U Unfortunately didn't make it over. Had to go to my daughters school to help her with picking out courses for next year. I'm hoping Sunday or Monday to get out and try my luck. If you made it out how did it go?

This sounds interesting, I have heard that at Bonavista only resident cardholders are allowed to fish. This came from a fellow I work with that is a resident. He said one card, one fishing rod in the gate. Not sure about other community lakes, but I wouldn't mind trading some days with others looking to try out a different community lake. By the way the boats go in the water tomorrow (April 1) at Mckenzie. I may have to go and warm up the casting arm tomorrow.

Years ago I purchased a replacement felt kit at Wholesale Sports in Calgary. I am not sure if they still carry them but you could give them a call.

Just received a new kayak for Christmas and was thinking of installing outriggers for stability. I have found a couple of different outriggers on-line, one set from Scotty that are inflatable. The other ones are made of foam and use the Scotty bases. My question is has anyone used either type or have any recommendations. Thank you in advance Russ C.

I agree with you belly boats are not a good idea on a river like the Bow. Unless of course your looking to drown. I would say that their combined IQ's would be closer to 50. Russ C

I am looking for advice from those in the know. I am looking to purchase a 4hp outboard motor (Yamaha) on Ebay, it will come up to Canada from Florida. I have never purchased this way before so I don't know what to expect. What should I be looking at as far as extra charges (GST) at the border? Will I be able to obtain service for it in Calgary? Anything else you can let me know would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Russ C

I remember reading this as well but can't recall where.

For me it depends on the situation. If say I'm fishing a lake and a boat comes right up beside me and starts chucking flies in the water I was fishing then asks what I'm using. Well then he gets the cold shoulder. If on the other hand someone is nice and truely wants to learn then I will give him or her all the information I can to help them out. Many times I have been out fishing and have run across an angler having trouble. Along with giving them flies, I'll stick around until they catch fish. That actually makes me feel even better then catching fish myself. If you have years of built up knowledge and pass away without telling anyone...................what good was the knowledge? Russ C

As context, I come home to Alberta each year to visit family and flyfish, and on my way back to Texas I had a sad experience with the security screeners at YYC. The security line was very long and for whatever reason they were hand checking every bag in extreme detail. Well, I made it through the metal detector and two airport employees started screening my bags and going through every pocket, nook and cranny of my backpack. I had tossed my flyfishing bag inside my pack, and when they opened it they inspected every split shot, leader, spool of tippet, strike indicator and when they got to my flies they nearly had a fit. They told me I can't take fishing hooks on the plane (it turns out they are right, but I have done this dozens of times and nobody ever said anything). I showed them how small the hooks are (mostly size 16-22) and suggested they were no risk to anyone. That didn't work, so I explained that there are over 300 flies in my boxes with a value of $400-$500, but to no avail. They said they would throw them away for me. I said this is ridiculous, I fly with flies as carry-on all the time and I have had security screeners see my flies and wish me luck on my fishing trip. One of the screeners looked at me, starts shaking her head and said "listen, I will not risk losing my job for your fishing hooks." I replied "OK, but please don't throw them away, give them to someone because these flies are worth a lot of money and someone you know who fishes will appreciate receiving them." She then says, well you can always mail them to yourself. I respond saying "because it took me almost 90 minutes to get through your security line, my flight leaves in 5 minutes, my wife and four children are on the plane, and I can't miss my flight." Her reply "well, that isn't my fault, is it?" The irony should have been comical, but at this point I felt like I was in another reality and getting dizzy at the thought of losing every fly I own. They also took my three fly boxes and the fishing bag they were in. So, the moral of the story is -- WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T FORGET TO PUT YOUR FLY BOXES IN YOUR CHECKED LUGGAGE!!!!! I can' tell you how painful it was watching them throw every flybox I own in the garbage and sweep the flies I had tried to pull out of the foam in an effort to save the boxes into the trash. Ouch!! Tungsten Head over to Costco Wholesale, excellent quality and cuts of Alberta beef. Fire up the BBQ, a little Montreal Steak Spice, garlic, pepper and seasoning salt. Cooked medium rare .........yum. As well Costco is having a seafood road show going on until the 23rd of December. In my household we do the steak and seafood thing for New Years day, start the New Year off the right way. And I'm sure there will be quite a few of us that would volunteer to come over to help you and your wife consume your Christmas dinner. Russ C

Head down to Fish Creek Park (down Bowbottom Tr). Find some slower water, tie on a pheasant tail, or a san juan worm with an indicator. Put on enough weight to get your fly ticking the bottom of the river, and remember to mend your line and strike at every hesitation of your indicator. Best of luck Russ C
