bigbrooktrout Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Is there anyone in the cochrane area that could teach me how to tie? Quote
Rainbow Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Calgary Hook & Hackle Club is a fly tying club that has a beginners class and will be holding an open house on February 25th @ 7:30pm, come check us out. They meet in the Bow Waters Canoe Club building which is located on the Bow river off of 17th ave SE. http://hookandhackleclub.org/ Quote
Golfman09 Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I just started tying a couple of months ago and have found you tube to be a great resource. It will enable you to watch the techniques over and over to see just how things can be done. Learning how to whip finish was driving me crazy until I went to you tube......highly recommend it. The club will be awesome as well as you can get ideas on what to tie and different techniqes. Quote
Gil Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 It's not all that hard to teach yourself. Pick up an introductory book. Watch youtube. Quote
Mikey Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 If you don't mind driving into Calgary I would have no problem showing you the ropes. Quote
Guest RedWiggler Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Buy a couple books and videos. I find vids a little better to learn from as you can actually see it being done, books are great you just dont get the full picture sometimes. Take a beginner fly tying course and you will be well on your way. Quote
agbff Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 If you can get into Calgary, Country Pleasures and Fish tales usually run weekend seminars. These guy would for sure help you out... Im sure if you went in with a question they'd show you whats going on no problem. Quote
trailhead Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Try "Flytying the Anglers Art" it's a TV show that's on early on Saturday mornings on PBS. Set the VCR if you want to sleep in, the two old guys usually do three flies and it's very easy to pick up what they are doing. Quote
Bandi Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 If you need a book to learn techniques, Fly Tier's Benchside Reference is an excellent guide. http://www.amazon.com/Fly-Tiers-Benchside-...e/dp/1571881263 Quote
Leroy Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 I am one of the old guys on Fly Tying the Anglers Art. Now there is just one old guy and one young gal who also ties. Quote
regdunlop Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 I am one of the old guys on Fly Tying the Anglers Art. Now there is just one old guy and one young gal who also ties. I thought you might be "that" Leroy. Welcome to the board! Fly Tying the Angler's Art is a great, and very educational show. Worth getting up early to watch for sure! Quote
Lundvike Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 Leroy, at your tying seminar you mentioned you had a new show coming soon, when will be aired? Bigbrooktrout if you are interested I am trying to organize a fly tying evening for next Sturday the 14th if you are interested I am sure a few of us would be happy to give you some pointers. I live in Tuscany so we are practically neighbours. Quote
bhurt Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 Yeah Leroy when is your new show coming out? I haven't watched your old show yet as I have found alot of shows I grow bored with or might miss something and without the ability to go back its pretty hard sometimes, I guess I just need to record the shows on my PVR so I can go back and watch what I missed. Quote
Leroy Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 I have been out of town all weekend tying or I would have answered this sooner. The new show is to be aired in April. At least that is the goal. Washing State University, where we film, has not had the budget money to edit. We are told now it is about half completed and April is still the goal. Thanks for watching the show. it is always nice to know someone is watching and enjoying what we are foing. Quote

Flytyer Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Welcome Leroy. Did Carolyn work on the new series with you? I found it great that she did the one series with you and she adds a different spin on things as well at times. Quote
Leroy Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Yes, Carolyn will be ting with me. I agree, she does a great job even if she does'nt know the difference between "under fur" and "fuzzys." Quote
