  1. Welcome guys, something to remember is that there is a wealth of information here. Read past posts and use the search to find lots of great advice.
  2. Have a happy one, may you have good times on productive waters.
  3. Good idea to tear into your boxes at least yearly. Taking everything out and restock allows you to re categorize the flies and get rid of ones that are not useful or bedraggled. Good time to give em the old stem treatment to perk em up.
  4. Small point, the Meiser is not based on the Deer Creek. It's the other way around. Bob Meiser was asked to design an inexpensive version of his rods for TFO. The Meiser and DC are not in the same class, quality or category. Looks like you made a great choice with the gloomis, heard a lot of great things about it.. you'll have a lot of fun with that rod, congratulations.
  5. There are some patterns that I whip out quickly but others that I spend more time on, traditional Catskill dries and Salmon and Steelhead flies can be much more time consuming. I take a certain pride and enjoyment in tying, be it a 5 minute fly or several hours. I enjoy tying which for me is a different category than fishing, often akin to meditation. We are all different and so have our own direction, which is good. But I do believe that after it leaves the bench, like Max said then it's all about casting and presentation. In the end we are, after all, presenting to a wily wild trout, not members of this board for its critical scrutiny. Have fun, experiment in tying and cast a line.
  6. I tie on a Nor_Vice most of the time but want to pick up something compact for traveling adn doing shows and clubs. I'll check it out.
  7. Absolutely stunning.
  8. Which Dyna King are you tying on these days Leroy. Always liked the look of that vice.
  9. Something I like to do is about three quarter through the swing drop back about a foot of line and jerk forward. Kind of like small hops. Learned this technique from my parents who loved wet fly fishing.
  10. His book Oliver Edwards' Flytyers Masterclass is a real joy.
  11. I havea Redington Red storm Jacket. Not the highest end one out there but it fit nicely into my budget. Lots of pockets and comfy.
  12. Easy Search the forum for for fly tying vices, there have been many posts with this question. do a bit of research. 1) Go to a good fly shop 2) let them pick out the vices in your price range 3) Try a couple and see which one you like. Enjoy tying, lots of good fices out there.
  13. Never noticed that on My Islander. Last fall my LX4 spent 3 days in the water and rain, sitting outside the cabin most days and taking many prolonged dips. It never gave me an ounce of trouble with some brutal salmon.
  14. Tie on before, just knot them in place then whip some tying thread around them. By the way this post should be moved to the fly tying area.
  15. I'm also in the "depends on the time of year and river" bunch. I actually have about 6 boxes filled with various flies for not only rivers and lakes but also different provinces and species (Steelhead and different trout) some loaded in separate vests. I normally carry 1 to 3 boxes (wets & nymphs dries and streamers). Also have boxes that key on season. Talk about anal.
  16. I might be wrong but its a way too big a book for spiral binding. Pretty massive book.
  17. I agree spring pike are a real rush.
  18. Beauty fish, thanks for posting. Darn I have to wait till fall.
