  1. Entertaining replies but not what I meant. Here's a link of what I mean... http://www.ginkandgasoline.com/fly-fishing-gear/10-inexpensive-fly-fishing-life-hacks-from-the-home-depot/
  2. After building my own fly rod holder for the truck, I'm curious to see what others have hacked together. Post some pics! http://flyfishcalgary.com/board/index.php?showtopic=22022
  3. Love my 3 Tand bought from IronBow. Solid reel for the price.
  4. $20 in materials and this is what I came up with. I needed it to work with the tonneau cover down and have quick/easy access to the rods.
  5. My intentions are to keep the rod fully intact when jumping from hole to hole down the ftr @ 50kmh. I don't have a rear window but I do have a tonneau cover. If the tonneau cover was metal I'd do this... Some good suggestions, but I'm gonna get crafty I think.
  6. Does anybody know if they make a fly rod holder for a truck bed? I know they make mounts for the hood and roof of your vehicle which would work I guess, but do they make something specific for the back of pickup? They're also pretty pricey. I thought about hacking something together with magnets and pvc tubes. Thoughts? ... and go...
  7. Thanks for the info Feather... Will golf courses let you fish their ponds? I imagine you'll have to ask for permission. We'll be golfing Mission Hills and Indian Wells and PGA West. How does one figure out which ponds have fish? Sorry for all the questions.
  8. I'll be in Palm Springs golfing next week, and yes I know it's a desert, but is there any fishing around the area?
  9. I don't ever want to encounter a "big cat"!
  10. Will you be at Dutch next week, Monday to Wednesday? I plan on camping there those days and fishing the OM and Livingston as much as I can. Maybe fish a run together as I'll be solo?
  11. Gonna camp around that area during the week and wanted to let friends know where I am if they decide to come and fish for the day. Or anywhere on 40? Thanks.
  12. Depending on the speed and depth of water I'm on, I like using either a sink tip or an intermediate line for wets and streamers. I find it easier to cast a weighted line vs. dealing with split shot.
  13. That sucks balls!!! Don't know if you tie flies, but if you need a certain pattern(s), I can whip some up for you. I'm sure there are others on this site that will do the same. Let me know.
  14. I too was wet wading this weekend. Well at least my left leg was. My right leg was dry. I hate it when you discover a hole in your waders when the car (with duct tape) is 1km away. I had a productive weekend with dry flies. I only resort to nymphin' when nothing is clearly rising and only after prospecting with a dry. Cuttys, I find are not as selective in what they go for. Either a flashy red or orange fly is usually the ticket when they're rising. An orange foam rubber legged stimulator pattern was killin' it for me. Also had luck with a Royal Wulff style dry fly.
  15. I will need to spend $$ on guitar lessons then. Will I be able to serenade fish to my net with that guitar?
  16. Stonefly Nymph... There are always Stones in the Bow.
  17. I went through this dilemma myself. My first rod was a $250 TFO BVK and wondered if there was any difference between it and a higher end rod. So I bought a $700 Hardy Zenith. The Zenith is a pretty sick stick but after awhile I realized it's not the rod that makes it sweet. I was on the water, all proud with my recent purchase that I realized, I better look like I know what I'm doing with a $700 rod. I wasn't a novice in fly fishing, nor was I advanced. I was somewhere in the middle. While swinging the Zenith, I was more aware of my casting stroke and after awhile my overall casting technique got better. After sometime, I went back to using my BVK for some nymphing and realized it was easier to work with since the last time I picked it up. LIGHT BULB goes off!!! It was me, not the rod. So the moral of my story is, work with what you got and if you feel you've maxed it out, then think about buying a rod that better suites the type of fishing you want to do. If you feel that you need to work in closer range like on a small creek, buy a shorter, lighter, more flexible rod over lined in weight. If you want to chuck big a$$ streamers, go heavier with a bigger stick like the Sage 99 (I have a 6wt Sage 99 and use it strictly on the Bow for nymhphing and streamers... love it). I feel that good technique is more important than the equipment you have. I know there are a few here that would agree. I don't think I'll ever buy another $700+ rod again. With saying that... look at Greys. They have some sweet mid ranged rods that are half the price of the Hardy's, GLoomis, Winstons, etc. As for reels, again depends what your fishing for. Larger fish, you'll need a good drag system and large arbor. Smaller fish, very rarely you'll need drag and doubtful it will ever put you into your backing. 18. Ummm... I don't cast that far at night so not sure how those would help me fishing.
  19. Already have a pontoon net and a smaller for rivers and creeks. hmm... didn't think it was this challenging. How about something like this...? http://www.abelreels.com/store/Abel-Pliers.html
  20. That's the thing. I really don't need any fly fishing gear. I have two inflatables, a quiver full of rods and reels to match. It's one of those questions, "what do you get a guy (as in myself) that has everything (fly fishing ie.) that he needs?".
