Beat Down @ Police
Tpetey replied to eagleflyfisher's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Other than the narrowed road to the 'launch' and the lack of staging/parking area you'd think there's plenty of room for more than one or two guys to physically launch a boat at policemans now. -
Vegas Hotels ( On The Strip )

I'm a fan of the mirage, location is great. TI is alright too, normally a little cheaper. -
Whitefish Catches On The Bow Since Flood Event

I got a large one on Sunday, their still there -
I was ok in 4x4 the other night at mck, soft but manageable. There was a fellow in a mini van that was stuck, probably pretty happy when I showed up! I wouldn't drive out there without 4x, there's gotta be some soft spots in that gravel

When Do You Think We Can Float?
Tpetey replied to mkonnert's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Glenmore is not, policemans is not. Well, maybe it is, you'd have to get to it though. Mck is probably ok, but you'd have to get to it. Carseland is not. Going to be a tough floating season... -

What I was trying to say is the safety boom is not installed upstream of the carsland weir as of last weekend -
Carseland Weir Rescue

Not to downplay someone's stupidity for attempting to go over the weir...but when we floated down there last weekend the safety boom was not across the river. Since I've floated down there hundreds of times I'm aware of the weir and boat launch locations. Some weekend warrior with his Walmart raft may not have known, sad, but you'd thunk the safety line should be across the river this time of year. Don't be stupid, know what to expect and where your going! -
Use them all the time, never a problem or a worry

Probably about a 6hr straight float right now

Not sure if I'm too late to chirp in but we went the used Hyde route 3 years ago and I'd do it again no problem. We drove to the border to pick it up as they said it was easier for us to clear with a used boat than it was for them. Boat was exactly as they said, and there had been many pictures exchanged back and forth. They had all the paperwork in order and we were in and out of customs within 30min. Biggest hassle was getting the trailer registered, and that wasn't really too bad. Let me know if theres anything else you need to know. Pull the trigger on the deal, the guys at Hyde are great to deal with.

There's going to be a whitewater, kayak side and a choppy floating side. As you can see the whitewater is on river left, i think it's 4 drops when it's all done. The choppy side is river right, shouldn't be any rougher than some natural choppy river sections.

Boat Launch Report - March 14 2010
Tpetey replied to pepper's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
We got pontoons over the ice on Saturday, I'd say that the ice is maybe...6ft high? I don't remember when i was standing there if I could see over it or not... I think if some ice had fallen the right way you'd be able to drag the drift boat up the 'ramp' no problem. If it gets as warm as it's supposed to yesterday and today, I'd say the ice will take a major hit and drift boats won't be a problem. Only other thing to take into consideration right now is the river level. The river is really low! Way lower than the fall. Lots of places where there were 'new rocks' and gravel bars that we had to walk across with the toons. Happy Floating! -
I'm pretty sure that anything over 1.2m (4ft) requires an engineer stamped drawing within the city. A wall constructed to 47" (3' 11") requires nothing, something to take into consideration when picking your final wall height. The biggest thing take care of when building the do-it-yourself concrete block wall is drainage and bedding. You need to make sure you have a good 6" of drain rock under the wall (that actually drains somewhere) and a hard level surface to start the wall from. A quality landscaping fabric between the drain and level surface will keep the materials septate and the wall from sagging.

Las Vegas (info Please)
Tpetey replied to bigbowtrout's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
My advice, skip the house/condo thing. Get a room or rooms on the strip and let loose, a suite would be alright if you can find one at a reasonable price. We've done 2 Vegas stage and they were all EPIC, not quite the hangover but close enough. -
Anyone been DS of the confluence this week? With the return of the cold weather I'd assume that the melt has been put on pause for a little while.
-
Open wallet? What additional fees are charged at the border? I've head about the $200 RIV application fee and GST on the boat and trailer. I've heard mixed stories about duty?
-
I've recently purchased a drift boat from Hyde, based in Idaho. I will be going to pick up my new, used, boat in the next couple weeks. Has anyone gone through this process with Canada Customs/Border Services yada yada yada? Any advice/suggestions would be VERY helpful!

Took another drive last night. It looks like the ice starts to build at the top of the stretch above the confluence. There were a few bergs floating down and piling up, may just be a ice dam...? Maybe open water below, I wouldn't think so, but maybe.

While I'm sure I'm not the only one with the itch to get the pontoon/drift boat into the water. I took a drive yesterday, had the wife with me so I couldn't do much walking and I had a look at things. The city looks clean, with the excepting of a little ice on the banks in spots. Policemans looks really good, compared to years past where I remember way more ice, the launch is actually almost clean. The bad news is Mckinnons is frozen solid, bank to bank! Does anyone know where the ice starts to back up, any predictions as to when there will be about 6 feet of open water so a guy can float down? I'm assuming that Cottonwood is where it starts, anyone been down there on foot this weekend? Hows the confluence looking? Thanks for the help!

I have a minkota 34lb thrust for my 10' pontoon boat. If your just slowly cruising around the lake my battery will last 4-6 hours. If you've got it full out moving from one spot to another your probably looking at about 2-3 hours. The 34lb on the one man boat is LOTS! It's very hard to stear so I normally put it as straight as I can get it and then stear with one or both of the paddles.

There should be nothing on the bow that will scare you. The odd big rock, concrete block or sweeper are about all that can hurt. There are a few spots you'll find this time of year that are too shallow, and end up walking to find deeper water. The biggest advice I can give you is to keep an oar in the water, not the downstream one! You'll find yourself looking for an oar if times get tough and you need to move quickly.

That was the sole purpose of the weir, it's still in service today. The new 'falls' will do the same thing, just drop the water the height of the weir over a longer distance making it 'safe' to pass by boat. There will still be a safety boom on one side of the river. This will aim to keep people away from the intake gates of the irrigation canal. Found this on the internet, it's a pretty picture. It looks like the weir is still in place, that will be the first 'falls' in the series.

Ok, so I'm going to turn this question into a product endorsement. In less that one week, 3 1/2 business days, I'm back in action. The welds on my pontoon boat frame came apart last Saturday, Sept 13th. I contacted Outcast by phone on Monday morning and discussed the problem with their repair shop. I e-mailed pictures and descriptions after discussing the problem with them. On Tuesday morning I called back to confirm that they had received my e-mail, they had and we're just discussing the issue. An hour later they called me back and said that they would ship me a new frame, not just the replacement part but an entire new frame. The frame was shipped UPS from their office Tuesday afternoon, was in transit on Wednesday and I just received it before lunch today, Thursday Sept 18th. In a city/world were good customer service often goes unrecognized I would like to recognize the way that outcast has handled this situation. I have been completely satisfied with my pontoon boat up to this point and assume that if I have any further problems with it that outcast will handle them in the same way that they handled it this time. If it ever comes time for a second boat purchase or other gear, Outcast will be the product of choice.

Does anyone have experience with Outcast and their warranty? I've had my pontoon boat for 6 months and today i had my eyes opened. I was floating along and two or the frame welds split open. Luckily the top half of the weld held, but the frame was not stable to say the least. I'm pretty sure that this will be covered by warranty but I was just wndering is someone could give me some heads up before I make the call.
