  1. I think that Fish Tales has larger spools of lead. They are about 4" high and as big around as a beer can. I dont know if the price is right. but easy to source. Andrew
  2. I think this is a change in the business model at Simms to support their transition into other markets besides fly fishing. If you look at some of the recent offerings from Simms, they have branched out into hiking shoes, and clothing that appeals to a wider outdoor audience. I dont see it as a bad thing for fly shops, in fact it may be better as non-fisher people come to fly shops looking for Simms outdoor clothing. My mom goes to Fish Tales to buy Croc's shoes because the have a good selection, but she never fishes. It is the same path that companies like Burton, North Face, Columbia have taken. Go from a specific niche market, to a wider one while still servicing your foundation. It makes good business sense, especially if it is needed to ensure that Simm's can keep offering quality fly fishing gear. By boycotting Simms, it will hurt your local fly shop as well unless you buy a different brand. For me, Simms is the right combination of form, function, and price. I like their gear more than the other brands out there like so really boycotting Simms is cutting off my nose to spite my face, but I will continue to support my local fly shop. The nice thing about fly shops is that if you can order it from the Simms web site the store can get it too, and you likely wont get nailed for shipping. Andrew
  3. I got a iPhone with Telus last week, but had the same issue. I called Shaw & the guy was really helpful. He had to change some settings on his end to get it to work, but it only took a couple of minutes. The documentation on Shaw's website is not much help, but I would give Shaw a call & see if they can help. Andrew
  4. The technique worked very well. I used it for both. I FG taped the end of the scarfs on the sides & the rest of the sides are resin over wood. I did one with the technique & the other without. I think the side with the overlay helped soak the FG tape, especially after it was smoothed with the roller. Overall I am extremely happy with it. The finish looks like glass, I would have never been able to get it that smooth with any other technique. I did the first coat just with the foam roller & then did the overlay technique on the second coat. Count on having to use a new sheet each time, you may be able to reuse it if you are careful. Next time I will use .020" PetG vs. the .030. It is easier to work with. Here is a diagram showing the theory at work.
  5. Sharks Caddis? love those too. Look awesome when wet. A
  6. Check ebay too, some good prices there. With that said, Canadian Llama is great too. Andrew
  7. Yes, just like that. I LOL'ed when he said it was old school. Personally I just don't trust braided loops. I like to tie the nail knot with a straw rather than a nail, I find it easier to keep it all together. Like this http://www.animatedknots.com/nailknot/index.php Andrew
  8. Nail knot on a piece of heavy test mono to the end of you fly line, assuming you cut off the loop. Put some UV glue on the knot to prevent the braid in you line from getting wet & secure the knot. Use a loop to loop connection from the mono to your leader. Andrew
  9. The one that is directly behind Fish Tales is a Holiday Inn Express. Andrew
  10. I cant vouch for these guys, but they are in Calgary http://www.eastsideboatworks.com A
  11. Yes, in the case of a framed boat the chine replaces fillet that you would make on the S&G boat. A couple of those bulkhead are temporary and will be replaced with ribs. Since I am not working from a plan I wanted the option to experiment a little with widths and the angle of the sides, especially in the front. A
  12. Rather than clog up Mike's FS thread with my boat stuff here is an update on the pointless boat. I took a new job this summer so that really cut into my free time, and it seemed when it came down to fishing vs. doing boat building I opted to go fishing. At least when I'm fishing there are not another 100 things staring me in the face that need to get done. Here are some pics with some explanation. Left the garage door open that night to find the boat & garage covered in midges. oops These are what the boat sides look like before going in my basement for epoxy resin. In case you were wondering my wife was out of town when this shot was taken. Couple of coat of epoxy and my secret make it smooth technique for that wet look. http://duckworksmagazine.com/03/r/articles/glass/bottom.htm Back to the garage Jr. sanding some cuts before I screw up cutting the transom. So lately i have been laying out how I want the transoms to fit. Not working from a set of plans definitely makes things more difficult. Andrew
  13. Our fan is on a dial, like a rotary dimmer switch, on the wall by the switch to turn it on. At high speed it does whine pretty good. A
  14. Look for a unit with a fan in it. In our old house we had a unit without one and in our new one we have the fan. The fan pushes the heat out in to the room making it heat the space better. Personally, I would look for a little bit quieter fan as the one we have now is a little noisy but I don't know if they make different fans or not. A
  15. You know, inzulated - how doz germanz sayz it. Or just me trying to type on my tablet computer. A
  16. Look for Ansell Solvex glove at Princess Auto. They are the same thickness as dish washing gloves
  17. The green gloves are made of Nitrile. If you are looking for them they usually have then at Princess Auto. They are used commonly for chemical handling. If you cant find them let me know. I may beable to give you some depending on what thickness you need. Link to pattern? Andrew
  18. If it were me I would install a sub floor of 2'x2' panels. You can shim and level the subfloor and your vinyl flooring will go in fine. The ines with the rigid foam on the back may have enoughgive to level the floorby themselves. Lowe's happens to have the inzulated ones on buy 1 get 1 free this weekend. The extra insulation on the floor will be nice on the feet as well. Andrew
  19. Oops, I got confused with the screening that was a couple of weeks ago at the Cardel Theatre. Andrew
  20. It should be different films as they are put on by different companies. One is IF4 and the other is FT3. Andrew
  21. I don't know the output. Frankly I'm not worried about it either. I'm not playing CSI with it. I can tell you that it dries the Loon UV Glue in 2-3 seconds, which is fast enough for me. I usually cover the fly in the glue and rotate it slowly in my vice a couple of times. A
