Tungsten, are you saying that the barbless hooks have a smaller gape than the barbed ones? If so, that can make a difference on getting a good hook set with smaller flies.

Peter, I'm pretty sure it's a $5 discount coupon for buying something from the FlyFusion store so you need to have something in your cart to use it.

I'm totally ADD about tying flies. After I tie a few of a certain pattern I get bored and have to tie something else instead. Usually that means tying a few nymphs, then a streamer, then a few more nymphs. I'll tie quite a bit while watching tv, but my most productive tying is the night before I know I'm going fishing. Then I just look at my fly box to see what I'm running low on and will probably need at that time of the year. Just make sure whatever routine you get into it's enjoyable for you.

Brad, I think the discount coupon was 2 years ago. There weren't any discount coupons last year that I can recall. Really, it's only $10 to get in and the parking is free. There are tons of free demos going on. How much does one trip to the fly shop cost you?

I think Tungsten is right about it being 70 denier UTC thread. That thread is made by Wapsi and they also make tying kits. 70 denier is made for flies size 14 and smaller - similar to 8/0 thread. Try using less tension on the thread and it should be fine for smaller stuff. Be careful around the hook point because if you catch your thread on it there's a good chance it'll break. I think there may be another answer for the fibres separating. The tying thread is basically just a bunch of fibres twisted together. If you let your bobbin dangle it'll sometimes start spinning counter clockwise - this is the thread untwisting. Sometimes you want to do this like when the tying directions say to use flattened thread to tie in a material. If the fibres are separating when you don't want them to, try spinning your bobbin clockwise a bit to re-twist it. I highly recommend a book like the Fly Tier's Benchside Reference or the Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying. Youtube is also a fantastic source of fly tying videos. I pretty much used those three sources to learn how to tie without a single lesson, though lessons aren't a bad thing.

To attach leader to tippet use a double surgeon's knot. Attach the tippet to your top fly. Take another length of tippet - 12 inches or so - and tie it to the bend of the hook with a clinch knot. Attach your next fly to the other end of the tippet. Repeat for your third fly. Another option is to attach the second length of tippet to the eye of the hook on your top fly instead of the bend of the hook. Some people use this, but I prefer attaching the tippet to the bend. Take a look at these articles: http://flyfishcalgary.com/nymphing_primer.php http://www.midcurrent.com/articles/techniq...ing_double.aspx

For connecting tippet to nymphs I use a plain old clinch knot - either for connecting to the eye or the bend of the hook. For streamers the Rapala knot is my favourite. A bimini twist is actually not very difficult at all, but for trout fishing if you aren't changing out your whole line an albright knot works just fine.

I'm with Jim on this one.

Any chance of posting some of the major gear that was stolen like the rods and reels? A lot of people here are always checking Kijiji, eBay, etc. for gear and might spot the stolen stuff being sold.

Saw something similar on the Deneki Outdoors blog a while back and thought it would be interesting. So what's the most unusual item you carry in your boat bag, backpack, or fly vest? I always carry a couple of balls because I fish with my dog a lot and we stop to take fetch breaks.

Aren't those the lines they usually sell at Canadian Tire and Wal-Mart? Hope you didn't pay more than $30 for it... -

Some of my friends already think my fly fishing and tying obsession is a little strange. Can't imagine what they'd think if they walked into my place and saw pink condoms scattered around my tying area. I think I'll pass on tying any of these...

The Lines Bought In Vain Club
headscan replied to chiasson's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Actually, it happens to me way more often with single hand lines than spey lines thanks to the Airflo kits at Fish Tales. I've lost track of how many single-handed lines I've bought and sold after only one or two days. -
I read they also eat berries that fall into the water so a globug might work or just tie some green craft fur to a hook. If your hook gets some weeds or grass caught in it would that be considered using bait?
-
Anyone have experience with the Guideline single-handed lines? I'm specifically interested in the Bullet taper. Also wondering who manufactures the lines for them. http://www.guideline.no/?module=Webshop;ac...late=engWebshop

Are you sure it was photocopies and not because of a Telus data stick? Sorry, couldn't resist...

When the iPhone was launched in Canada a couple years ago I admit to standing in line to get one on the first day. By the time I got mine, the Rogers computer systems were barely working from being overloaded. As a result it didn't get recorded in the system that I opted for the 6GB a month data plan at $30. A couple of weeks later I get a call from Rogers customer service to warn me that my data usage was around $200 so far for the month. I explained that I had asked for the data plan, she said she understood that the systems had problems that day so she added the plan to my bill and corrected the charges. Never even had the error show up on my bill. Anyhow, the point is that when someone's bill starts racking up to a certain point or shows abnormal usage there should be a system in place that alerts the customer somehow like Rogers did for me. Not saying that there aren't other problems with Rogers, but in this case their customer service was obviously much better than what Pipestone is experiencing with Telus.

Agree 100%. These companies should be legislated into warning you when your bill hits a certain dollar value no matter what. It's incredibly easy to program something like that into the billing software. If you keep fighting I bet they'll relent because they know they'll take a PR hit if you go to the media. A lot of times just the threat of going to the media is enough to get them to cave.
