  1. HAH.... good one. I laughed out loud. Hey nice to hear from you Robert. It has been a while. I actually lost my phone in the river without backing it up and lost all of my contacts. Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions. I've been bombarded with PM's from people inviting me and Stacey (girlfriend) out for walk and wades and floats. Thanks guys, what a great community. I appreciate all of the feedback immensely. She either will enjoy the sport for what it is, or not and its not for her. It's just been great to enjoy a passion for something with someone you care for. Thanks again guys and gals. Rob, lets get out sometime soon, I'll send you a PM.
  2. Hello everyone. My names Matt. This is my third summer fly fishing the bow. Actually third year fly fishing at all. After three years I've learned a lot from this site, from youtube, friends off the site and from random people i meet on the river every weekend. Allthough im certain i have so much to learn about fly fishing as a hobby and an art, i feel i have the general idea of the sport. I met a girl who grew up near lakes and boats and loves fishing. She is more than willing to learn how to fly fish. She's bought her first fly rod, ( a 5wt tfo) and is waiting until next paycheck to buy waders. I've taken her out probably a dozen times so far. I think in total I've proably caught 3 fish trying to show her the ropes. I'm terrified she will get bored with the lack of action. Obviously i am not the best teacher. Not sure what im doing wrong. Dont get me wrong, the past few years I've had my days. 6-8 fish to net within 4 hours. But more often than not i seem to get skunked. I am certainly not lazy, as ive hiked as much as 9km one way to find the part of the river that is "untouched" by the public. Always wanting to find the honey pot nobody else knows about. Its more than disapointing to walk for more than an hour to get to "your" spot only to find 3 other people wading in the hole. Its frustrating. I have read posts from some of the other members here, catching 3-18 fish per outing. Some seem to do a lot better than others. ... Not sure if thats the full truth or just good fish stories. I am trying my very best to not turn her off of the sport. She hasnt had the chance to hook into a single fish yet. I want to show her how great it can be to set into a 26" brown and hear that whirrrrrr we all love. Shes more than willing to learn, but not being experienced enough myself, im looking for a mentor to show her (us) the ropes. Perhaps the best solution is to rent a guide for the day? I'm looking for any tips or help that i can get. Maybe a guided float is the answer, or a guided walk and wade to keep her interest tweaked.... I need some help. Thanks in advance. - Matt
  3. 07 silverado. For sale...........
  4. Anything you buy for 3-500 will be bogged down with so much crap.. HP, ASUS..whatever you get will have software installed that you really dont need and will slow it down A LOT. My suggestion is to buy a 500$ laptop, reformat it and install only the vital drivers. I have done this for many clients and they run like a top. PM me if you need help.
  5. Please don't ask me how because I'm still pretty mad at myself for doing it, but I managed to break a Tfo 5wt 4 piece rod in two different places. The third piece closest to the tip and also the part with the cork handle and butt. Is that covered in warranty? Will they charge me the 30$ charge or 60$? What a great way to start a vacation. TIA
  6. Thoughts and prayers to everyone involved.
  7. It is a TFO! I will try that next time.... Allright robert im down any night of the week. Send me a text, i get off work at 5.
  8. Hahaha.. Yes it was an experience I will never forget. I did have my belt done up, which I think saved me a little bit. Still was absolutely soaked. I didnt just take a nice little dip, it was a full speed face plant in about 4 feet of water. And yes that was one of the many thoughts running through my head on the way back to my rod, "coulda used a big foam fly..idiot" Haha, live and learn I only wish someone was there to howl in laughter at me to bring my rage level down at the time.
  9. Well well. 25 above, works all done, no girlfriend or kids to worry about. What is a man to do? Fish the bow. Tonight i experienced three firsts in my short fly fishing career. #1 Lost 8 brand new hooks in a two hour span..... #2 seven fish to net in a two hour span.... 10-12 hooked #3 Went for a nice swim in the bow river with waders on Stoped at fish tales on my way to the river this afternoon. Only to find Dave and a few others getting all geared up and pretty excited to hit the river. Picked up some pretty golden stone flys and a few black stoneflys for good measure. With everyone in the shop being so excited, and the guy behind the till being so exsaughsted from all the fishing hes been doing, i knew this was a good time to be on the river. I was excited. I pulled up in the parking lot around 5pm, unpacked my gear, clipped off my old tapered leader I have had on for probably a few months now, tied on a brand new one, and began to set up. Only one indicator left, hmm, should be allright with just one tonight. Golden stone fly for the lead fly, and .... a "secret" fly on for the second. Got my waders on and i was heading down to the river. Passing a few other fishermen, baitcasters and fly fisherman, i asked "any luck today?" All replied "Nothing yet!!" I started to wonder if the river would be as good as i had hoped. Got to my favorite location, to find it completely vacant to my suprise. There was a bait caster probably 150-200m downstream of me, but far enough away from "my" spot i wasnt going to bother him. I put my backpack down on the shore, and started off with a few short casts close to the bank. Nothing.. Went deeper and deeper into the pool, and within 5 casts...WHAM..fish on. Beaut rainbow. Put up a heluva fight. Not a very clean release as he rolled in my net, getting his gills caught in my line. Hope he was ok. Five minutes later.....another rainbow, this one putting on an acrobatic display like no other I have seen before.. Again.. Sloppy release. Line wrapped around gills and mouth... Both seemed to swim off decently though. Still, felt bad. Seeing all the action within the ten minutes i had been there, the bait fisherman packed up and left discusted. Couldnt help but smirk a tiny bit. Next cast,,, snag.. tried to free it by walking upstream and gently yanking. Snap. There goes two new hooks...Tie on another two and back at er..Snag....Snap.....FFS.................Another two flies, catch a rainbow, clean release.......cast........snag.................Snap..........FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUU UUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!............Another two NEW hooks.....SNAG............SNAP...........THERE GOES MY ONLY INDICATOR.......floating down the middle of the bow... Allright, enough of this BS. Thank goodness i had the sense of mind to take my iphone out of my wader front pocket... Chucked it on top of my bag while running down the bank...The 3$ indicator was floating in a nice calm peice of water..."You're mine now" i thought. Ran out into the river full speed ahead with my net in hand, ready to net my beloved last indy. Toe hit a giant rock, tried to counter the trip but to no avail. Down i go, face first into the river, with water rushing down my waders. COLD.... Got up, wiped my face, looked in my net to discover at least i manged to rescue my indicator. .. Moped all the way back to my rod and tied on another two new hooks... Got a few casts out, somehow ended up with a weird knot in my flyline, Put my rod on the bank and was trying to untangle it when suddenly i felt brownzilla ripping on my line... I managed to set the hook, pull him in and release him all without my rod..What a gorgeous 20+" brown... That made me chuckle a lil bit. All and all it was the most fun / frustrating outing i have ever experienced. I know that .....but i just wanted to share the most bizare night i have ever had fishing. I ended up ripping up a cardboard box and sitting on it the entire way home as to not soak my truck seats with bow water. Walked into the beer store with no shoes on and soaked pants and shirt, got some funny looks but nobody asked. Gotta love Calgary. Thanks for reading PS.... ALL of the fish were caught on my "secret" fly Not one took the stonefly.
  10. I was wondering if you had got a new rod today or not Robert lol. Probably i am a little bit responsible for that in all te excitement....Tried out the new nymphing techniques today, tied into a really nice rainbow. Also got flashed by a drunk chick in a tube. Awesome day!!!!!!
  11. If you cant save it, try a screenshot of it. Paste it in paint, crop it, save it as........... PM me if you need help!

    Mustad

Okay great, thanks for the replies. So would you recommend use an actual nymph hook to tie nymphs? Im not sure why the guy i was talking to told me to pick up the dry hooks, even for nymphs. Maybe it was just his preference.
  14. Only one way to tell..... let us know!
  15. Too bad about the fish...but glad to hear you got over there and confronted them. I also hope they get what is coming to them. Good job

its actually a size 14, my mistake. Its a R50 DRY. Which i was informed was a better hook even for nymphing.

    Mustad

Tied up my first flys ever this morning, some not so pretty, others not too bad actually. Tied up a BH bloodworm on a size 16 mustad, tried it out on the river today and WHAM something took it HARD. I had a bunch of line out, so i was slowly trying to let it out and get the fish on my reel, it was pulling VERY hard. Now i wasn't pulling too too hard but i was keeping tension and keeping my rod tip high, when the hook came out and the fish got off. Brought in my setup to inspect my hooks, and saw that the bloodworm i tied actually had him, until he straightened the hook out.. :$*%&: Just wondering if anyone has had problems with mustad hooks straightening out or if this was user error. Should i buy better quality hooks? Thanks in advance.
  18. I know what you mean Rick. I've had a "secret" hole Ive gone to near Sundre since I was about 10 years old. Changed a lot since then but basically its the same. Need a 4x4 and some luck to get there without getting stuck. I usually go there 3-4 times a season and have awesome luck everytime I go. Went two seasons ago to find someone had been camping near the area and left ALL of their garbage behind. I threw it all in the back of my truck and fished for a few hours, catching a few. The next time I went there the road/path had been repaired and there were 3 othere vehicles parked when I arrived. All fishing in or around "my" area. I went back once last year to find more garbage and people there again so im sure its a well known area by now. Secret spots cant remain secrets forever, but you will always have the memorys when it used to be "yours." Like you said time to move on and find the next one!

    Starting Out

Thanks guys! Never tried the search, crossed my mind but then i thought aw well whats a forum for anyways. Sounds like i am going to forget the kit idea, thanks for all the responses. How addicting can it be???
  21. Hey guys. Really interested in starting tying. Never once tried before. Funds are a little tight right now, im considering purchasing the 75$ starter kit at basspro. Start out cheap and small and gradually upgrade my tools as i progress in skill. Any thoughts on the kit? Worth my 75$ or would i be better waiting untill i had the money to buy quality. Thanks!
