chiasson Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I tried to make a poll but couldn't figure it out. Anyways, what is most number of flies you've lost in one day on the Bow to the river itself, not from loosing a fly box etc. Quote
seanbritt Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I tried to make a poll but couldn't figure it out. Anyways, what is most number of flies you've lost in one day on the Bow to the river itself, not from loosing a fly box etc. Last year, during runoff, I had a really bad time of it. Kept getting caught on all types of rubbish running through the river. Must of lost about a dozen. Quote
birchy Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 8 or 10 I'd say.. Those kind of days suck!!! The ones where you lose your double (or triple) nymph rig... spend 10 minutes tying it all up again only to lose it again on the very first cast!! AHHHHHHH! PS - I can't figure out the damn Polls either! Quote
acurrie Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Well, probably around 10-12 in one day on the bow...Now on Stauffer.. that's a different ball game... At least 12+ in less than 5 hours. Quote
bhurt Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I was out with Toolman one day last year and went through 5 dozen flies, it was a very fustrating day Quote
agbff Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Id say i lose about 9 an outting... gotta be on bottom! id say the most would have to be 12-15 Quote
trailhead Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I used to fish a hole that had a lot of overhanging trees and I lost 2 dozen there one day. To the trees, on the bottom and to some fish too. That spot doesn't exist anymore after the big flood it got filled in with gravel, otherwise I'd be back there and be losing even more. Quote
bowbonehead Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I was out with Toolman one day last year and went through 5 dozen flies, it was a very fustrating day I think after the first dozen I'd be wondering about my tippet material and replacing it! Quote
Simpson Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I think after the first dozen I'd be wondering about my tippet material and replacing it! I would be in the doz zone as well. Regarding the tippet....I learned the hard way to always have an extra spool of the stuff you use the most. Nothing like just starting the day to pull off the last 12"! Those dispensers keep it on the spool, but also hide the amount remaining! Quote
bhurt Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Had nothing to do with tippet, the section we were fishing was just before high water, and still lots of sharp ice in the water, along with alot of shale, most breaks were me breaking off of rocks and what not. Quote
maxwell Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 yea im with lk on this one... have a few days were ive lost close too 100 flies.. sometimes it sems no matter what ya do u always connect with bottom or driftingg through without a bump... will never forget one day on the crow were me and a buddy lost almost every nymph we had.. was the tippets fault.. ran out of 3 x and had nothing but 5x left with was tough with taht " bowcrow" hookset..... we were down too nothing but streamers for the last few hours of the day.. was ridiculous! Quote
Gil Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 12 flies in run off in an hour. At that point I went home....Note I now only fish one fly and run 1X tippet during run off ..... Quote
FlashGordon Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 prbly 10 rigs or so in a day... but i tend to get quite a few back...i using nothing but 10lb providing i can get it through the hook eyes so i haul up branches etc with worms, flies, lures, indies attached,i see some wild set ups, mostly big SJWs Quote
darrinhurst Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 I can't say that I've ever really counted, but now I am sure I'll start. I know that I've lost a few, mostly due to poorly tied knots, trees/grass, and bad casting with the dreaded "crack!". The most, at this point, if I could guess, would be anywhere from 5-10 in an outing. Quote
Tungsten Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Ya a dozen for me, by then im pissed .On a good day after runoff i've bin +10 before and a couple indys . Quote
SilverDoctor Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 A couple of dozen for me. Especially when nymphing, if you're not loosing flies you're not fishing. Quote
magpie Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 When you say to the river does that include the trres and shrubs on the shore? If so and I include the good old snap from the wind a dozen for sure, back when I first started fly fishing that was about all the flies I carried so I would have to go home:( Quote
scorpiondeathlock Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 do cellphone patterns count because ive lost a ton of those Quote
Castuserraticus Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 I don't enjoy the trips where I seem to spend more time retying than fishing. It's good to know I have company. Another frustration is regularly losing flies when it's your turn to fish while your buddy fishes the same fly all day while you're on the oars. Quote
chiasson Posted February 11, 2009 Author Posted February 11, 2009 I started this thread outta curiosity b/c I lost about 10 in 5 hours the other day (personal record). I can't say I've ever lost an indicator, usually it's the tippit (4X) that breaks for me. To those who mentioned loosing indys, are you fishing light non-tapered leaders? Quote
