The shots are more of them sleeping and trying to be AEG then fishing, and when they are fishing, the camera jumps around enough to induce epilepsy. and a national show that doesn't give out any names of the lakes they fish, till they hit alberta... all in all, i was thoroughly unimpressed. We've still got a long way to go before we get quality i suppose...i hope the humblefisherman can make it big, and show these guys how to make a tv series! adams Posted March 2, 2009 Share Posted March 2, 2009 Saw my first episode on WFN yesterday. It was the one where they fished from Ontario to the Yukon. I didn't think it was that bad, but I do agree with your comment re: the camera jumping around a lot. My personal opinion, but I could also do without the 1000 watt music blasting throughout; I would much rather hear the sounds of nature (birds singing, wind in the trees, water gurgling). Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I like to go along for the ride when I watch a fly fishing show and it's about slowing down and relaxing for me, not a fast-paced cast and blast/take no prisoners experience. Having said that, I would definitely watch another episode as I'm craving anything that has to do with fly fishing...... I'll just mute the volume. lorney Posted March 2, 2009 Share Posted March 2, 2009 I feel the same way. They flash through so much action so fast it leaves you wondering what really happened. They flash through still shots add a short video clip a few more still shots and their done. It felt more like watching a trailer for a show that will be coming out later. I did like seeing a little fish porn though to help get through the winter. The camera work was also a little jumpy and he seemed to missing good stuff just outside the frame. Not sure if this would show up better in HD as I only watched it in regular. I also think it is hard to condense a cross Canada adventure into 22mins. Hopefully they only get better. I found the same problem with their DVD I bought. Camera work and editing seemed questionable. More amature or low budget. They do get into some nice fish though. At the same time I wanted to offer a bit of insight into Fly Max as it may help answer some questions which were brought up here. By no means do I wish to change anyone's opinion, and again I fully respect both the good and bad, and don't wish to start a battle for any reason here. If anyone has any questions or if there is anything I can do to help out, please feel free to contact me directly at nick@canflyfish.com Fly Max was a concept born in late 2006. At the time, we (the company now known as Fly Max Films) had an opportunity to photograph quite a few fly fishing destinations in the coming year in Canada and it seemed like a great idea to bring some video cameras along. After a few months of collecting footage we decided to format what we've recorded into 30-minute-ish episodes which we would then package for DVDs, hence Fly Max Films; Vol 1. These DVDs weren't ever meant to fit a TV show format, but rather our accounts of our journeys and the excitement that came with them. Basically we didn't want to do anything like any traditional TV shows, in the sense of being highly commercial, or "talking at" people. Instead we shot very candidly, and made due with what we got instead of forcing the folks who we were shooting to conform to a particular style. As this was our first production project and a field which we had no experience in, we ran over schedule and didn't release our first disc until late 2008. In the mean time, word had got out about what we had in the works and we were approached by TV networks to package DVD our "episodes" into shorter TV ready "shows". As a result, the Fly Max TV episodes which were shot in the 2007 calendar year; a total of 6; are visibly lacking the "made for TV components" which many viewers are accustomed to. They do however showcase fly fishing in a different way than any other show out there, at least in our opinion. I fully realize that this "style" is not for everyone. The second part of Fly Max TV - Season 1; 7 episodes in total; represents episodes shot in 2008, and features a noticeably different shooting style and purpose, which will deliver many of the professional components you expect to see from any other TV show. Pro camera guys and editors were brought in to ensure quality. I sincerely hope that the difference shows. Aside form the above, we fully recognize the fact that Fly Max TV is very much a certain type of show, created for a certain type of audience. Instead of changing Fly Max and the standard that it's set this year, we are introducing another fly fishing TV series in 2009, completely shot with TV in mind, which will feature many of the elements we are missing today. The end result will be a product for one type of audience with Fly Max and a product for a different type of audience with our new show. I hope with outmost sincerity that folks will give both shows a chance to grow, improve and help bring more attention to fly fishing in their own unique ways, especially on a channel known for its non-fly programming. We've never claimed to have made a "perfect" show; much like there will never be a perfect song or band. I can however promise you that we will do everything we can do get better and listen to our viewers, whether we like the feedback they have or not. Thanks for your time and feedback again guys! Conor Posted March 3, 2009 Share Posted March 3, 2009 I saw the the ON to YK episode on WFN the other day. I am so glad I caught it; it is now a series recording on my PVR. I have been watching pretty well all the FF shows available on cable since I got a PVR. The only one that really keeps my interest is "Fly Tying: the angler's art," probably because there is something different in every episode. I still enjoy the others, but it is mostly lot of the same old, same old... The episode of FlyMax I saw was by far the best FF show I have seen in a long time. The format is refreshing and engaging. I felt like I had a few new fishing buddies. I found my heart beating like I was actually there. I think some extra info (like a tying segment or a bit of technique/ trial error insight) would add value to the show, as long as it could be incorporated without killing the energy of the format. Do you follow this site? Do you know someone in Calgary and they told you about it? The first negative comment was at 11:40 and your reply was at 7:30, so like 8 hrs. (and very nice reply by the way. it can be difficult to rebut a comment on line and do it in a way that can only be interpreted as sincere). Anyway, best of luck with the show. Sorry for the hijack! Its not a hard place to get, and this forum alone has pushed hundreds of new fisher's that way (or so i believe anyway..)...just kinda peeve'd me off big time that they would do that....It'd be one thing if they did that for every body of water they fished...but not cool the way they did it Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
bulltrout Posted March 7, 2009 Share Posted March 7, 2009 to all that complain about the shows or didn't like them: ...please remember that NO ONE is perfect and hindsight is 20/20...i'm sure the editors didn't mention the lake intentionally (after all, like nick said, they are still in the beginning stages)...also keep in mind what Fly Max advertises at the very beginning "a new generation of fishing ENTERTAINMENT", not INSTRUCTION...my 2 cents...
