  1. Did anyone else buy a voucher from Living Social (like groupon) for a 2 hour lesson/ trip with these guys: http://www.bowriverflyfishing.com/ I thought it would be a good way to get someone to show me around Fish Creek before I move south this fall but I can't seem to get a call back from them to schedule a trip. Has anyone else done business with these guys before or do any of you know what might be going on with them?
  2. You are better off to pull the drive and use a USB connector to copy everything elsewhere. I know this is a couple weeks old but I'd be glad to pull the drive for you if you still need that drive. Takes about 20 minutes on that model, it's really in a bad spot. http://www.sterpin.net/uk/ddibookg4uk.htm
  3. Yeah the 7x on a 2 weight thing can be bad however it pales in comparison to some of the things you see at stocked lakes. I witnessed a rainbow caught at Allen bill pond this summer. Dragged over the rocks by a gaggle of screaming children until mom could be torn away from the beer cooler long enough to pin the poor fish down with her foot to tear the hook out. Fish was retuned by aforementioned screaming kids playing hot potato with it. Or last year where I watched someone who was a dead ringer for Cletus the Slack Jawed Yokel drag a fish from McLean pond through the grass to his chair so he didn't have to get up, followed by the classic underhanded lob release. Frankly I think you should have to sit a course before you are allowed a fishing license the same way we manage hunting licenses.
  4. I'm conflicted on this one, I for one would rather not be seen. Call it buck fever or whatever you like the simple fact is that sometimes you see what you want to see. I think anyone who has hunted has found themselves taking a long hard look at a bush or a rock convinced they were seeing a deer for a moment. If you do choose to wear orange don't expect it to save you, keep an eye out for other hunters.
  5. Think about getting a quality used laptop rather than a new POS. I used to sell computers and I'd cringe every time somebody bought one of those $500 Acers http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX31448(ME).aspx I have a Thinkpad similar to this I still use quite a bit, works great for the use you are talking about.
  6. I'm in the same situation. Got myself a case at Atmosphere kinda like a ziplock pouch but with some heavy duty zipper bits. Tested it by going on a Kannanskis River rafting trip, worked good.
  7. Wholesale Sports carries an Outcast pontoon repair kit that includes one. I saw it there last night on the wall of the fly shop.
  8. Headscan is right this doesn't have anything to do with the content being displayed, it's 100% about the connection between the cable box and the Dennon receiver. Easiest fix is to try another HDMI cable, keeping in mind that you do not need to spend more than $25 dollars on an HDMI cable unless it is 50 feet long. This probably isn't it though. Most likely issue is a firmware (operating system) bug on either the cable box or the receiver, you may find an update from Dennon support available. Shaw will not let you control firmware updates on their box but you might want to call them as they can force a reset over the network that goes a bit lower level than you can get at with your remote, easier than trying to get them to replace it.
  9. I just got off the phone with a broker for Intact Insurance, 350 a year less and they don't need the GF's policy info unless it becomes relevant due to an accident or something. Dear RBC: GTFO Thanks for the advice everyone.
  10. Dan are you in the insurance industry? My issue is them demanding a this kind of personal information more than it is any concern about my rate changing. I know not everyone would agree that this is any kind of concern but it bothers me when I get the feeling they are asking this kind of thing just because the think they can. Most people don't seem to care but I'm a computer / network guy and I have a somewhat different perspective, as do many of my peers. This bothers us because we understand how it can be correlated and abused, or at least we see it a bit more. So my question is do they need her policy number for a legit reason or are they fishing?
  11. I bought a Jeep recently and have had to change my insurance over. As the rep asked his million and one questions the fact that the girlfriend and I now live together came up and he got all shirty with me because she's not listed on the policy. I told him that she doesn't need to be as she has her own vehicle and there is no way she'd even try to drive the jeep anyway, she's half afraid of it. He says fine but the only way we can do that is if I provide him with her licence number and the policy number for the insurance on her car, which is through another company. How the hell is that any of their business? I figured there may be somebody in this business that can explain. Can I refuse them this information? If she's not on the policy why does it matter?
  12. If it's not on Facebook Stevey ain't interested. All we need them to do is click "Like" on Jack Layton and he'll send his boys around to sort them out.
  13. Iphone and other Google maps using handheld devices will update map info over 3G.
  14. What error message do you get when you try to send with the Imac?
  15. How much of that is used for newspapers and how much goes into useless crap advertising that I never look at? Before I moved into a condo we would get a stack of flyers over four inches high every week. I put a sign on the mailbox, called the flyer delivery companies, did everything I could think of. I don't want to have to haul the crap away to be recycled, I reused the dog food bags (25kg) for it and I'd take one a month. That's a stupid amount of waste. The real issues are more complex that people like to pretend.
  16. Thanks everyone for the replies. The rod I am planning on taking is a Greys 8/9 weight I picked up at the show recently. My thinking was that I didn't want to buy something heavier and have it hang on the wall in between tropical trips, the 8/9 I could use for Pike or Steelhead. However having cast the rod a bit now with a Rio Mainstream WF8 I am thinking the rod is much more of an 8 than a 9. Coincidently I am also changing jobs right now and I will have a good chunk more money available before I go so I may look at a heavier rod, anyone ever try an Echo Ion? I'll also have some money available to get a guide for a day or two. I was looking at these guys: http://www.thereelbaja.com/cabo_san_lucas_fishing.html Tightline, did you mostly fish from the beach? Would you recommend the guide you used? Thanks for the line recommendation, trying to find one.
  17. This is sort of correct. You can use any external drive for things like movies and music but if you want to be able to install games to it you need the Microsoft drive. It's a standard drive in that funky slap on the side of it case but is uses a screwy drive format to make it difficult to copy games. The ethernet over power things are kind of interesting but a dedicated cable is really the way to go if you can. Setting up one of those things is really easy though, try the Western Digital Live Wire. If wireless is your only option you can disable the encryption and rely on MAC Address list security. Encryption will add a certain amount of latency (lag) to every packet sent, the problems with that approach are pretty obvious though.
  18. I got a pair of these last year: http://www.basspro.com/White-River-Fly-Sho.../98057/-1471950 I bought them because they had a size that fit my fat azz off the shelf and didn't have a 37" inseam or size 13 feet. They held up better than I thought to 30 or so days of fishing. My only other options are in the $500 custom range so I'm going to buy another pair of these when they have the spring sale and keep them in the closet.
  19. I'm getting geared up for the trip to Mexico this summer and I need to find a line for my new rod, I'm thinking about the SA Redfish, Rio Outbound Tropical or some other short front taper tropical line. Going to be targeting rooster fish and similar things from shore. Thing is I'd like to try them out before I throw down the bucks for a line I don't like, again. Does anybody have something similar I could borrow to chuck around in the park for a bit?
  20. I've been not so patiently waiting for these because of the GPS tagging, that is a killer feature for me. I work for a Panasonic dealer so as soon as i hear anything about them I'll report back.

  22. I have an Midge 8ft 3/4 wt and I love it, far exceeded my expectations. I was also looking at a Reddington CT and a TFO Finesse but was recommended the Midge buy the guys at WSS, I think I got Rod, line and a simple reel for just over 200. I have had 2 friends also try it and the first question they had was "you paid how much for this?" I've also casted a Windwarrior 8wt at a shop directly comparing it to some stuff from Sage (flight) and Loomis (don't remember the model). IMO it doesn't stand out against the others like the Midge did but it was also $200 cheaper. Still my favorite but by a smaller margin. I've been pretty impressed with Amundson.
  23. I used to do Edmonton to Calgary and back every week, there are spots in between Leduc and Edmonton that can be really bad. There is one corner just by Nisku that is usually icy and knowing this I always slow down there but I still ended up in the ditch one night, it was just too icy. You made the right call for your son. I agree with your other observations though, I drove back convoy style with a buddy on the second and we saw some remarkable morons. I will never understand why some people can't see the danger, wispy snow blowing across the highway = BAD.
