Yeah, that's what it is. It's a true warranty unlike a lot of the fly rod ones. Manufacturer defect is lifetime warranty without charge. Repairs will cost you money, though the first repair is free.

I think the Korkers are also less expensive than the Simms and Patagonia boots. Remember, the warranty is always built into the price. The lifetime warranties usually only cover manufacturer defect - with Simms the first repair is free and after that you have to pay. I'll still take the Simms over Korkers any day, but that's a personal preference.

A friend of mine is trying to sell some fly fishing stuff that belonged to his father in-law and I'm trying to help him figure out the value of the items. One of the things he has is a Roots Dubbing Machine made in Kamloops. I had never heard of it before and it seems the company is no longer in business. Google searches haven't helped with much. If anyone has any sort of info, particularly on how much they sell for I'd appreciate it. PM's are fine.

Nice thing about Vibram soles is the rest of the boot will probably wear out long before the soles do if my experience with their hiking boot soles is any indication.

Unless you're one of those "buy American" types I don't think it makes much difference. Quality is quality regardless of where it was made or assembled. I've used great gear and crap gear that was made in the US as well as overseas.

Patagonia has a pretty good warranty policy, so if the soles wore out quickly they'd probably take them back.

I have incredibly bad knees - arthritis in one and the other was destroyed in a skiing accident - so I need boots with excellent support. I bought a pair of Simms G4 boots this year and they're comparable in comfort and support to my Zamberlan hiking boots. Very easy to get in and out of with the speed lacing system that doesn't break like the Boa system on the Korkers. My only suggestion is to ditch the factory laces off the bat and get a pair of kevlar laces instead.

Exactly. So why would you purposely want to use a tool (in this case a mid-belly line) that makes the job more difficult? How so?

I think a lot of people casting scandi and mid-belly lines only use those casts for the most part as well. Skagit is much more versatile than many people think and you can do snake rolls and even single speys with a skagit, not to mention perry pokes. I think everyone should try multiple line types and see which they prefer and use the right tool for them.

I love a skagit with a sink tip for swinging streamers. If you get a couple of different sink tip weights (type 3 and 6) you can use those to adjust your depth and tie your streamers with less weight making them a lot easier to cast. I'd head over to Fish Tales and ask to borrow their compact skagit kit to figure out which one works best for you. Try starting with the 450 grain head and either work your way up or down to find the optimal weight for your cast. You can probably get a slightly longer drift with a spey rod for nymphing. The thing is, if you have a lot of line on the water it can be more difficult to mend and when that indicator moves picking all that line up off the water to set the hook in time is difficult. I stopped nymphing with my spey rod for those exact reasons. Instead I just spey cast my single-hand rod for nymphing. This is my opinion based upon my own experience and should not be taken as a condemnation of nymphing with a spey rod. YMMV.

Have you checked Michaels or any of the other art stores? Sounds like the type of thing they'd carry. If you wear glasses you might also want to check into the kind that clip over them since they're supposed to provide better depth perception.

There are some pretty ridiculous lineups for the shot and not all of us have had time to stand in one of them. So what are we supposed to do to keep from catching it in the meantime? Yeah, I know about washing your hands regularly and using hand sanitizers, but this is airborne too right? In the next two weeks I'll be flying to Ottawa, Mexico City, Toronto, and LA and I'd really like to do everything I can to minimize my risk.

The problem is the headlines they use. If you read the flu rage article it becomes apparent that it's far from "exploding across Canada". Most people don't read beyond the headlines. Something to do with our quick-fix attention deficit culture. I do a lot of media interviews - probably well over 100 so far this year alone - and they want to know the bad stuff, not the good because that's what attracts readers/viewers. I've seen my own words misquoted or taken out of context to satisfy the writer's story angle as well. Relaying accurate information is one thing, but using sensational and possibly misleading headlines to draw people doesn't help anyone. I know the Herald (and all of CanWest Global) is hurting badly for money, but that's no excuse. Also note that my condemnation of the reporting doesn't reflect my view on the vaccine. I was planning on leaving the office early today to get my shot until I heard about the closures (through a coworker, not the Herald).
