ladystrange Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 just a general question to all you lovelies out there. most of us have more than one rod some of you more than you can count. i'm curious as to which rod configuration works best in your not so humble personal opinions i like my 2pc for lakes, slap it together, throw it on the boat and go. space in the truck isnt a concern with the longer tube but for small rivers, back packing and manuvering through brush i prefer my 4pc, i can break it down, wander through the scrub and not worry about snagging my tip on a branch or tree that jumps out and tries to bite me while minding my own business. robert Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I like 4 pieces but it's been awhile Well that didn't take long at all Quote
Jayhad Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I dumped all my 2 piece rods this last season. With the advances in ferrels (sp) we have seen in the last decade I would never buy a 2 piece anymore. Having a 2 piece is fine if you don't hike through the bush but once you use a 4 piece you soon see the space saving advantages Jay Quote
maxwell Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 i like 4 piece and really dig a few of my 3 piece rods... Quote
Taco Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 cake that is...... I agree with Jay, if I were buying new tech rods they'd all be 3 and 4pc Quote
Buck Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I'm on the 4 piece train, it all comes down to saving space when your lugging gear around in the bush. Quote
Guest 420FLYFISHIN Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 4pc all the way. unless they can make a walking stick rod then 2 pc is to awkward and bulky in the bush. Its nice ot be able to strap it to the bag so you still have free hands Quote
SilverDoctor Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 A four and three piece configuration is my favorite. Have a few older 2 piece but most are fiberglass and bamboo. And yes I am lovely but for some reason only when a malt beverage is involved. Quote
Ricinus Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I also prefer a 4 piece but if I found a 2 piece at a really good price, I wouldn't walk away. Regards Mike Quote
ladystrange Posted February 3, 2010 Author Posted February 3, 2010 And yes I am lovely but for some reason only when a malt beverage is involved. awww, doc you are always lovely interesting opinions on 2pc vs. 3/4 Quote
ladystrange Posted February 3, 2010 Author Posted February 3, 2010 I also prefer a 4 piece but if I found a 2 piece at a really good price, I wouldn't walk away. Regards Mike does price really matter? i'd still pay a little bit more for the 4pc just for the convenience of the bush i fish through. personally, if there were 2 rods, exactly the same except 2 vs. 4 and unless the 2pc was a some ridculously silly amount less, which it wouldnt be... i'd pay for the 4pc. so what's the limit Quote
Nick0Danger Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I find that you get better deals on 2 piece rods as they is much less demand for them that said owe a few 2 pieces and a few 4 pieces, use em all. But for hiking i take the 4 piecers. Quote

They are hard to find out here so I buy off the dread auction site. 4 piece are not often available and are pricey, but 2 piece are seen more often and the MOST I've paid is 1/2 price. Pythagoras Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I have a 4p 6wt and a 3p 2/3...carry 'em ninja style in my Mongo vest on climbs out....sweet... Quote
Pipestoneflyguy Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 First few rods were 2 piece but after trying a 4 piece I haven't gone back, other than the spey and a few antiques tha's all I use now Quote
Highlander Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I don't see myself buying another 2 piece rod. I like my 4-piece rods for the convenience and I don't think I'm losing anything in the action of the rod. My favourite rod is a 3-piece, but thats the thing I like the least about it. I much prefer a rod that can be broken down into 2 equal sized sections, so 4 and 6 piece rods would be preferable to me. Odd numbered section rods irritate me, but the ones I have are so good that I suffer in silence (mostly). (Are you listening Sage, make a 000-TXL in a 4-piece and the world will beat a path to your door.....well I will anyway!) Quote
darrinhurst Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Had a two piece. Swapped it out for a four piece. The longer tube was too big for the car, love the four piece for convenience. The ONLY thing that I liked about the two piece was the assembly took two or three seconds. Other than that, it was too bulky. Looked like a gun case....lol Quote
126barnes Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 All my rods are 4 pcs, but I have yet to break them down that way unless I'm storing them in the rod case. Always break it down in half for transportation. Quote
regdunlop Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 Why stop at 4 pieces? I've got a 6pc Dan Craft for backpacking that casts just as well as, if not better than, all the 3 and 4 piece rods I've casted. A 6pc 9 footer really breaks down small and makes bushwacking that much easier. Just my 2 cents. Quote
ladystrange Posted February 4, 2010 Author Posted February 4, 2010 interesting thought on the 6pc. i havent seen too many and i havent had a chance to cast one. other than breaking down to a handful of toothpicks, is there a significant difference in performance? Quote
SilverDoctor Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 I remember seeing in the 2009 Partridge of Redditch catalog they had 6 & 8 piece fly rods and 12 piece Salmon Travel Fly Rods. Nice compact package. Quote
ladystrange Posted February 4, 2010 Author Posted February 4, 2010 8?... i'd never keep them straight Quote
Teck71 Posted February 4, 2010 Posted February 4, 2010 8 I would get to the river and go piece 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..F$@k. to many pieces, but I am digging my 4pc 4wt. Quote
