  1. if you can find a set of these , they are well worth the money. I love mine and the propel me along effortlessly in my Fishcat, as well as in my pontoon. And unlike fins when you flip them up getting in and out of the water is easy. Colin
  2. Ok, how about this then. "C'mon man its for your wife, doesn't she deserve 'New'? don't be so cheap, sheesh only $800?, Think of how many rods you could ship to the US for that" Sorry had too
  3. I thought the shop you bought a rod at would help you out with warranty issues, isn't that the reason everyone pushes buy local?
  4. My brother was in the Armed Forces, used to get me "bug dope", stuff would eat through plastic but boy did it ever keep the bugs away. I always try to find the highest amount of Deet, I think Muskol is it at the moment. Colin
  5. Only downfall of a small gas motor is that it can't be used on 'electric motor only' lakes (not sure how many there are in AB but lots in BC). Electric motor with a Costco Group 27 battery works great on a pontoon, move your seat forward to balance out the weight distribution, have done it that way for years. Other options out there are wheelchair batteries (shorter life span between charges, but 1/2 the price and weight of a group 27 so technically you could buy 2 and keep a spare on shore) , or Lithium Ion batteries (very pricey $600 for the Torqueedo but small) Colin
  6. Brent, yes it may have sucked but its a fairly visible stretch of river, what about the areas less visible and more productive i.e. Llama Farm? Thanks troutfriend, at least there is talk about riparian restoration, that's a start. And I do agree that a lot of these funds should/could be used to buy out residents on the flood plains. Colin
  7. Troutfriend, do you know if there are any provisions for creation of fish habitat for all of the 'on bank mitigation' projects currently underway? That kilometer long rock wall they are creating under the cliff face below Diamond Cove looks like it will be a featureless dead zone as do many off the others being built. Colin
  8. If you're gonna go with charcoal, do yourself a favour a get one of these Best investment you can make with charcoal, I can usually get my coals ready in 15 min (about the same amount of time I would let my gas BBQ warm up) Colin
  9. How big (thickness) is the meat? That will tell you how long to smoke for. Fibres in the shank are pretty big so you don't need a long smoke like you would with brisket (18 to 20 hours), I would rub them well, let them sit for 24 hours at least to start breaking down some of the connective tissue and the smoke in a 170 to 200 degree F. smoker for 6 to 8 hours to get an internal temp of 210 degrees F. You might find that you have to do a little trial and error with timing depending on your smoker and such. Colin
  10. Hi all, Nile Creek Fly Shop/ Ogilvie Outfitters is looking for an extra set of hands or two, to help out with set-up (Thursday noon til 6pm) and tear down (Sunday 5pm til 8pm). Unfortunately Courtney has buggered his knees and is forced to take it somewhat easy this year. PM me if you are able to help. Thanks Colin
  11. I'd do it but I have a feeling the Ogilvie Outfitters booth will be as busy as last year.
  12. Your looking for EVA or Hypalon, haven't seen it at Fishtales, most builders use rubberized cork instead. If you are set on foam, try to find Yoga blocks in the colour you want, they should be dense enough to turn. Colin
  13. There are folks that fish a 7wt exclusively in that region and do well, an 8 wt would be a good compromise if you are only targeting Steelhead and the smaller salmon species, if you want to chase steelhead and the big boys (springs) then a 9wt would probably be a good idea. With the Expo coming up at the end of January there will be plenty of Spey rods and lines to try out. Colin
  14. I rarely use hackle, most of the time I'll dub in a collar of dubbing (colour of your choice) and then brush it out a bit, same effect and much more variety of colours. Colin
  15. I really enjoyed fishing the 9' 5wt Snowbee Geo nano rod this summer, matched with the Geo reel it was a really nice set up. Light in hand, plenty of power/backbone, and super accurate. Great for the Upper Oldman area. I grabbed this as a demo rod from the shop thinking I'd get more time on the Bow than I did, ended up fishing small streams all summer but still really enjoyed the combo. I know Courtney was fishing pinks off the beach with it matched up with a 300gr switch line so more than enough power for most situations we'd run into here. I do have it here as a demo rod if anyone wants to give it a try. Colin
  16. I hate to say it, but I actually thought it was the same fish in all 3 videos, and the first thing that came to mind was ' why are they torturing this poor fish?' it wasn't until I re-watched them that it started to make sense and it was 3 separate fish. I think if anything perhaps a little more explanation leading up to the video's would help. its certainly a tough call when posting anything to the web. Colin
  17. Saw this over on the BC board, might make a nice boat for someone. http://forum.flybc.ca/index.php?showtopic=45482 Colin
  18. Shorten the tail on the fly especially if you're using a rabbit strip fly, bloody pike will hold on for a long time and then just let go. I use 1/0's and 2/0's for most of my 'hammer handle' flies. bigger hook should allow for a better hook-up I would think. Colin
  19. This I've had customers request them on rods as small as 3wts. Would it be better if we called the 'extension' butts instead of 'fighting' butts? Colin
  20. both Waddingtons and Mustad Saltwater hooks with the bend cut off.
  21. These.
  22. Got one, thanks everyone. Colin
  23. Hi Folks, I know its short notice, but we are looking to borrow a mitre saw to use in the construction of the Nile Creek Fly Shop booth at Spruce Meadows on Thursday. can anyone help us out? thanks Colin
  24. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the show. Looks like we're gonna be busy!! Colin
  25. Lots of info about the competitions, FIPS Mouche rules, competitor and volunteer sign up sheets here http://www.flyfishingcanada.net/ . As well we will have a booth set up at the WCFF expo, there will be sign up sheets there as well. Colin
