My First Bow River Trout...
headscan replied to ghellard's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Just downstream of a boat launch can be one of the worst places to fish early in the morning. Not excusing their behaviour, just saying you'll get a lot of boats and pontoons come through at that time eager to get into fish right away. Try fishing upstream of the launches early - there's lots of productive water between the extender and the boat launch. If you want an awesome crash course on fishing the Bow including reading water, proper rigs, and fly selection then send a pm to Maxwell. -
Advice On A Starter Fly Rod
headscan replied to ksmitty's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Go down to one of the local fly shops and test cast a bunch of different rods in your price point. There are lots of good entry level rods around like the Sage Vantage and Flight, some from Redington, and Amundson, plus some others I'm probably forgetting. Buy the rod that feels right to you, not one that feels right to other people. Have you taken any casting lessons yet? Usually the shops have a few different rods for people to try during the lessons and you might find the right one for you then. -
I think the TMC 2488 would have the same problem since it's a light wire hook. The 2457 or any other heavy wire hook would probably do the trick.

Ditto. Last fall I threw every technical BWO fly in my box at some risers without a single sniff. Finally tied on a size 18 Para Adams and got a take on the first cast. Now I always start with the Para Adams and switch to a BWO hackle stacker if that doesn't work.

Fish Tales carried Cloudveil locally. It might be worth seeing if they have any contact info or something that might help.

Rick, not talking about spawning closures either but rather protection of spawning habitat and that sort of thing. I don't believe their plan is talking about "all or none" but just better protection all around. In any case, my purpose for posting wasn't so much to debate their plans as it was about someone doing a similar sort of study about the value of a single steelhead, east slope cutt, or even bow river brown to make the powers that be realize that yes, these fish do have more value than they think in terms of tourism dollars and maybe it's worthwhile to spend some money to protect them better in terms of enforcement, water usage, etc. while not implementing complete angling bans as that would decrease the value of the fish.
-
The management plan they're talking about in the article isn't just about C&R vs killing your limit, it's also about spawning habitat and bycatch from commercial fishing.

http://www.keysnet.com/2010/09/11/257058/b...protection.html Interesting way to get more protection for a fish while tying its value directly to angling. Maybe someone should try the same math on some western Canadian fish...

I don't think the VXP is really much of a secret... "While Sage says officially that these rods aren’t really ‘the new XP’, pull one of their people aside and they’ll tell you that the taper is a lot like an updated version of the XP taper. Besides, the name can’t be a coincidence, can it? The single handers come from 3 to 10 weight and run $485 to $525. There’s also a 12′9″ 6 weight spey rod and a 13′3″ 7 weight double-hander. George Cook brought the 7 to the Dean this year and said he liked it." http://www.deneki.com/2010/09/iftd-gear-sa...edington-tibor/

That's much higher than what I've paid dealing with a shop. I think it was more like $50-$60.

They're pretty good to deal with, though I've only dealt with them on rods that were currently in production. Don't know how it is for a discontinued rod like your XP. I just brought the broken section into the shop I bought the rod from and they took care of the rest for me. Just had to pay the warranty/shipping cost. If you bought it online or in another city you can also send it directly to Sage yourself. Info is here: http://www.sageflyfish.com/Resources/Warranty/

Some new stuff from IFTD. Airflo skagit switch heads and Sage TCX switch and VXP spey rods. Also a new Rio Steelhead Scandi line.

http://www.padgadget.com/app-details/?a=38...p;f=100&t=1 Would've preferred an iPhone version, but I'll give it a try tonight.

Could also be because the odds of a fly fisherman packing heat are much higher in Montana than in Alberta...

These look interesting. http://www.caddisflyshop.com/fish-skulls.html

Tapatalk Forum App For Handhelds
headscan replied to brewingup's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
I've had no problems viewing and posting to the forum from Mobile Safari on my iPhone for the last few years. Can't see myself paying $3 for an app that basically does the same thing. -
Sockeye are pretty lockjawed when it comes to taking a fly, so you probably don't have to worry.

Fish Tales carries Korkers so you might want to see if they have replacement laces. If it's a warranty thing I think they might be able to help you out with that too.

Dogs Vs Fishermen And Vice Versa
headscan replied to LynnF's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
I've had the exact same experience and at the time chalked it up to me reading too much into it. Good to know I'm not alone. I don't fish at the dog park or even take my dog there any more because it just isn't worth the headaches. -
I usually use either a Rio 15' type 3 or type 6 sink tip on the Bow depending on current and water depth. Other weight and length combinations would work as well. What kind of line are you using?
-
My personal preference is to swing streamers. It'll give you lots of practice for those steelhead and salmon as well. Remember that spey casting isn't as much about the amount of line you're throwing as the efficiency of the cast and keeping your fly in the water longer.
-
Sounds like it should be pretty interesting.

I'll have one with me in Alaska as well, so no worries.
