  1. As it is nearing Xmas gift time I am thinking of tieing up some flies for a shadow box kinda thing for my dad. Do you guys have any suggestions on what kind of flies I should tie for it? I want something fairly attractive and neat looking like a stimulator pattern or a big hopper pattern like a club sandwich. I think tying a tiny BWO or an odd looking nymph might not be the best way to go. I have looked on the net and a lot have rediculously large pike or bass patterns, also classic streamers like the ones SJW ties seem to be popular but I don't know how to tie them! Thanks guys!
  2. First off that is awesome that so many people have the Sharp Aquos LCD's. I have a 37" Aquos and I love it. I bought a cheap HDMI cable to connect up my PS3 to watch Blu Ray and it seems to work pretty well and it is really sharp. That being said I have never compared it to a high end cable so it's hard to tell if you are getting the best picture possible without buying a high end cable.
  3. That is the weir haha The river is so high right now that you can't even tell it is there. The fences are to keep people out and there are signs about the "Drowning Machine" and all that. It is about a km down the river from the lake. Not sure why the river is so high right now though. I'll post some pics of it on monday.
  4. Beauty colours on that pike! How big was that guy?
  5. Hey guys! Haven't posted in awhile as I moved up to Slave Lake to work at the college. Not much for fly fishing up here, plus it has been really raining so all the streams and lakes have raised up quite high. I went out walleye fishing with a guy and we have had pretty good luck out on the lake trolling. There is a weir coming off the Lesser Slave River and there is a little stretch that is a popular fishing spot. I have been out there twice now, no luck the first time and I just got back in from a great outing today. There was a bunch of older guys who said they had never seen someone fly fish for jackfish before lol I caught one little guy, hooray first pike on a fly in Slave Lake!!, but he chowed down on the whole fly and it took a bit to get it out of him. Second one hit like a jackhammer and took me a little while to get him in. Great fun!! Pike in rivers seem to have a lot more spunk than pike in lakes that's for sure!! Got some pics of the gators for you guys! First is the little guy, still almost to big for my trout net! haha Second is the big guy on the bank probably around 3 or 4 pounds, it was the biggest pike I had ever gotten on my fly rod. The third pic is me holding the pike up, some of the older guys there wanted it for eating so I gave it to them lol Caught both pike on some ugly hairy bunny bug/clouser minnow flashy thingy. I have been reading the forum a lot lately and I really need to go stream fishin for some rainbows!! I dream of the crowsnest pass!!
  6. I just bought some Hodgeman Wadelite wading boots that were on sale for my trip out to the Crow on Friday and they worked great. I was wet wading and had a neoprene sock on to keep my foot warm. I just had old hiking boots before I got those and I bet I woulda been swimming if I hadn't of got those new boots. Is the bow warm enough to wet wade now?
  7. Thanks a lot much appreciated. I have to go in to Okotoks now in the morning to drop off my gf I was thinking coming back on the 22X and it looks like there is a little road leading to the river by the golf course. Then I can just drive down the 22X further till I hit the 24 then turn down towards Carseland. That could be a good day
  8. Excellent. Is there any maps of the area that show the trails leading to the water? Edit: I looked at Google Earth and Google Maps and found the weir. Are you allowed to fish in the zoo? On the Google Map there is a park called the "Bow River Park" right by the Crowchild Trail NW Bridge. Looks like there is some parking there. Would that be a good place to start and walk upstream? Thanks guys :)
  9. Seems pretty cheap to get stuff shipped by ground. Here is the pricing chart for sending to Canada scroll down a bit. Cabelas Shipping
  10. I found this pattern that looks like it would do pretty well. Looks easy to tie to. Alberta Stone
  11. I will be coming up to Strathmore on Thursday night and would like to go fishing in Calgary on Friday. Where would be an easy place to drive to as I have an old car that can't handle to much. Is it worth trying in town or am I better off staying out of town. Strathmore is right by the Carseland Weir is there any good fishing around there? Anybody wanting to meet up and go for a walk and wade maybe?
  12. Haha I don't know if I want to cut my line but sounds like a good plan! The worst part about that was I was fishing and Paul was watching and he asked if he could have a go so I gave him my rod exactly like I was using it and he went on and cast out the whole line! Next time I am out I am going to work on speedy hauls timed perfectly
  13. Is this the area below the dam? I am guessing Boulder Run is right below the dam and then is Cottonwood the park just down the river? I went there early season when it was still cold and it looked like a pretty decent campground.
  14. I go on Sexyloops all the time and read lots of the forum posts and it's pretty helpful. I was in wholesale yesterday and saw "Fly Casting with Joan Wulff" and it seemed pretty good. Anyone read that one?
  15. Clive is a great guy! I was just getting into fly fishing and was interested in pike and Clive gave me all the info on them and even gave me some of his pike flies. Which work great by the way Thanks Clive!!
  16. I recently had a casting lesson with Paul Arden who has some UK distance records and he got me all excited about distance casting. Now I know that it isn't really that useful in regular fishing but I want to learn to toss my whole line or close to it. I have Cortland Lazer line and it says 35 yards which is like 105 feet. Anyway I have been out practising on the lawn and I can cast about 75 feet. I can't seem to get it any further and I end up trying to power it out there which ends up in a crappy cast or tailing loops. I know people say less power is better but when I try that my backcast doesn't seem to stay up in the air very well. How hard are you guys hauling on your front cast to get it back straight behind you? Also when you are doing your double haul do you let your hand travel back to your chest or all the way back up to your casting hand? Do you have any tips on distance casting? Thanks guys!!!
  17. If you select Alberta is brings up a big list of lakes, river, reservoirs etc and you can check out the current water levels. Might be interesting if you are concerned about river conditions. Water Levels
  18. What does it do and what is a dubbing brush?
  19. When you are fishing with the tapered leaders are you buying them pre made in the little packages or are you starting with say 3 feet of 3X then 3 feet of 5X and so on? Does it turn over just as well with the self made leaders as it does with the premade ones?
