More Cases Of Whirling Disease Found
adc replied to fishjunkie's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Clive, by "jailing the perps" I think Mr. Anderson was referring to all past Conservative governments......Your goose explanation makes sense, but I'm sure that if Shannon Phillips had been around 20 years ago she'd not have allowed them to play in the mud..... -
I met Jeff at Bullshead in 2006. Clive and I were there in early spring, I was new to FFC, and Clive says "hey, there's Beedhead, say hello"......From that point on I hardly ever fished Bullshad without meeting Jeff......He always had a story for you, always had a smile, and in my recollection he always had a Carling Black in his cooler......He was a great angler, respectful of his fellow anglers, the fish and the surroundings.....Last fall he was in his glory in his tin boat ( he always disdained boats until he got that one!!...) and he fished near Clive and I one day and outfished us about three to one.......Our shouts of F*** You Jeff didn't bother him at all!!..... His long phone calls were legendary and while I didn't know it at the time, I was lucky to be on the other end of a few of them.....Last year, late spring, one of those calls was about how frustrated he was with the fish leaving the lake over the spillway.....He spent many hours getting all the wheels in motion to do a fish rescue......Amazingly he was responsible, with help from many from this Board in saving over 300 trout for the benefit of all who love to fish this lake...... He loved his kids and his girlfriend Nicole and always talked about how proud he was of his daughters and his girlfriend and how they shared his passion for flyfishing......He was one of a kind and will be missed by his family, all who knew him and many that didn't.......The flyfishing fraternity has indeed lost a true Friend.......

The biologists already have the mandate to find 2 more per region under the Quality Lakes proposal which occured from Roundtable discussions several years ago..........So far I'm not sure any new Quality Lakes have been identified......In our region, Lethbridge area, our bio. has a list of possibles but so far has been unable to get any agreement to implement Quality Regs on any of them.......... Anyway, Smitty, I agree with you that making and wholesale changes will NOT happen......
-
I think the Roudtables are by invitation........Usually to fish clubs/groups/organizations with one or two reps per........The whole Rountable thing was implemented so the gov't could say they were "listening" to the grassroots..........May be time for a change there as well............ Back to the Quality thing.........Good ideas you have and I would support.........However, you can see that before you're out of the gate you have serious opposition/concerns by some...........It is a very difficult issue in a province with a shortage of water...........No harm trying though---that's how Muir, Bullshead, Police came into being...........Perfect, no, but a small step for the growing number of anglers who would like a chance to catch larger fish and feel they should have a more proportionate share of stocked lakes regulated to achieve that end..........

Kananaskis Lakes - Another Quality Fishery
adc replied to fishpro's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Good job Guys........I think the gov't folks are pretty onside with creating more Quality Fisheries........Now is a good time to continue the fight for more, for sure............As BT says, let's get another half dozen trout lakes in the QF regs while the momentum is there............... -
Maybe too much information, Terry.............Have a great Xmas..........

A Interesting Study Of Anglers Vs Enforcement
adc replied to DonAndersen's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
I think even the AF&G folks would buy into a nominal checkoff for more education/enforcement if they know that's where the money goes........I think the concerns with ACA checkoffs previously had to do with how the money was spent and I seem to recall concerns by some over spending funds on dickey bird research not directly related to fisheries or hunting.......... -
A Interesting Study Of Anglers Vs Enforcement
adc replied to DonAndersen's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Lot's of good points........I hate to say this, but Stream Watch is NOT the answer..........We are running into donor fatigue as it's the same people/corporations year after year and they are tired......It needs more funding.........I think most everyone but the poachers agree we need more enforcement and we have a vehicle in ACA to fund, through an additional, nominal license fee an "Education Fund" which could encompass both the education AND enforcement requirements not just on the east slopes but elsewhere as well...........More hunting enforcement is needed as well.............How about a $5.00 per license sold (hunting or fishing) fee for the "ACA Education Fund" with the monies to be used only and specifically for angler and hunter education and enforcement..........Would seem relatively simple and painless for all........ -
Just on my way out the door headed for Smithers..........As rickr said "this may be the best thread ever".......Dutchie made a nice post and there were others and to use a Dutchie phrase, "it's now turned into a *hit storm"......Oh well........I hope I will hook my first steelhead and I hope my actions will live up to the standards of most----assholes and otherwise.......Ciao for now........

The Otters Are Coming - The Otters Are Coming
adc replied to DonAndersen's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Don, I fished one of your favourite little lakes just inside the BC border yesterday as I have many times before........Never seen an otter there until yesterday..........Big boy, about 4 feet long and eating a trout when I spooked him from the bank..........How did he get there??........Not much water in or out of there so I guess he packed a lunch and did the overland trip..........Anyway, I share your concern as they are fish eating machines----along with cormorants and white pelicans........... -
Hey Jeff..... So sorry to hear about your misfortunes..........Clive filled me in a bit after chatting with you when you got back..........Bummer for sure..........You wanted the trip of a lifetime and I guess you're hoping that was it..........Next one will be better..........At least you stayed as positive as possible and fooled a few fish............Good on ya!!.......Will look forward to seeing you on some open water at Bullshead one of these days soon...........I leave for Belize on Tuesday...........Hoping my trip is not quite as "eventful" as yours..........

Police Lake And Quality Fisheries Support
adc replied to dryfly's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Good point Troutlover.........Unfortunately the Town of Cardston probably has not yet see the economic spin this lake can---and will---produce...........It's just a bit too early but in a year or two when the quality improves to where it can be with a bit more time, you're dead on...........There will be significant economic benefits to the area............. -
Condolences, Lynn..........I haven't had the pleasure of a face to face, just a few emails and phone conversations, but I feel for you pain and thoughts are with you.......

Had to bring this thread back to the top of the page..........Things are heating up a bit here in Lethbridge (unfortunately not weather-wise) with a recent letter to the editor in the local rag which basically suggests that the Quality Fishery reg's on Police Lake are just one step towards privatization by the elite fly-fishers and encouraging everyone and their family, whether they fish or not, to vote to have the old reg's re-instated........As well, a letter to one of the TU Chapter directors here stated that with the change in regulations at Police he has been "basically shut out of a fishing paradise I have enjoyed since the sixties and the resentment I feel knows no bounds."........While I don't propose to understand what goes on in the minds of folk to make them think this way I can only say that it is IMPERATIVE THAT ALL WHO WANT TO SEE THE MOVE TO MORE CHOICE FOR ANGLERS AND THE NEED FOR MORE QUALITY FISHERIES NEED TO VOTE!!........Here's how to vote: Email Terry.Clayton@gov.ab.ca. Put "Police Lake Review" in the subject line and vote to keep the current Quality Fishery Reg's

What Line To Use For Whitefish And Lake Trout ?
adc replied to Austin's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
40 lb. test tiger wire, a rapala and a 6 ft. bait caster........... -
Simple math Don but a bit flawed...........First, estimates are that when stocking fry or even fingerlings, mortality due to birds, fish, a changed environment and other critters is about 75-90%......We also know that there has been and will continue to be some poaching and there is hooking mortality, whether we want to admit it or not, by the C&R fraternity..........There were also a number of "legal" fish killed over the last 3 years.............Sooooooooo, while I agree that once the population stabilizes at a level that allows reasonable annual growth and the stocking rate is appropriate (I neither I nor the bio's know what that number should be) the fishery will continue to evolve.........The key is, to keep the existing regs and allow that evolution which is why everyone needs to cast their VOTE!!
-
Or, strictly catch and release...........Or 1 of any size maximum 5 per angler per season...........Or instead of closure Nov. 1 to March 31, just NO ICE FISHING.......... There are all kinds of things that could/should change in the regs, many of which have already been debated on this Board.........However, our biggest concern at moment is to keep Police as a Quality Fishery with the existing regs. and then those can be further reviewed over time........Having said that, there's no harm, Sundance in stating your preference to Terry when you cast your vote!!
-
Thanks Dennis........I think you Muir guys are still the pioneers of the Quality Fishery movement...........
