If you aren't picky about Mk IV vs a newer one some shops are blowing out their Mk VIs on eBay to make room for the Mk VIIs. I picked up a 3 3/4" Mk VI for $300 a couple months ago. Works great on a 12'6" 5wt.

Haven't cast the 7110 or 7119 but I have the 6110Z, 5126Z, and 7126TCX and like em each for different things. The TCX is a bit faster than the Z-Axis, but it only needs a minor adjustment in casting stroke to go from one to the other. Your Dredger and CND are significantly slower action than either of them. I've never cast the 9140 though. Maybe wait for the show and see if they have both rods at the Sage booth that you can test on the casting pond before you plunk down a significant chunk of change.

I have G4Zs, G3 Guides, and Guide pants all in size large with the 9-11 stocking foot. I wear a size 11.5 to 12 shoe and have a wide foot and don't have any problems wearing Patagonia ultra heavyweight mountaineering socks with them. Spend the extra money on G4Zs, you won't regret it.

Swinging streamers is usually a lower percentage game than nymphing even in the summer. Since winter nymphing is slower than in the summer you can expect winter swinging to be even lower - but it can still be done. The fish are just less likely to chase a swung fly compared to a nymph or streamer that dead drifts right in front of them. The fish are also more likely to be holding in slow and deep water that isn't ideal for swinging through. Since the water flows will be slow you may also want to stick to lighter tips or polyleaders. Last winter I had luck swinging leech patterns and intruders. Had one smaller brown take a hot pink intruder that was almost as big as he was.

Only the older ones. The newer ones have a different accent that I can't quite place...

Good info. Two more questions - is the reel fully caged? and is the spool rim exposed for palming?
-
Aren't the wool-lined stocking feet a fairly new feature? Considering Patagonia has a pretty good warranty program why don't you send them in for repairs?

Love it except for the hotspur-style double handles - my knuckles hurt just looking at them. Nice to see someone other than Hardy making a nice spey-sized clicker at a reasonable price, especially a Canadian company. So is the weight of both spools the same or is that the weight with the No. 8 spool?

First, what are you going to use the rod for? Swinging streamers for trout on the Bow? Steelhead? That will influence the length and weight of rod you should look at. There are good deals to be found in the trading post, but you can also get some good quality new rods at a decent price - Amundson, TFO, Echo, and Beulah I think. Whether you go new or used, make sure to try it out first.

Switch Setup For Sink Tips And Big Flies.
headscan replied to bowbuster's topic in Spey Casters Lounge
If you're blowing your anchor try slowing down your cast, particularly the sweep and D-loop formation. Your cast isn't going as far when you wade deeper because the bottom of your D-loop might be hitting the water. Try doing your sweep and D-loop formation a bit higher when you wade deep. You still won't get the same distance wading deep - I think I read an estimate that you lose almost 10' of casting distance for every foot deeper you are. If you're planning on doing a lot of deep wading and need distance you might want to look at a longer rod. If you can, try to find a casting instructor out there. It's amazing how much you can improve in a single day with qualified instruction. If you keep the length of your sink tip shorter than the length of your rod it'll be easier to cast. I use the 15' Rio tips cut back to 12' on my 12'6" rod. It'll still cast the full 15' tips, but not as nicely as 12'. If you're fishing different tip lengths, you can slow down your cast to keep from blowing your anchor on the very short ones or can compensate the tip length with a cheater. That's the whole concept behind the Rio Skagit MOW tips. Go with whatever you feel most comfortable with and adjust your cast to tip length/weight as necessary. -
The guys I fish with who run jets on the Bow would never do that and always give drift boats and wading anglers a wide berth. They know that they can easily get to another spot in a matter of minutes with ease. I've had drift boats and pontoons low hole me or fish through the run I'm in plenty of times as well but I don't think they're all like that or should be banned. The thing is, you tend to remember the douchebags and not the courteous ones.

Birchy got it. The bubbles are air expelled from the fish's gills when they take something off the surface.

Another great self-taught spey caster...

Isn't that Hannah Belford? I would suggest not watching the video unless you're going steelheading soon.

I get 366 on oanda.com. Are you thinking Zimbabwe may try to annex Austria and the Sudetenland?

Was good to get out and cast a couple of rods I've never tried before - the Loomis NRX 13' 8/9 and the Amundson 11' 3/4. I was pretty impressed by the Amundson. At the price point I think it's a good starting point for people wanting to try spey casting for trout for the first time. Nice to meet a few new people and see some familiar faces. -

Should be a good time as always. -
Didn't notice any of the local shops shut down after Bass Pro opened so I can't see how Cabela's will affect them or the shops in Edmonton. Much ado about nothing.
-
For the Bow I use somewhere around 50-75 yds of 20lb dacron. Go with however much you need to fill your reel though. I don't fish still water, but I think you might want a bit more backing on your reel.

Hail Damage Estimate Inquiry
headscan replied to ÜberFly's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Oh, they do. Just wait until your policy is up for renewal and they increase your premiums because you made a claim. I'm guessing that everyone's premiums (both home and auto) will probably go up next year because of the amount of damage done by that hail storm. -
