Fly Fishing Film Ticket Giveaway
lethfisher replied to Flytyer's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
I'll throw my name in the hat -
I took my sister out fly fishing for the first time a few weeks ago after doing some casting practice on the lawn. We went to a spot with lots of small trout as I didn't want to discourage her on the Bow lol Anyways after an hour or so of casting to rising trout she finally hooked into one and seeing the excitement on her face was great! Couldn't turn that smile off if she tried! She kept saying how awesome it was and how much fun it was to hook into a trout. Made my day for sure!! Always fun watching others catch fish

Was really jealous as I had only brought my single hander!! Was it anyone on the forum here? If so what was the setup? Looked almost long belly but maybe scandi??

Where Have All The Speycasters Gone
lethfisher replied to speyghillie's topic in Spey Casters Lounge
I feel bad, I bought a license yesterday and haven't tossed a line in awhile. On the plus side, was in San Fran last weekend and went to the casting pools there, definitely go check it out if you go there!!! Here is a pic of some single hand spey casting!! -
Just watering the lawn with it

Trying to be eco-friendly and save some money on water bills by making a rain barrel this year. Anyone know places to get a barrel for cheap or even free? There are a bunch on kijiji for $20 but I thought I could get it for cheaper maybe!!!! Thanks!!!

Time To Protect Our Mountain Streams
lethfisher replied to mtbkr's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
I totally support full C&R in the mountains, I practice it now when I fish the streams anyways. I think it may be an easy concept to understand for some people but I know other people also will look at it along the lines of "I'm paying $28 a year for a fishing license I should be able to take however many fish I want, do you see how expensive it is in the grocery store, etc etc" So I think it will be a tough argument for some but definitely worth it in the end. If they have to shut down the streams for a season then so be it, if it can help the fish population for current and future generations. I really hope they get some more regulations in though, we need an premiere that is a fly fisherman haha then more would get done about it for sure!! Anyways good work Mat and keep it up!! -
My goal for the summer is to catch a walleye on the fly!! Plus get lots of Pike while hunting for the walleye Getting ready with some perchy clousers and bunny bugs

Customer Service Out The Window?

Not a big fan of Bass Pro, more because it's not a local shop. I shop a lot Troutfitters, they are pretty cool there. MEC is sweet and same with Campers Village. That link didn't work that Botangles posted here is what I think he was trying to post. -
Awesome Pics!! That pic of the brookie, is that your leech fly in its mouth and another leech? Whats going on there lol

If you are going to build one you can buy the whole kit on eBay for about $170, that is a 7wt but I have seen 6wts. FishTales also carries that blank and all the bits you need to buy it. The blank is around $110 from FishTales. If you are going to build it yourself then I would recommend getting all your stuff from FishTales because you are going to have lots of questions and they will have lots of answers!! It really isn't that difficult to build them, plus at the end of it you get a custom rod that you can write your name on! PS. i'm not affiliated at all with fishtales lol I've built a rod before and they helped me a lot during the process.

I have a switch rod and found that it really wasn't that great for single handing and ended up doing spey casts with it whenever I took it out. Now it's in the trading post and I have a spey rod lol The extra length makes it difficult to cast with one hand all day. You might want to look into a shooting head system like a 40+ line as it will help turn over the bigger stuff with your current 6wt. Just an idea though...

Check out this link when you actually get around to building the boat. There is lots of helpful information on the building processes, techniques, materials, etc http://bateau2.com/howto-index.php#methods

Anyone Here Play Guitar?
lethfisher replied to birchy's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I will give another vote for Garageband on the Mac. Really good lessons and it gives a diagram of where to put your fingers as you play along. I don't play guitar but showed this to someone who does and they really liked it. -

Backup Steelhead Rod
lethfisher replied to troutstalker's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
The Redington CPX switch is around that same price point as well at $349 on their website. I think that extra length with an 8wt switch would just make you want to double hand it all day. I have a 7wt switch and it is do-able with one hand for awhile, but all day? Not so much. I think most people end up using their switches with 2 hands anyways but it's all personal preference I suppose. -
nope never even cast it. The 1134 trout spey doesn't seem to bad and has gained quite the following though so I am assuming the 1268 is awesome as well. Those line rec's are from speypages lol

Here are some line recommendations from someone else with the rod. Get a large arbor reel as you'll be carrying a lot of line and you need to balance out the rod. You could always email Amundson directly and ask them for info on the rod and recommended reel/line weights (info@amundson.ca). Airflo compact Skagit 530 grains Rio Skagit Flight 525 grains RIO AFS 7/8 with spey polyleader Airflo delta 7/8 If you get a skagit line you'll need a tip as well, go ask the FishTales guys about them! They explained it to me for like 20min one day haha Good Luck and welcome to the new addiction!

holy crap you guys all tie in mass quantities!! Must donate lots to the trees then eh? I think I am a slow tier as that many stonefly nymphs would be maybe 5 hours!!

Sweet wired stones! I've been doing some rubber legged copper johns and tried out the gartside leech.

New Driveway Cracking
lethfisher replied to ÜberFly's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
This might be of some help, I just finished a materials course at the university that talked a lot about concrete and we covered some durability issues. This is right from our lecture slides. Early Stage Cracking A, B, C —due to differential settlement of plastic concrete. Form before initial set (10 min. to 3 hours) D, E, F —plastic shrinkage cracks. Form due to excessive evaporation (30 min. to 6 hours) G, H —thermal contraction cracks. Cooling after excessive heat generation or high thermal gradients. Form after 1 day to 2 to 3 weeks J, K —Crazing cracks. Inadequate curing and finishing combined with a surface rich in paste Later Age Cracks I —due to long term drying shrinkage. Form several several weeks or months after casting L —due to corrosion of reinforcement. Accompanied by brownish extrusions (rust) from cracks. Form two years or more after casting M, N —due to alkali-aggregate reaction. Form 5 or more years after casting, often accompanied by white silica-gel extrusion I am guessing 'I' maybe? It is really dry in Calgary (especially in the winter) and can effect fresh concrete a lot if proper curing regiments aren't followed. Ideally the concrete should be kept moist while curing to keep from this type of thing from happening. If the concrete dries out while curing it can shrink, which causes these types of cracks. You can get different types of cement for different situations that can help combat different weather situations during curing, but that comes a higher cost. As for freeze thaw, it is possible to entrain tiny air pockets into the concrete to allow water to expand and contract in the concrete throughout the winter cycles preventing some cracking. Coming back to a common theme of this type of cement requires more money! It can happen that because of these extra costs, driveways and basic house foundations kind of get the 'bottom of the barrel' cement mixes which could lead to problems. Not always but it is possible! Hope that helps... PS There is no such thing as a cement truck, it's a concrete truck
