Global Warming Debate Goes Cold Like The Climate
reevesr1 replied to a topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Sun, if you are going to try to convince people that your theories are correct, might I suggest finding someone a bit more scholarly than a CEO of a Gas Company, particularly one with no advanced degree that I can find? Or maybe a speech at a school a trifle more prestigious than Utah Valley State? But his job and education level aside, maybe someone who would not utter this wonderful paragraph: I found the "retaining wall" line hysterical. Can someone add up the amount of beachfront property for me? What about islands near sea level? Just build a big wall, that'll do it! or this: OK, let me turn to the lessons learned by the Economic Crisis of 2008/2009--Leaving the market to decide things for itself is not always the best path to trod upon. And who decides the reasonable standards? Back in the day, the "reasonable standards" allowed companies to do pretty much whatever they wanted to the environment. My home county has 4 superfund sites as a reminder of those times. Basically land that will never in my lifetime be used for anything. Now, we have standards to stop such behavior, but a little too late. I'm sure that economists back in those day said that if we put "draconian" environmental standards on companies, the economic price would be too high. "Let the market decide" would have been their rallying cry as well. Turns out they (the economists) were wrong. As I've said before, I don't have the slightest idea what the deal is with global warming. Lots of conflicting opinions and I do not have the expertise to make sense of it all. But I AM smart enough not to be dissuaded by a rambling CEO of a Gas company at some second rate university (no offense to any Utah Valley State grad on this site). Note: I just looked up Utah Valley State. No advanced degree programs. Some science, no engineering. They do offer a course in Diesel Mechanics though. -
I've read Blue Ribbon Bow. I actually lent it to a friend (along with Alberta's Trout Highway) and never got them back. I need to call him! I'll get Western Trout Streams soon.

I don't think the Hawks really needed the help. -
Paul, I am not any type of expert on MPA's, but I do know all the fish conservation associations I am aware of (and that's admittedly not that many) were vehemently opposed. MPAs are seen as an attempt to stop fishing completely, not manage it. My info is several years old, and could be dated. This is not catch and release. This is NO fishing whatsoever. And the areas they tend to want to pick? The most fertile ones. Save fishing by stopping it completely. Nice.

Does that mean Bamboo Rods are green? Sorry Don, couldn't resist.

And I'm not arguing that the flames haven't drawn the short end of the stick in this series. I just don't think it has anything to do with the league favoring a US team. Could be that Flames are the perceived aggressor in this series? I don't know, but I can't imagine there is any conspiracy. Edit: Just saw some stats on ESPN: Calgary Penalty Minutes 64 Chicago Penalty Minutes 62 But much of that is the madness at the end of game 3. In the first two games, Calgary had the man advantage 7 times (really 8 because one of those was a double minor) and Chicago had 6 PPs. In the next two games, Calgary had the man advantage 5 times, and Chicago 12 (I did not include any penalties after 19 minutes of game 3) So total series: Calgary 13 man advantages, Chicago 18. But interestingly enough, in all games the team who had the most power play minutes LOST. -

I agree with the penalty kill point, but they are sitting back once they get the lead. I would not call it "relaxing" because I do not think it is on purpose. But their playing style changes once they get the lead and I think they really need to keep up the physical play throughout the game. Easy for me to say, it's not my body that is starting to ache all over from all the hits I'm dishing out. I thought Ollie's penalty was a WTF moment when they showed the replay, as was the trip on Iginla late. But do I think that the ref's have it out for Calgary becasue they are Canadian? No, I don't. If so, where was the call on the hand pass? Bert in the crease on the GW goal? People only remember the bad calls that go against there team. They have selective memory on bad calls for their team. -

Got the lead, sat back, and Kipper hasn't stopped anything. Hope they can get it back together in the third. Edit: 5-4! 6:42 to go! -
If you are doing some sort of tight line nymphing, then fishing by feel or watching the end of your fly line is easier. But if you are dead/drag free drifting, fishing by feel is effectively impossible due to the fact there will certainly be slack. You can still use your fly line, or sometimes even your leader as the "indicator", but you really need to pay attention.and if you are fishing much weight this is even harder. But to your question as to whether you should stick with indicators- I find it overall more effective, but as someone else said, Ive seen people be very effective without them as well. But frankly, the best fishermen I fish with use them much more than they dont.

I've had it with the biased liberal media in my country. Here is a story about Canada and I saw no mention of beer, igloos, dogsleds, moose, or hockey. Unacceptable! http://m.cnn.com/cnn/ne/world/detail/289188

I actually got them yesterday, but didn't open the letter yet. Waiting for the weather to improve.

I use the Medium mostly on The Bow (I have used the tank late in the evening or in really fast water to limit the amount of hangs). On small water/small nymphs I will use the small one, but usually when I would be using the small one I'm using some sort of dry instead.

One of the members of the board, MikeG, sent me several furled leaders for me to try out. I think his theory of asking me to test is: "he may no know what he is doing, but he sure fishes alot." So to help him out with actual knowledge, I gave a few to troutlover to try. I hope he has something intelligent to add. Anyway, here is what I think: I've been using a couple of different nymph leaders, both around 6 ft. One is all mono and one is a braid indicator on top, mono after. Both leaders turn over unbelievably well. The mono sinks pretty fast. I'm thinking of appyling xink to get it to sink even faster, but I don't think that stuff will work on mono? Anyway, I haven't tried the indi part yet because for the most part I've been setting my indi pretty shallow, like 3-5 feet and since I have 3 ft of tippet tied to the bottom of the leader, that means an indi on the leader itself. I'll try the indi hopefully next week. Crow would be nice. One of the other benefits, apart from the wicked turnover, is that the braided leader does not seem to have any memory for the thingamabobber, at least after a couple of hours. Seems like they would last for quite a long time (like as long or longer than my fly line?). Also, I used the all mono at Bullshead in heavy wind with very few, if any, tangles from the wind. Same thing on the Bow. I can hardly think of any tangles (other than some catches on the indi). I also have a short streamer leader, which is pink (mike claims that fish can't see it. I think he's laughing at me.) Again, casts and turns over great. Can't say much of anything else as I've been struggling with streamers lately. The only issue I have had is torque. But a quick stretch of the leader and all is good again. I also have a couple of thread 8 or 9 ft leaders for dry fly fishing. I just put some waterproofing on them tonite. Can't wait to try them out. So far, I really like these leaders. And Mike seems to like making them, so win-win for me!! Mike-I do want to tell you how much I appreciate you making these. They are fun to fish with.

Ok, that's just bragging. Did I sound jealous there? I wonder if it's because I'm not a member yet. Congrats! -
Tough question. After catching several of either species, I always want to catch the other just for the diversity. But if you told me I could only catch one? Give me a big rainbow when they are at their peak. I remember a 22" during runoff last year that hit my backing in like 5 seconds. Like hooking onto a rocketship. They are just a riot to catch.

This is a quote from Kenny Perry, several days after he lost the Masters: "I hadn't been playing like that all week. I was playing conservative aggressive, if there is such a word. And I was playing great golf. Then all of a sudden, when I knew I had to make two pars, I got defensive. All of a sudden, I tried to hang on. That's the worst thing you can do in golf. When you start to hang on, bad things happen in golf." When you start to hang on, bad things happen in hockey too. I was at the game last night. At no point did it look to me like the Flames were trying to hang on. They played "conservative aggressive" the entire game (or maybe just aggressive aggressive), and were never really challenged in the 3rd. Everyone is praising Kipper, and he did save their asses in the 1st. But I thought the Flames did a great job of keeping the shots to the outside and giving Kipper a view of everything in the 2nd and 3rd. Drew is right, that's how you beat the Blackhawks. -

One thing I find interesting is when hockey is discussed, very rarely do people talk about matchups. I don't know why that is. In basketball, and even football from time to time, how one team matches up with the other is dissected. In hockey, not so much. So I will try: Chicago is a TERRIBLE matchup for the Flames, particularly when they are missing a key defenceman. They have no answer for the speed/skill of Chicago's young guns. Their only hope in my limited view of the game is to try to maintain their physical play throughout the game. It has put them in the lead in both games, and in both games when their physical play stopped, the 'hawks came back. I don't think it is an effort thing at all. As anyone who has played any sport can tell you-if you have a sizable lead at any point in a game or a late lead, it is hard not to mentally change focus. You don't do it on purpose, it just happens. Calgary has to fight the temptation to ever sit back against this team. If they don't take the action to Chicago, they have no hope. (and they may not have much even then) -
Forestry trunk road is gravel, except paved through K-Country. All of the Bow access points south of the city are gravel, I think. I think the back country map books tells you which are paved and which are not?

Not a bad place to leave it as that's where I bought it in the first place. I think it was originally designed to place in deer. And I do fish at the confluence from time to time and from what I understand, that's the same as fishing at an aquarium! Nice video as always Mr. Jones. -

You should have thought about the t-shirt Taco. It was probably on sale.

My first trip on The Bow was with Dee. I had never even touched a fly rod before that day. Caught a fish on my second cast with a streamer. I called it a "suicide fish." Dee is just fantastic. I ended up catching like 5 or 6 doing hopper/dropper (though I didn't know a hopper from a dropper then) that day which I though was awesome considering my casting skills were ummmm, limited. I ldr'd a bunch more. That day totally hooked my on fly fishing. Listen and you will certainly learn.
