  1. Another great looking fly Gary. I always enjoy your pictures and look forward to the next one. Murray
  2. Try Auto Marine, talk to Brian. They are one block east of Mcleod Trail, close to 50 ave. They deal in Yamaha motorsm. Murray
  3. With the very small, breast feathers, simply tie in by the tip and wrap a nice soft hackle at the head of the fly. I use a 16 or 14 hook and an olive body, it makes a credible caddis. For the bigger feathers do the same on a streamer hook. Look up a Carey Special. Honestly there are lots of uses. Murray
  4. I have to second the Helios 4 wt with a Lamson Lightspeed. I use a Helios 6 wt. the Lamson Lightspeed matches up with the rod perfectly. I seldom fish the smaller streams but I think a 4 wt. is just the ticket. You would be more than welcome to take my six weight out for the day.
  5. Whoa, that is a brute!
  6. You make some good points Dave, particularly in regards to the increasing frequency of major flooding events. Murray
  7. I came across this article that talks about trout survival and health after a flood event. It specifically deals with flooding in the East but I think the same thing applies here. If nothing else, it's an interesting read. http://www.orvis.com/news/fly-fishing/Survival-After-the-Floods/ Murray
  8. Don, thanks for posting. Very good info. Murray
  9. I was curious about the state of Policeman's Flats yesterday so I took a drive. In my humble opinion, the boat launch and parking lot are out of the mix for the foreseeable future. The entrance road to the launch area and the parking area is simply gone. It will take some extensive work this summer to make it useable this summer. My guess is that once the road is rebuilt the drift boats can start floating again. For now I think any floating will have to be done with a pontoon, inflate ale or canoe, something that can be carried overland. On a side note, there were four drunken BOZOS, setting out for a float down river in a canoe. I tried to talk them out of it but the booze made the decision for them. I hope they didn't hit any sweepers. By the way, for those that have not seen the river post flood, it is still high but normally would be fish able except for the visibility. The banks also looked very unstable with several areas undercut so much that they will be collapsing in to the river. If you decide to check it out, be very very carefull. Murray
  10. Way to go Patagonia. Great support from the fly fishing community. Coutry Pleasures, good on you for all you do. I urge any and all FF people, guys and gals to get over there and buy the whole darn works. Mike tells me all of the proceeds go to the flood recovery at High River.
  11. Like DRock says, fishing is going to be tough for the next while. Flowing water in the south part of the province will be next to impossible to fish in my opinion. if you choose some of the lakes you'll do better with some kind of a boat. A pontoon boat would work well. most of the lakes I fish, I use a floating line and wooly buggers under an indicator or weighted wooly buggers with no indicator. You could try a second fly about 24 inches back tied to the hook bend of the first fly. My choice for the second fly would include backswimmers, prince nymphs, caddis pupae, smaller leach type of flies. If chironomid fishing appeals to you it can be very productive at times. try hanging a anti-static bag chironomid about 12 inches from the bottom. I spent the day working in the Caroline, Rocky Mtn. House areas and most of the streams are the colour of chocolate milk and higher than normal but certainly fishable. I would bring big rubber boots. Murray
  12. Like the title says, I know we have some members that have been flooded out. Is there any way I can help? Murray
  13. I have been using one for about 3 years now. I bought one for my son as he does a lot of back country camping by himself. The thought was that it would give both my wife and I some peace of mind in the event he ever needed to be rescued from a remote area. My wife thought it was a good idea so she picked one up for me. I now use it when I go fishing or camping by myself. If I remember correctly, the monitoring costs are around $100.00 per year. I've gotta say, it does give my wife peace of mind. Another thing I use it for is when I'm floating the Bow, if I'm running a little bit late due to excellent fishing, I'll just send her a message with a google maps link to show her where I am and she can adjust her arrival time to pick me up. Like all satellite dependant units, it does require a clear view of the sky. But it will work in places where your cell phone doesn't, even out on the Ocean. There are pros and cons but in my opinion, if you can stomach the $100.00/year fee, they are worth it. Murray
  14. Mike, although it doesn't meet all of your criteria( swivel seats) Zodiac does make a model of boat with a high pressure inflatable floor. It does not require assembly as you simply inflate it with the same pump you use for the boat. I have sat in one and it is dead simple to inflate and use. Another plus is that it is lighter than the same size boat with floor boards. As far as seating goes, there are several options. You can glue darn near any seat bracket and put bench style seats across. I would imagine a swivel seat could be attached to that. There are several options for such things as rod holders and fish finders etc. I have seen a few zodiacs on KIJIJI lately The down side is going to be cost. Zodiacs don't come cheap but the quality is there. In my opinion, they are worth it. Send me a PM if your interested in how much mine cost. Murray
  15. Happy Birthday Max. It's a great day, I hope you enjoyed yours. Murray
  16. Taco, it took me a while to stop laughing at that one. I too would wonder where the heck my phone was. Murray
  17. Hey Peter, where did you get the rod holder from? I would like to add one to my pontoon. Murray
  18. South West, Canyon Meadows, I can and have walked to FishTales. Looks like a couple of FFC members live close to me as we'll. Murray
  19. Now, how could anyone turn down an opportunity for a chance at a free Helios 2 rod? I think I will show up. Murray

    Pike

Welcome to the Forum, pike are a lot of fun on a fly rod. There are several places close to Calgary you can go. Think any of the irrigation system. If there is a body of water connected to the irrigation system it probably has Pike in it. The closest water I can think of is the Glenmore Resevoir. I'm not sure of the regulations as far as open or closed season so check that before you go but you should be able to pick up a few. Chestermere or Eagle lake come to mind as well as Twin Valley Dam south of Nanton are good choices. Have fun, let us know how you make out. Murray
  21. Lornce, I really like those Humpy's, maybe you can give me a lesson some day. Murray
  22. Try the University of Calgary outdoor store. In years past, I have rented from them. Murray
  23. I know there is a group of women cancer survivors but for the life of me, I can't remember details. Maybe someone on the board can remember how to contact them. Murray
  24. Count me in for May 12th also. It seems to me everyone on this board uses the river to some degree. Most would be willing to pitch in I think. I like Policeman's Flats for the BBQ idea. I can provide a BBQ and a few hot dogs and such. Got a motor home with fridge we could set up in the parking lot. Murray
