Pythagoras Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 My brother caught this a couple weeks back..... Secret river in NB....starts with an M... Quick measured at 44" and the guide estimated 30lbs+. The camp rule is not to fight a fish longer than 18 mins. Where they got 18 mins i don't know. With a little pleading he fought it for about 25 mins (guide said the water was cold and the fish did rest a bit)....on 8lb test! Fish was released strong. Quote
Taco Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 I think he trumped ya.......cripe wadda fish Quote
Pythagoras Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 Very nice. Spey rod? Nope, single hander. The river at the lodge is quite small, distance isn't a problem...it might be...Highwood size...ish I spoke to him last week and he was still pretty stoked. Said she tailed walked in the sun for him. 126barnes Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Very nice fish, but I suspect that the guide was looking for a nice tip. Quote
SilverDoctor Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Very impressive, thanks for posting. Quote
drewflyfish Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 I don't want to kill your post, because it's a beautiful looking fish. But come on, 44"....here's a fish from October 2007. About a 14lb fall fish out of the Margaree River. I think the fix was in and your buddy's guide was looking for a nice tip. I'd say your buddy's fish would probably be a 15 lb fish. If it was a 30lb Atlantic Salmon, you would be able to tell. I have some pics of some monsters that we have gotten out of the Margaree and West rivers over the years. I'll try and post them to give you some idea of a "big" fish...but heck, your buddy's fish is a nice fish none the less!! Cheers Quote
SamIam Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 I would have to agree with drewflyfish.....pretty tough to wrap your hand around the wrist of a 30# fish. But definitely a nice fish. Wonder where the 18 minutes came from? And what are you supposed to do when your 18 minutes are up? Leave the fly in the fish's mouth? Quote
Pythagoras Posted September 23, 2008 Author Posted September 23, 2008 I just post what he said...still, there is a huge difference between that old hen and the male...both in length and girth...no matter anyhoo... After 18 mins you are instructed to break the fish off... Quote

birchy Posted September 24, 2008 Posted September 24, 2008 any chance thats a brown from the sea? The guys back hand it covering one of the "identifyers", but based on the mouth not extending past the eye, I'd say it's a Salmon for sure. Quote
tbone Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Nice fish, I would like to catch an atlantic one day. I think the guide was a little off saying 44" and 30 pounds - Ive caught 30 pound chinook salmon that look twice that size ... but who knows the pic might not do it justice. Thanks for sharing it with us. Quote
