  1. Of course the fish and scenery were amazing, but I really loved that waterfall shot, especially since it's gonna be in the 90's today.
  2. So, did anyone try this fly?
  3. I admit. I've been holding out on you. This one is from last summer. Mediocre photo of a decent fish. http://tinypic.com/25f278j.jpg
  4. Here's another question: if you wear bootfoot waders wouldn't it be faster or easier to just take them off before you try to stand up?
  5. I've got a collapsible one, Lynn. Most of the time, it lives in it's pouch on my belt. It's very fast to deploy on short notice. One irritation I have with mine is that the sections stick together from time to time, especially if I've leaned on it a lot. I try to remember to wax the joints to prevent this. Mine is a folstaff brand.
  6. Love that Ice Dub. Before tying down the foam, I brush a layer of a super glue type of stuff over the thread base. Also, while tying the foam down, I pinch it a bit to cinch it down tight. Using a thread called "Big Fly" prevented me from cutting into the foam when pulling it tight.
  7. Toolman- a PM to answer your question. Most places, the browns do not get Alberta "Big". SJW- yes, Cleveland Browns are bigger and less pretty. wongrs- I've only tried it on hooks. That works for me. I do have some acupuncture tubes but haven't quite put the motivation together with the hook rigging to give tube flies a try.
  8. Yes, but it takes only one piece of foam, it gurgles invitingly when you pull fast and the legs swim in a much cooler way. I think the cutties will love it.
  9. http://globalflyfisher.com/patterns/burning-man/ I tied two of these on hooks instead of tubes and used the excellent coral snake rubber legs I got from Pacres. One is orange and the other is red. They both caught big brown trout in Minnesota last Friday. I was using them primarily as strike indicators with a heavy nymph tied to the bend of the hook. Once the fish, which had not previously been rising, jumped out of the water and landed on the Burning Man, I ditched the nymph and pitched the fly by itself the rest of the day.
  10. I empathize Lynn. Doc broke my teeth into pieces so he could unwrap each root individually. I felt like he was standing on my jaw. The sound and the pressure were nauseating. TG for laughing gas. This was all VERY funny to me. Every time something hurt or frightened me, I just took a big ol' snort. Why I opted to have only two done at a time I'll never know. Oh wait! I do know. If they wanted to take all four they'd have to put me under. And they couldn't put me under because it was such a small town that they'd have to rent the hospital emergency room for the work. Birchy- slap a bag of frozen peas on your mug and any pain, bruising or swelling will go away faster. Ice works too, of course, but doesn't conform to a body's contours as well.
  11. I'm always finding dead things, but most often bones. They don't smell so bad. In a post about the litter pick up, I told the story of the fellow who won the "weirdest find" prize for our first year's event. He went to pull a lawn chair out of the middle of the river and found it was stuck in the antlers of a dead deer. Speculation ensued on the timing of the antler adornment- was he so busy jousting with the chair that he didn't see the truck bearing down on him? Was he trying to wash the chair off? Was he already dead when the chair was picked up by a flood and deposited on the rack?
  12. Ooops! Nevermind. I see that one of the photos is of the underside. Not very yellow, is it? I guess I'll have to bank on it floating by so fast that it just looks edible, if not correct!
  13. Toolman, is the underside of the natural nymph more yellow tan, or just as dark as the shellback? It looks like the emerged adults are much more golden.
  14. Now that's a fish! Heart thumping story.
  15. I don't think I'll be wetting the flies quite like ol' Lefty does. Too much road kill in the tying kit.
  16. I like! Also, it's a good example of how to use a whip finisher. Is there a way to cross post or tag things on you tube so that if you google or otherwise search "video of whip finish" this would come up? Countless noobs have asked how to use one and it just defies description until you see it. On second thought you probably shouldn't google "video of whip finish" if you're at work. Nevermind!
  17. What a great photo. Answers the question and more.
  18. Nope, they say that if you live long enough, you will get cancer. But really, for fair skinned, fair haired or light eyed people, wearing sunscreen is not that big a sacrifice by comparison to losing chunks of your skin or your life.
  19. If you fish near me, or have seen the photos, you know that I wear a big hat, long sleeves, sun gloves and sunscreen. Nonetheless, I had a pre-cancerous lesion removed from my face yesterday. The doctor said it was due to damage done a long time ago, probably in my well-spent youth around swimming pools, canoes and horses. Or the bodybuilding phase when a tan was MORE than important. Oy! Anyway, my new friends, plop a hat on the kids, wear sunscreen yourselves and don't razz those who do. Those of us with any combination of light hair, skin or eyes need to be especially vigilant. Supliment your diet with vitamin D to counter the lack of sunlight on your skin, if you have to.
