  1. Well it's gotta be a bit on the "believe it or not" side, but the Flames are still in the hunt for a playoff spot. With out Iggy too. Backlund, Giordano, Dawes, Bourque et al seem to be carrying the load.
  2. Congratulations James, if you want some advice about how to get your girl fishing try Bobloblaw. Seems like he gets his daughter out on the water. I think there's a couple of other guys here who also in the same situation, maybe they can give you some pointers. PS I have a son and he has come fishing with me all of two or three times and he's 19 now.
  3. I actually had that happen to me on the Bow last summer. I got out pretty early one morning and and caught two or three fish on a size 8 stimulator, with a prince dropper. Had a few on too that got off, most of the fish were after the dry, but then I watched the dry go down and fish on. It took line ripped out into the middle of the river and all I could do was hold on. I managed to get some line back and then the fish came back toward the shore downstream from me so I was reeling in more line and walking downstream, I caught a glimpse of a huge tail, brown trout, and off into the middle of river again. I usually horse them in pretty hard but this fish was really strong and he got into my backing. I fought him a bit longer and then my rod just straightened out suddenly, and I thought that it broke off. But as I reeled in my backing there was no flyline on it. I was going to replace it at the end of the summer, and it broke off with just a 16th of an inch of the flyline still attached. The knot didn't break, the flyline did. All I can think is that the backing must have cut into the line and weakened it enough so it broke under the strain. Oh well that's fishing.
  4. Someone told me on the busier rivers in the US considerate anglers put a note in their windsheild that simply says "Gone upstream" or "Gone downstream" I tried that once on the Crow and I guess nobody looked at my truck and read the note because three groups of fishermen walked past where we were fishing. Though we continued up and didn't run into anyone.
  5. My problem with Ann Coulter is she says she's all about free speech , freedom of the press and freedom of religion. Yet her main objective is to silence and restrict Muslims. A bit hypocritical in my eyes. Your free as long as you're not a Muslim. Anyone know if she's aligned with the JDL?
  6. They are moving into the faster water, if you have a thermometer take a measurement and if it is only a little above the freezing mark they will be in the slower water, but last weekend I was fishing in water that was 44 F and the fish were in seams beside some deep chop. Much faster water than I expected, the only reason I even tried was another angler was in the spot I was hoping to hit, and I ended up in a happy second best.
  7. I was down in Arizona during a anti-Medicare rally and there were people waving guns in the air because of the proposed legislation. Now I have heard that there are going to be numerous lawsuits launched against it, and that when the Republicans get back in power they will try to quash it. I don't know if anyone here watches the TV show "Breaking Bad". But there is a direct link between insurance debt and crime.
  8. Here's if not the first, one of the first browns of 2010.
  9. Yeah there was one of those on Tuesday, glad it wasn't anywhere near where I was fishing.
  10. And the royalty rate in 1970 was 12.5% Which is about half of todays rate. Maybe that's where the extra $91000 in wages has gone. It's Alberta's "fair share"
  11. Here are some numbers of the old royalty rates: Alberta 35% Sask 29% B.C. 25% U.S. 24% For gas at $6/Mcf Alberta 37% U.S. 22% B.C. 18% Sask 18% For oil at $65/bbl Small wonder that Saskatchewan has the most bouyant economy in Canada. I know the government there was very happy with the royalty review that was put into effect Jan 2009, and the BC people were okay with it too.
  12. The books by Paul Quarrington are similiar to McGuane in that fly fishing is only part of the story. In one of his books he writes about fly fishing on the Bow the day that 9-11 happened, kind of eerie.
  13. Yes here in Calgary there are still people with more money than they know what to do with.
  14. Couldn't make it to claim my prize. So who did win?
  15. I have to add that I have taken fish on the nymph of these, but try as I might I have never caught anything on the adult. Mind you I have ony tried on the Bow and Crow, rumour has it that on the Red Deer and Stauffer the fish will take the adults.
  16. I sure hope this post ends soon Trying to deliberate with Mr PGK (aka I know everything and you're all morons) is like wrestling with a pig, everyone gets covered in sh*t, no one wins, and only the pig ends up getting what it wants.
  17. You are right that the money is already there, but the money that comes in from licenses goes into general revenue. It is not specifically designated towards F&W, so a surcharge that would be directed that way is a great idea. However in the e-mails I have exchanged with various government departments and individuals it is clear that they feel a surcharge would potentially damage the tourist fishery. Also they did not want to dedicate the funds from this to F&W as it would be a loss of control, this tends to be counter intuitive to what politicos are all about. So we are basically undervaluing our fishery, understaffing it, underfunding it and overutilizing it, which ultimately will result in some type of disaster. The problem is the elected officials don't want to hear what we are saying. But then, we the folks on this board are a minority within the population of this province, unfotunately for most people this just isn't that important of an issue and the government looks upon us as a vocal, radical group with no teeth.
  18. YEAH GO CANADA! though I must admit that this is the only time I ever watch speed skating, short or long track, or even figure skating. But the girls costumes do impress me.
  19. I know there are flaws in the US Justice system, but at least if you do something in the US, you are going to do some serious time..... they don't screw around. Adams This is a compelling argument that always comes up, but I don't think the US system is any better than ours. There is a case that is just now coming into the Canadian court system where a fellow was murdered in 1992. The reason, he also murdered someone in N Dakota, where he got 20 years and and now was basically eligible for parole, but instead he's facing our justice now. It will be interesting to see his sentence, for a good comparison of the two courts.
  20. Yes there are various types, biggest difference is the length of the hook shank, for stimulators you want a longer shank 2 XL 94831. The hook size refers to the size of the gap, the space between the shank and the point of the hook.
  21. Well I sure hope that the police can do something with the pix that Jay got, another good use for the old can of bear spray.
  22. That is very nice.
  23. Have you tried to whipfinish with your fingers, always works for me on larger flies.
  24. I agree that the Saints wanted it more, I think that the onside kick really shook up Indy though. Usually the Super Bowl features very conservative play, and that was more of what you see in the CFL. It seemed from then on that the Saints got really pumped and took over the game. Plus the interception that Manning threw was the icing on the cake.
