Good thing you don't tie your own flies otherwise you'd have multiple bins of material as well. I think the last time I checked I had a half dozen new spools of the same 6/0 black thread alone. Don't even ask about how many of the same colour rhea feathers I have at about $15 a pop. The worst thing I do is go into the shop, see something and think that I need it, then get home and realize I already have a brand new package of it in a drawer.

Just think of the iPhone as a really small laptop. Rushing water is explained by taking a quick break to walk the dog, though they normally don't hear it. You just have to let it go to voicemail, get out of the water, and call them back from the bank since you were "in the washroom" when they called. And when you're playing hooky like that you learn where the good fishing spots that still have a signal are. Man, you guys just aren't devious enough about avoiding work to fish while not getting fired. I've done a conference call from the banks of the Adams river and a press interview from the Bow in the last year.

Umm, last time I checked rainbow trout and steelhead are both oncorhynchus mykiss. The only real differentiator is that one is anadromous and the other isn't (guess which is which). Some steelhead smolt also remain resident, so even if some of the rainbows in the Bow are "steelhead" they aren't really because they never went to the ocean making the argument pretty useless.

Just remember they don't call it the fish of 1000 casts for nothing. Lots of guys get skunked their first trip for steel.

Are you using lighter test below the top fly? Could it be your knots? If you're using fluoro you really need to make sure to lubricate your knots well before you cinch them.

Use 10lb test and keep your stone as the top fly with less expensive flies at the bottom.

I'd suggest going out and picking up a copy of A Passion For Steelhead by Dec Hogan and Skeena River Fish and Their Habitat by Allen Gottesfeld and Ken Rabnett. The first one will answer the technique questions and the second will help answer where and when.

The number of licensed anglers in Alberta has been declining over the last several years according to Gord Kennedy. Any increase in anglers is perception and not reality. And since so many people complain about new Canadians not knowing the regs, something like this is a great idea to teach people.

A couple years ago I bought an Outbound Short to use as a single hand spey line on a 9'6" rod. It failed miserably. After talking to Simon Gawesworth about it last year he explained that the Short has a front-loaded taper which is inherently bad for spey casting. The reason being is that it's difficult for the rear of the line in your D-loop to move that heavy weight at the bottom and aerialize it properly. Go to the Rio site and compare the line profile of the Outbound Short to any of the actual spey lines and you'll see what I mean.

No reason you couldn't volunteer, bring your fly rod, and pass on the C&R ethic. This is a volunteer thing - they can't fire you if you go "off script". I'd volunteer myself and do this but I already have commitments that weekend.

Yeah, who does Sage think they are by following the model of every other industry to make money? Look at car makers. Every 5 years or so they release a new version of a model, usually with a "refresh" halfway through. Just be glad it isn't like the tech industry - a new iPhone or iPad every year...
