  1. Pseudo, First off, let me add my appreciation for your screen name. I love it! I realize that in playing devil's advocate you are not necessarily espousing your beliefs, but just putting out opinions to spark thought. I can appreciate that. That said, I've fished a lot of places and I know of no where that the boat has "right of way" over a wader. Many say this is because of mobility. I disagree. I think it is because, as someone said above, the wader was there first. I fish a lot of places that boats can anchor and fish the same water worked by waders. If the boat is in a spot first, the waders (or at least the courteous ones, there are jerk waders around too!) give the boat room. He was there first. In the absence of any clear rules, one would hope common courtesy would suffice. I also would not expect a drift boat to pull in lines as they passed me. But I would not expect them to drift the exact same water I am fishing either. Don't get within a couple of casts. My bet is that your expectations would be similar.
  2. How the hell did I get dragged into this?? Monger, if I had known you were so damn good, I would have followed you around a bit more. Actually, Troutlover and I came up on Monger a couple of weeks ago. As soon as I saw him, I told Troutlover "we might as well go somewhere else. There's nothing left to catch here." While I would love to stand there and watch him catch fish, I'm the type that gets frustrated when someone else is catching and I am not. So I left. And the other reason, to get this slightly back on topic, is he laughs at me when I chase fish downstream, screaming, "side pressure you weenie!" OK, I made that part up. But if he ever saw me chase a fish, he would say something like that.
  3. I was really feeling my age this morning after 2.5 days of hard skiing. Still managed to hit the lift at just after 9, with maybe 1 cm of new snow. Yawn. As we went up, so did the snow accumulation. By the time we hit the top, there was 10-15 cm of new snow, and I had lost 20 yrs. Amazing what fresh powder will do. Fresh tracks on the first 3 runs!! Yippeeeee!!!
  4. Must not comment... Must put down the crackberry and slowly walk away....
  5. Hah, gulls are easy. Flew many in my day. Wait until you foul hook a pelican. Now that's a fight! Nice job on the marlin cap'n.
  6. Dave, Even with the bumps and bruises and old man bitching, I still get on one of the first chairs in the mornings and on one of the last in the afternoons. No breaks except for lunch. My in laws think I'm crazy because I never stop. They're about 5 years younger than me. That's how Texans do it. What this texan needs to do is get down south to fish with a couple of other grumpy older gentlemen. We can complain about all the things that hurt while we excercise those crowsnest rainbows.
  7. I've spent quite a bit of time skiing with my son this weekend, and I have the bruises to prove it. My shoulder hurts, my hip really hurt, and my elbow hurts. I have also op tested my helmet twice. It seems to work, but if you guys notice me loosing my memory, let me know. Here is what I learned: I am 48, he is 15. I know my limits, he doesn't know there should be limits He is fearless, I am not. He is athletic, I have vague memories of athleticism. When he says: Dad, I just skied Taynton bowl and found fresh powder. It was epic. You have to come. "Ben, are there a lot of trees?" "Yeah, but they're not that big and not really close together. You can ski it!" A short aside: taynton bowl is all double black and you have to hike in. Also, it hasn't snowed here in three days. "Fresh powder" should have sent alarm bells ringing. How tough is the run that stilll has fresh powder? Now I've only been back on skiis for a couple of years. I can ski some double blacks, but some are over my head. This run that you have to hike into is in the over my head category. Steep, chopped powder, and lots of trees. After my second fall, Ben started to sense my apprehension. Maybe it was when I said "what possibly led you to believe I could ski this?" That and the swearing. Unfortunately for me, even if I could have skied it, after I fell a couple of times I lost my nerve and was doomed. Ben suggested that we work to the right. I asked him to stop talking to me (ok it was immature but he was making it look so easy it was pissing me off!). Anyway, I made it down, and was exhausted. I would say I had 4 or 5 turns that were fun everything else was survival. After a long cat track, we found some nice looking powder toward the bottom of the hill. Unfortunately it was covering ice. Even more unfortunately, we ended up a little out of bounds and had to hike back. I'm now even more tired. We finally come out into the middle of the silver platter run. Ben says sarcastically "race ya". We "race"to the bottom and as I am making my turn to stop, my right ski hooks an edge and I explode all over the snow. And hurt my hip, shoulder, and elbow. All kidding aside, it hurt (especially my pride) and scared my son a bit. As I am lying on the snow quietly moaning, I hear the lifty say "you need to hurry up, this lift is closed but I can hold it for a minute of so." So I put my gear back on and sheepishly ski over to the platter tow. It was not lost on me that I had just skied one of the toughest runs on the hill, followed my son out of bounds, only to yard sale on the bunny hill. I hate getting old.
  8. I like hockey. Learned to watch it in Edmonton in the late 80s and really fell in love with the speed. Been warching the Flames since I moved here and like them for their grit, cuz gritty is when they are at their best. I HATE!!!! the premeditated fighting. I've heard all the arguments and think they are all utterly bs. Do other sports have fights? Of course. But no other sport employs people who are only on the roster to fight or intimidate. Whether you believe me or not, it lessens your sport which is a shame as it is a wonderful game. MV mentioned WWE. When I was a kid, NBC had the NHL on on Saturday afternoon. We all thought it was fake, like wrestling. And before you say I was just a kid, I sure didn't think the NFL or MLB were fake. If the NHL had looked more real, I would have looked at it as a sport, not as a cheap circus. And I promise that it is looking more circus like all the time. And I gotta say that now that I know it is real, it makes it even more sad to me. I know I never played and lots of people will think or say I don't understand, but to them I say "its probably you who don't understand." To get back on topic, bye bye Oilers! Nice run!
  9. Hey Rev, Oops! Yours is one of my faves! Urban fishing at it's finest. But that's not the secret spot you and I need to visit this summer.
  10. Thanks Ryan. Anyone who can reference "The Princess Bride" in a fishing post is ok in my books. I love that movie! Andre the Giant. Classic. He's got big hands too!!
  11. I went there with MTB last year. Full contact fishing! MTB and his cousin graded the run by how difficult it was to get to and fish and then land fish once you hooked them. From green (we didn't fish any of those) to double black diamonds (we did fish a couple of those). I agree with Bloom, go with someone who's been there before!
  12. Hey LS, nice to see you back! A house with no computer? Who's house were you sitting? Fred Flinstone's? So back to spots, sorry to keep this going, but I have to say something (and LS, this is not in response to your post above!) I'm taking a bit of ribbing, most of it I hope good naturedly, about showing people other peoples spot. So I thought I would list all the people who have showed me spots: Maxwell-every run in Fish Creek, Policeman's, and points south Toolman- some sweet runs way out of town and a couple of very nice runs in the city Troutlover-runs all over the city, mostly south of fish creek and south of town MTB-Below fish creek, some stuff around Caresland Rocknbugs-another nice run in the city BBB-some overlooked water in the city Monger-directed me to some nice water south of town Osprey-directed me to an overlooked run close to my house I'm sure I'm missing some others. I apologize. So I don't know what is left for me to fish that isn't someone's spot. Maybe some of the diversionary canals? I'm actually starting to search out my own water, but as soon as I find someplace new, I discover it is someone elses. My point is, every spot is someone's spot. They are all good. Why stress it? Don't take pictures that show obvious landmarks. And while some people will recognize the background in any picture, that only means that they know all the spots already. What's the big freakin' deal?
  13. All except mine that is!
  14. Rob, No need, it is an inherent skill.
  15. My firm belief is that Handyness and Fishing do not mix. My wife is absolutely convince I am the least handy man on the planet. Not even close to true, but it is in my best interest for her to believe so. Less time fixing=more time fishing. I just internally consider the cost of the people I have to hire to be a fishing expense (or golf expens, or whatever my all encompassing hobby is at the time)
  16. fisher26, I'll have 'em all here before too long! Onthefly7, Grew up in Texas City, fishing saltwater my whole life. You are in for a treat. PM sent. Welcome!
  17. Weedy, where do you find those backwards swimming torpedo fish?? Looks like you remember your trig!! sine(theta)=Opposite/hypotenuese
  18. My kinda training course! Now if you can only get your company to pay for the guide, that would really be a neat trick!! Thanks for the post Lundvike. Sounds like a fabulous day on a gorgeous little creek.
  19. Wait until you need me to net your next big fish. I think you may be disappointed in the results.
  20. When I lived in Houston, Bass Pro was 60 miles or so from my house. Found an excuse to go at least a couple of times per year. If they build it,people will come! BBB, Ever fished with me? I loose things from time to time.
  21. Exactly. I have a couple of shops I give most of my business to and that won't change. But for staples (leader, tippet, hemo's, etc.) Bass Pro, Cabelas, Wholesale, etc. will certainly draw me in from time to time.
  22. I am a man of many hidden talents. Unfortunately, none of them make me any money and most make me slightly annoying!
  23. Hey guys, If anyone buys from them, don't forget we get a discount. I did, but it was still a great deal!
