't be taking any chances.
  13. Probably, but I've never taken to the internet to defend the practice or threaten to assault anyone affected by my criminal behaviour, as above.
  14. So at which level does the law start to apply to you?
  15. Heaven forbid that a guy clean his quad on a stream in the middle of no where - what harm could it do?
  16. Livingstone was 53 yesterday morning, rising to 59 by mid afternoon. Keep your shirts on.
  17. Only relevant if you hold their humanity in any regard or believe they have something positive to contribute to the world. Can't say that I do.
  18. Foam like you use to tie flies: fly shop, craft shop
  19. If you can beg, borrow, or steal a chain measuring tool, take it with you. If the chain is very worn out, chances are that the drivetrain is too, in which case you need to tag on another $2-300 to replace it. If is isn't worn, test all the gears on your test ride by stomping on the pedals in each of them. If it skips, again, the drivetrain is worn.
  20. CJ - you should make sure his viscous dog gets put down as well. Then sue.
  21. I gagged this summer when I left the neoprene socks I use for wet wading wet in the back of the truck for a couple of days....and then opened the cap. They required a few washes and a bit of bleach.
  22. No worries aaa. rickr - it's televised live on sportsnet1. Today starts at 18:00. For other stages, see here: http://tourofalberta.ca/site/watch-the-tour/
