backyardhunter3006 Posted August 5, 2014 Posted August 5, 2014 Before I start telling you guys about my trip I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. I started fly fishing by myself last year just before my family went on our camping trip down to yellowstone. A couple of months before we left I read that the best way to fish the park was with a fly rod so I ordered a $100 full set up on bass pro. Ever since that trip I have been hooked on fly fishing and I have even gotten into fly tying. I have been tying flies for about 7 months now. I have got pretty good at tying and I have a couple repeat clients that buy my flies. I now tie all of my flies. My family goes on backpacking trips every year and this year was my 4th trip. This year when my grandpa told me that we were going to egypt lake I did some research and found the threads on here about the area. I also have to give troutlover and uber for giving me information about fishing in the area and I would have never had any clue about how to fish the area if it wasn't go them. My family which includes me, my mom, dad, sister, cousins, uncle, grandpa, and great uncle just got back today after our 4 day hike to egypt lake campground. We left on Friday and took the bus up to sunshine village and started heading up to egypt lake. We went over many passes including Simpson and Healy pass. Me an my dad stopped at Healy creek to break up the hike and catch a couple cutts. The fish were small but it was fun. We made it to the pass and started the downhill to the campground. We set up camp and I went down to the creek not expecting to catch much. I tied on a small olive stimulator and a bead head pheasant tail as a dropper. I ended up catching about 40 cuts and brookies in the creek. The fish were mainly small but I ended up catching a 14 inch cutt on a stimi. We woke up on day 2 and headed up to egypt lake to check it out. I fished for about 10 minuites with an olive wooly bugger but had no luck. I only had 10 minuites because we wanted to head up to mummy lake. About an hour or so later we reached mummy lake and on my second cast I hooked into a awesome cutt. In the next hour I caught over 35 cutts all on the olive wooly bugger. I was thinking of putting on a dry but the bugger was so hot I never took it off. This lake had the best fishing I had ever experienced and probably the best I will ever see. The fishing was so good that on every cast there was a fish following or biting the fly. It was so hard to leave but I finally did after catching one last fish for good measure. We headed back and went to bed. The next day we headed up to pharoah lake and we caught 2 more cutts but it started raining so we headed back to the campsite. On day 4 we made the hike out and again stopped for a fish at Healy creek for some small cutts. We made it to the parking lot and headed home. backyardhunter3006 Posted August 14, 2014 Author Posted August 14, 2014 It was a 14 km hike into egypt lake campground from sunshine village. It is a few more km's to mummy lake. I can't remember how long it took us exactly but it was a pretty good hike in and you have to be fit. It must have been close to 6 hours or somewhere near that. On the way back you have a long uphill grind to Healy pass then it is downhill for the rest. We went in on the Friday of the long weekend and came back on the Monday. I would reccomend staying at least 2 nights at the campground so you can explore the area. The fishing is incredible and I would really recommend going there. Quote
