  1. The German strain of Brown trout, S. Fario, are small trout (17" would be a Trophy) and the Loch Leven strain, S. Levenensis are very large. There may have been hatchery cross breeding of the two, but it's unlikely. The Bow is known for its original stocking of Loch Leven Browns, but I have not heard of any of the S. Fario ever being introduced. That said, there was a hatchery started/operated by the Calgary Brewing and Malting company, from (1960-1973) and later jointly run with the Province untill the Sam Livingstone Hatchery was started in 1973. I had heard it was located at what is now known as Southland. (edited) Still looking into it...
  2. No problem....Spey casting is all about line control.

Great report adc and what a great fishing adventure... Thanks for posting.
  5. It's still happening... some people will toss Pike into the bushes that they caught on the Bow, because they eat the trout. I think that is BS, as Pike are a natural part of the river system.

  14. Yeah, I guess we're done givin' Todd and Mike a hard time...but, with the comments made at the end of the video, they deserved a bit of flame...
  15. I shoot first....
  16. Thing is, in their video, the trout gets dragged up the bank, covered in snow and is posed in front of the camera for a full minute before they decide to release it. Then, I wonder what kind of release was possible from up on the bank. Likely, it was simply chucked back in. In my view, the manner in which this fish was handled, could constitute it as a kept fish, over the legal size limit, as the chance of recovery was reduced after that experience. If this was a flyfisherman's video...there'd be a hangin'...
  17. ADC will be returning from holidays tommorow and will inform me of all payments received. I'll get those flies off to you tommorow, Tako. It's almost closing time folks (March 15th) and we still have a few items to sell off.

    Sink Tip

I'd recommend looking at the SA floating Compact shooting heads, for single handers. Then just add 5' or 10' Airflow polyleaders (12lb. core), available in floating, Intermediate, Type 3, Type 6, to the SA head. Factory loops make it easy to quickly adapt to all conditions. This system casts/fishes very well. Trying to cast T-8, which is 8 grains/foot, with a standard 7wt. fly line that weights 7 grains/foot, is not going to work very well. It takes mass to turn over mass, so the mass of the fly line must be greater than the mass of the leader/tippets/flys that follow. Compact shooting heads, condense the mass of a 30' head into a 23' head. So, a 7wt. Shooting head would weight around 210 grains @ 23', which is 9 grains/foot. Adequate for T-8 and no problem for T-6.
  21. That's good science, Don...
  22. Well done Weedy...There's the facts, folks. So, who's gonna call it in? Anyone? Maybe we should get rickr to do it...grin.
  23. Well, if anyone feels that these video's depict someone not handling fish properly, as defined in the Alberta Sportfishing Regulations, then call RAP or F&W and file a formal complaint. Send them the link to the sites homepage and ask them to take a look. Link: http://www.bowriverblog.com/ A couple of points worth considering..... From the Alberta Sportfishing Regulations... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alberta Angling Ethic In accordance with the Fish and Wildlife Policy, the Alberta Government promotes the following angling ethics. The ethical fisherman has respect for wild creatures, knowledge of his natural surroundings, a sense of fair play and consideration for the rights and expectations of others. Fishing, as promoted by the Alberta government, should foster an ethical relationship of the highest order between the angler, his quarry, his fellow anglers, and the natural environment. Ethical conduct is expected of anglers in Alberta. 2. Provide proper care and handling of caught or released fish. Fish are to be released with the greatest possible care and minimal amount of handling. Fish that are kept should be killed quickly once they are out of the water and in such a manner that their edible or trophy value is preserved. 8. Anglers have a duty to address illegal activities in a safe manner. Angler’s actions could range from alerting others to closed waters or wrong size or species being kept to reporting all observed violations of angling regulations to the Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division. It is important to collect pertinent information (such as vehicle licence numbers, violator descriptions, etc.) that will assist enforcement actions. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fish and Wildlife Division Alberta Sustainable Resource Development Great West Life Building, 9920 108 Street Edmonton, Alberta T5K 2M4 Email: Fish.Guide@gov.ab.ca
