  1. My 16 yr old is in the process of obtaining his license, so I've been driving a lot with him lately. One of the hardest things for him to get his head around is what is the "point of no return" when approaching a yellow. I think the biggest problem is the goal of the yellow has changed over the years--from as a guide for when to safely stop to a tool telling you when to speed up to beat the red. While teaching Ben, I've been really paying attention to red light behavior, and it is pretty appalling. If the truth be known, I am fully in favor of red light camera's. I don't care if it is a cash grab or not. If it helps change behavior, I am all for it. I remember talking to a cop once about the rules for running a yellow. If you speed up to beat the yellow, it is a ticketable offense, whether you beat the yellow or not. These camera's will catch you if you do it. No problem with me. Hawg, I couldn't agree more on your point that the VAST majority of accidents are due to cars/passenger vehicles, proportionally more than the number of passenger vehicles to big trucks. Problem is that when a accident happens with a big rig, the results can be horrific and therefore get lots of press. This can give truckers in general an undeserved bad name. I really believe most thinking people are a bit immune to media sensationalism. Or at least I hope so
  2. Jared, I gotta give you some books to read brother. Haig-Brown talks about them lots (BC). The River Why referenced above (Oregon, if I remember) also talks about them. Great book by the way. They are so pretty! I'd love to fish for them sometime.
  3. I'm way too cheap for Simms, or Patagonia. I have a Wright and McGill waterproof jacket my wife got me for xmas. I think it is in the $200 range? Love it so far. Lots of big pockets. I fell in the river with it (near the bank, knee deep) and water did not get past the cuffs. http://www.wright-mcgill.com/index.php?fus...tWearBHJacketFe
  4. SA=Southern Alberta. Should have realized you would confuse with South America. Best of luck on the trip! Try not to kill each other.
  5. do they give coupons away in SA as well? I thought it was just Guam!
  6. Saw a pontoon btwn 22X and Policeman's Friday.
  7. I've been fishing streamers a lot more often lately, and have noticed a couple of things: I am getting the vast majority of my fish on the swing, and the ones I don't get on the swing I tend to get as I am starting my lift to cast. I get very, very few while stripping. This makes me think I may be doing something wrong when stripping, and hence missing opportunities to catch more. My general method is cast anywhere from 45 to 90 degrees, mend upstream, let it swing out, then strip back. Often, I'll strip while it is swinging, but I don't find that effective at all. I've tried different speeds, pauses, twitches, whatever. I've also noticed that most of the strikes have not been the violent attack type strikes. More like the streamer just stops, or feels like a hang. Fun when the "hang" starts to head shake though! So is it normal for most to hit on the swing? Is it a winter thing, ie, fish are less active and less willing to chase? If so, then why are they hitting on the lift? I would think that the hit on the lift is a reaction strike to the bait "getting away". So that to me would mean the fish is following, yes? Anyway, any help would be appreciated.
  8. Gord's method works great, but pay attention to your hands with respect to your guides. Last time I unstuck 2 sectioins using this method I also broke a guide.
  9. Pulling the kids out of school on Thursday and heading up to Panorama. I sure hope the weatherman gets it right, cuz if so, it will be epic! http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Panorama/6day/top
  10. BBT, My wife reads this forum from time to time. Don't know that I ever had a McDLT.
  11. I was in Guam in 1985 or so, when I was stationed on a sub. Not many girls on Guam. Lots of men though. Young men. They have these, umm, houses where some men go to part with some of their hard earned money. Apparently the competition was pretty stiff (pun intended) between two of the houses. One of the houses started offering a coupon for a McDLT (hot side hot!) with each, ummm, purchase. Better than a cigarette I guess. By the way, 100% true story.
  12. McGriddle's, or whatever they are called. Take a perfectly good Sausage and Egg McMuffin, put some kind of fat pancake thing on top injected with syrup, and call it breakfast. Nastiest thing ever. Anywhere.

    Pretty brown brad!
  14. I say this with all due repect in a non-argumentative tone. My hometown, situated on a estuary bay system, is basically one big oil refinery. We supply a big chunk of the gasoline and other petro-chem products to North America. We've done our part, it is way past time for other areas of the continent to do their share. Last time I checked, BC people drive cars and the province benefits from gas drilling in NE BC. You will undoubtedly drive your cars in the future with fuel refined from the tar sands. You can't claim immunity from any of the potential hazards associated with these activities. With all due repect, your coast is no more special than anyone elses. For those who disagree, and I'm sure many will, try to be civil in your discussion.

    Goodbye

All the best to you and you're family. I can say from experience that the memories do not fade.
  16. I have the offshore version.
  17. This should be the most awesomest thing ever! Everybody go, and please, stay all day. Doing what I can to help you advertise Dave!!
  18. Sorta reminds me of the drama when a couple of guys were about to throw down over whether fishing in -35 was a reality or not. Wait a minute.......
  19. Brett's article is great. Got sent to me today by the way as something I should read.....
  20. No, I meant all the infighting. Locked threads usually didn't end well. I just had an image of a newby reading any of the fish handling threads and watching us yell at each other. "Welcome to the site! How do you like us so far?" Kind of like an intro to spey casting being one of the "I don't understand this spey casting thing" threads. Anyway, it was meant to be funny. Didn't work apparently!
  21. I'd ask you to post pictures, but I wouldn't want to get anyone in trouble.......
  22. You going to edit those?? Wouldn't want to scare anyone off!
  23. Happy birthday Lawrence!
  24. Good to read that. I hope it means this Lynx's docility does not mean it is starving and that it survives the winter.
