Ladies and Gents Is anyone able to advise on the status of Springbrook? I recently tried their site, with the idea of shopping for some discounted gear for Christmas. Best wishes for your new arrival. The fishing will always be there. If you live to be 80 and your children are with you for 20 years, that's only 1/4 of your life. The days may seem to last forever, but the years will flash by. Bar none, sharing a child with my wife is the coolest thing I've ever done. Daughter or Son - it will be like watching your heart walk around outside your body.

Mrs Wulff is Truly Great. I saw a brief clip of her casting at some show in 2011... aged 84. She casts better than 95% of the fly fishers I've ever seen. Like the master caster she is, she could instruct wonderfully too. I've learned so much from her.

I can't use my prescription glasses or sunglasses in polarized mode because the polarization interferes with screens I must look at whilst at the controls of aircraft. My solution is to use my regular prescription glasses (bi-focal) with those overglassess which are polarized. I use them for fishing and I use them whilst riding my motorbike as well. They are quite effective, though they may look a little larger than some glassess. Perhaps not the height of fashion, but very effective and convenient. Not too expensive either. I bought "Cocoon" brand - the Pilot model and I have to say I like them a lot. I recently looked for another pair at Wholesale Sports in YYC but they only had a small size left. Good luck.

Have a pair of Simms rubber sole with studs and an old pair of Hodgman felts. Used felst most of my life and for some reason I still like them the most.

I've had a USA transit starting from Calgary (YYC) and my flies where in my unlocked (by US reg) checked hard case. On arrival at destination after the connection in SanFrancisco (SFO), all the flies in two seperate boxes were dumped/and shaken out of the foam backing in to the suitcase. Nice.

I may have already made this statement somewhere on the forum, but when I tested my expired can on the driveway, holding it down and out, and downwind, and gave a short 1.5 - 2 second shot, the back spray incapacitated me. I wasn't totally helpless but damn near. I have serious doubts as to the efficacy of this stuff. I still carry because it's pretty much all a gent can carry these days... I reckon my best defense lies in the fact that if the bear starts chasin' me, it'll never be able to catch me because he'll be slipping in $#it!

Jet boat collision on the Bow River Posted 2 days ago CANMORE - Canmore RCMP have charged a 52-year-old Calgary man with refusal to provide a breath sample following a jet boat collision on the Bow River on Wednesday, June 13. The incident happened around 8:20 p.m. when the boat struck an island. A 45-year-old female passenger suffered minor injuries and was transported to hospital. Police believe this to be an alcohol-related incident. The Calgary man is to appear in Canmore Provincial Court later this month. Canmore Leader

I fished the Cowichan nearly 40 years ago with my father - and many other fine waters on The Island. Of course, times change but when I read stories like this I am happier than ever as to why I like living in Alberta so much. An interesting original post, and I must concur. Some of these smaller outfits put their pilots under tremendous pressure to fly. Pushing the regulatory limits and poor pilot judgement, combined with low pilot experience and sometimes less than ideal pilot ability and airmanship... well, it all adds up to a recipe for disaster. Throw in some bad weather or other environmental conditions and ...well you get the idea. I've been flying professionally for a while. Flying aircraft is inherently risky. For the paying public trying to make a wise choice as to which carrier, or outfit, you use is fraught with difficulty. As a consumer you're a blindfolded tap-dancer in a mine-field. Mr Jensen's advice is sound. On the flight deck our mantra with managment, who always want to pay us less and get us to do more is: "if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys". In the charming film of the classic Tom Wolfe novel "The Right Stuff" it's put even more succinctly: "No bucks, ($$$), no Buck Rogers". It's that simple and that complicated. Suffice to say it's a very, very complicated issue. In the end, we place a lot of faith in the regulatory authority: Transport Canada, and their designated personnel who license the pilots and the engineers. If they support the strict adherence to high standards, that will help. The owners and business types who run some of the smaller outfits are under their own form of commercial pressure. Aircraft and their overheads are expensive. The machines don't earn income when they're parked on the ramp. But good character and sound, cautious judgement must prevail. This is what sorts the men out from the boys; and the survivors from those that are less fortunate. After any serious incident, or accident, there's lots of blame dodging, on all sides. The true pros go the other way and gnaw away at the facts until they've gleaned the important lessons and identified the individual links in the chain of disaster. In order that this mishap pilot's death not remain senseless, we owe it to him and his people to not speculate on cause and wait instead for the outcome of the investigation by the proper authorities. Hopefully the hard lessons learned will be shared amongst those who have the most to gain: other pilots. The Transport Canada publication for general aviation and professional aviation has a nice quote to this effect: Learn from the mistakes of others; you'll not live long enough to make them all yourself... I find myself praying, agnosticism be damned, for the safe deliverance of the soul of that young helicopter pilot. RIP.

Fly fishing, both salt and freshwater in Kenya has been a well known fact for years. Lots of highland streams stocked with browns and 'bows. Nice little hangover from Colonial times. Haven't been to the salt yet - but there's lots of marlin fishing out of Mombassa and there's a big trench off the coast that permits some big fish to be taken.

The fish don't interfere with my mating habits - why should I interfere with theirs?

I have had this happen fishing the open ocean as well. I lost a Dorado (Mahi Mahi) which broke my hook off after a jump. About 20 minutes later, I caught and landed the same fish, with my #2 in the corner of his mouth. He was a good sized 12 kg buck. Delicious too! These coincidences are kind of amazing.

I fished Mt. Lorrette Ponds in K-Country, just to get on the water since everything is so high and vis so poor. Anyway, it had been recently stocked with nice Rainbows and I dusted off the bamboo rod and caught a couple on 20 June. I went back with the family about 8 days later, after the weekend of 25/26 June the ponds were empty! Not a single fish visible! Jeepers... I drove the FTR recently and BT and Ft looked pretty good. Didn't have time to cast a line though. Upper Red Deer was clearing as of early July. Vis about 5-6 feet. A few Bull Trout around. One caught by a member of our group and two LDRs. tight lines
