  1. I don't know you well enough, Silver, to give you the full monty, so I'm only going to show you one boobie. Probably not as many as you think (well, maybe in Quebec), however, they do sell "boobie eyes" in the fly shops around here (that is what mine is tied with). So I imagine its not that obscure. But I think I can safely say not many people around here know the allure of a bouncing boobie. I like the looks of the bou over the eyes in yours. Never seen it adorned like that before. And your boobie is much more full and plump then mine. I'm going to have to "enhance" my pattern some more. Seriously though, more detail on how you fish them, please. My intermediate line sinks at 1.5 - 2in/second. I count down to get it to the depth I find the fish at. If I strip in fast, the line will pull up some and start rising. If I retrieve slow, it stays at that depth. Hand twist will allow it drop in the column even more. If you where fishing with that type of line, how would you fish the boobie?
  2. Ahhhhhh. Boooobies...... I have a few occupying my box and I've even caught a few fish with them. I have an intermediate sinking line but have never tried them on that. I will now. Thanks for showing me your boobies. (with a name like that, you gotta milk it for all its worth)
  3. Excellent write up, Silver. Very poetic. I can imagine myself there. Silver ink. Never heard it put like that before. The pictures back it up. The 4th one is especially appealing and it looks like quite a brute in the eight picture. I'm sure they all are, but that one gives it scale. All in one day (ish), eh? Not a week? Wicked. Thanks for posting pics of the flies. Nice ties.
  4. The reason the Canadian dollar is going through the roof is because its being measured against the American dollar, which is tanking due to the mortgage crisis (among other things). Almost every currency in the world is doing "very good" right now.
  5. You are a geologist and your wife is a teacher and you think its possible that some day you might be looking to mow lawns???? Man. I know fly fishing is expensive, but I never thought it was *that* expensive.
  6. "Can you dumb it down a little for me please. There may be 3 out of a thousand members that got that one" I'm still trying to figure out how every gas station in Calgary raises gas by 3.5c/lt all within 5 minutes of each other (I don't believe in ESP and collusion is against the law, so how do they do it? ) I, personally, welcome any change that will slow the growth of this economy to a manageable level while at the same time acknowledge who is selling their non-renewable resources to foreign companies/stock holders. Maybe putting the 2Bil in government coffers isn't the best solution, but its better then bonus cheques and stock options for oil exec's. Whichever results in a better trickle down to albertans in general, not just those in the energy industry. Will it result in a depression? I highly doubt it. I can't see demand for oil/gas trailing off anytime soon. They may pull out for a while, just to teach us a lesson, but they will come back on our terms, eventually. The oil and gas won't go anywhere if they aren't taking it.
  7. May Al Campbell rest in peace.
  8. Lonefisher. What the heck is your avatar? It looks like something I saw after eating some purple looking mushrooms I found on the side of a trail.
  9. I'm heading out to the Thompson River this weekend. Plan on floating from the outlet of Kamloops lake to Ashcroft. Has anyone done this before? I have questions. Thanks.
  10. Red is supposed to reduce the temporary blindness you experience after turning the light off. Don't know about the bug thing, but it makes sense.
  11. As I was reading this thread, I also thought two part epoxy (Doc beat me to it). I don't think it has to be flexible. The cork is glued to the blank with epoxy. It won't fracture. You are going to end up with a stiff spot that might feel weird in your hands, but you said you don't care about that. My only suggestion would be to not use 5min epoxy. Not enough working time. Use the 1hr type and wrap the fix in 1in strips of wax paper spiraled around it followed by cling wrap to hold it all together. If you are lucky, you won't have too much overflow over the outside of the cork handle. Epoxy is really hard to sand off without sanding the cork below it off. Then again, you don't have to sand it at all and just live with what you end up with. I'm sure you will be able to do a quick fix that would work. ps. while still wet, epoxy cleans up with rubbing alcohol. Use that to clean up any oozing before you secure it. disclainer: I've never tried this. The wax paper may stick to the epoxy. Try it at your own risk.
  12. Cool. Does anyone know if they sell tungsten wire wrap. Like sub. lead, but tungsten. Seems like you can get the same effect. I've used the tungsten sheets, but they are rubber like and the thread cuts into them like butter. Still, they also sink like rocks but if you're light on your initial wraps, you can get a nice taper.
  13. I don't factor in time because I love it. Some people say they don't have the time to tie. I call BS. We all have time. Its our choice what we do with it. Read a book, do home improvements, walk the dog, take pictures, earn brownie points or even go fishing (tough to do on a cold winter night). So, everyone has time to tie flies (mind you, some more then others). They just choose to do something else (because they don't really enjoy it). Their loss.
  14. I have only been into my backing a couple of time. Never, ever, been to the end of my backing. Wow. Damn. A sniff, but he didn't take.
  15. Didn't know Beaver liked Hoppers. Maybe it thought it was a stonefly.
  16. What a rush. It was your tippet that broke, not your rod or backing, right? 8wt - 5wt (designed to deliver fly line, not to fight fish). Shouldn't have made a difference. Can of worms.....opened.
  17. I must be between $2-3k. However, if I tallied all the flies I have (not counting the ones I fished, lost, gave away over the years) I have far more $ in flies then that (@ $2/fly) The best thing about rolling you own is you can twist up patterns you can't buy. That makes those flies priceless. Especially if you are catching fish on them when all those around you aren't.
  18. What is a tungsten hump? I've never heard of them. Jeremy has a pattern called the 1 Ton Weevil (think copper john with a tungsten beed). I tied a dozen and, as you say, they sink like a rock
  19. That picture isn't so clear. Send it to me and I'll tie you up a dozen or two.
  20. I backpacked the Great Divide from Shark (Canmore) to Robson and even I would not enjoy the trip you just described. I bet your rookie friend burned his boots when he got home. Still, when the blisters heal and the pain is just a memory (other then the life long recurring knee pain), it will be something he will remember all his life. Your story brought back some memories. Thanks for sharing.
  21. I kept a detailed accounting of BP one year (mostly on the BOW). I made a mental note of when the fishing turned on and when it turned off. At the end of the day, I checked this site to see what was happening during those times (wx.ca) and recorded it. I always found exceptions to previous observations. Sometimes the fishing was on when it was rising, others when it was dropping. Going over the whole year, I noticed a trend (but it still had some exceptions). My unscientific conclusion was it didn't matter if it was rising or falling. It had more to do with it being at or near 101. Like SJW, I call BS. Either way, if I can get out fishing, the BP isn't going to encourage me or stop me. I'm going fishing no matter where its at.
  22. Excellent vid. Quality stuff. You are really good at that. What software do you use? ps. I love the credits.
  23. I have to agree. Great proportions for a first fly. I expect to see great ties from you in the furture.
  24. I know some people (thankfully, not too many of them) who would say for one fish like that they would pay $60/day, drive 100km each way every day to register, give their right n*t and tow the SEK "its for the fish" party line while doing it. After seeing those pics, I might too!! Excellent report, MTB. Thanks for taking the time.
  25. Not since shortly after they stocked them. Good to hear some of them are still in there and growing.
