  1. I have a feeling people who don't tie flies don't look at the Fly Bench threads too often, so I thought I'd post here to get your attention. Jump over to Czech Nymph Poll and give us your opinion. Its one of the "other" two things everyone has. Please and thanks.
  2. Lead tape as per Oliver Edwards. I had to pick it up at the Golf Pro shop. I see they sell it at the Fishin Hole now, but they didn't last year. You're 100% right, Don, but its hard to see how heavily weighted a fly is if you use lead tape and sparse dubbing. At least I think mine was a Czech. It was with all the other Czechs I tied. Now you forced me to have to take my razor blade out and check. This one is a 100% Oliver Edwards pattern, so I know its heavily weighted/double wapped as per Essentials vid. I don't have to take a razor blade to this one.
  3. So that is what that is. I was wondering. Looks great. I assume they're trimmed? Maybe you can get one of those spring loaded coffee tables that pull up towards you to address that drunken back problem.
  4. Three or four patch's and two bumper stickers. (?) When it comes right down to it, I think I like Hawgstoppa's design the best. The primary reason why I want those two items is so we can identify each other on the stream and parking lot. That way, there may be less "surprises" when we come back from a day of fishing.
  5. This time, I'll leave the tube at home and take the toon. Tubes and breathables with ice still on the lake is not fun.
  6. Really nice tie, Barnes. Nice and neat with great proportions.
  7. Thanks, Dave. I'll let you know when I snag some brutes on those. I love that huge bolt on your vise jaws!
  8. Thats because they were all wondering where the global warming thread was going.
  9. Dave, I remember you posting a step-by-step for this fly. I'd love to see it again and tie some of these up myself.
  10. And about 2 hours after its release, there will be a million muslims demanding she be beheaded (you read it here first).
  11. Thats a great idea. Thanks for the closeup.
  12. Great site Don. Do you have any opinion on those Poor Man's Quads? I'm sure they aren't as good at a nice Hex, but for those of us who probably won't ever be able to afford one, are they a passable introduction to cane rods?
  13. That is one really fancy jig, Cdone. I built a similar one but didn't got with the fancy thread tensioners. It looks like you have some fancy rollers on your blank supports. Nice. (do you have a closeup?) I just cut a V into it. I tension my thread with some silicon washers against the spools with rubber washers outside of that. If you're going to build more then a couple of rods, your way is the way to go. Not too late for me to change my setup. Thanks for the great idea. ps. Whats the purpose of that rod thingie sticking out between the tensioners?
  14. Nice looking flies there, Tango. What I really like about this pattern is the eyes/feelers at the bend.
  15. Freaking Awesome. How could you go back to catching trout after an experience like that?
  16. That looks like a real sweet rod, Harry. I love the handle. I used to think I needed a fast action rod to get the distance but I'm slowly learning to appreciate slow action rods. You will have to let me take that baby for a spin one day.
  17. I have to apologize, but I can't remember what materials I used in this pattern. All I know is I tied it up when I was tying all my other Czechs. You can tell it has a scud back and I used mono for the rib, but I can't remember what I used for the body or the spikey thorax. I think its mink, but I'm not 100% sure. All I can guarantee is that I tied it as a Czech nymph (heavy).
  18. I have the book and I can tie up a couple more. Doesn't matter to me which. The expo is still a long way off. I'm waiting to see what goes and I'll pick up some of the others. If you have any suggestion/preference's, let me know. How many flies are you shooting for?
  19. This reminds me of one: What is the last thing they do to a Tickle Me Elmo before it leaves the factory.... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ...They give it two test tickles.......
  20. I was tying today and checked again. I take back what I say about shoulder height. Its actually nipple height. Sorry about posting bad advice.
  21. I'll be on the lookout for a tying description too. I don't know if they catch fish but they sure do look cool. I'll be watching this thread Latex Scud Thread
  22. Get a load of this scud pattern (and his other patterns). That Herman is a god. I'm not worthy.... Latex Scud
  23. Ya. If I saw someone doing that, I would riot in the streets.
  24. Great, lump free bodies and nice even rib wraps on the later fly. A rotary vise really helps with both of these. The top fly has better proportions (nice sparse wing and nicely shaped head). Remember, one of the the signatures of a well tied fly is the a small, neat head with lots of lacquer. The shinier the better. You aren't going to fish these flies, so you can lessing the # of wraps on the head. Good job.
  25. Nope. I suspect its too low. In the winter, I tie flies on my coffee table (pedestal vice) sitting on the couch, and if I do it for too long, my back gets tight. In the summer, I tie out in the garage standing up. I think the general goal is to have the fly at about shoulder level for the best comfort.
