  1. Yep, good luck finding any open water around here for a while yet - you're going to have to drive to find it. I'm eyeballing the mudpuddles on the side of the roads right now, may have to have a flick or two. It's just pure torment reading the postings on here about the fishing people are doing on the bow.
  2. First up, register your domain through a domain registry only, stay away from registering your domain name through a host when you sign up for a package - that way, you don't have to pay the transfer costs if you change hosts. Just log into your registrar and update DNS. When it comes to a domain search, it's not easy cause many are taken up. You can go with a .ca if you want to personalize and advertise that you're canadian - but keep the name short and see if you can do unforgettable. The most memorable names are totally off the wall. One company here in town, i've seen the name once and have never forgotten it -Chickenlip Consulting. A local band name i'll never forget is called My Huge Ass. Doesn't guarantee success in any way, just makes people remember your name over so many others. Second, you need hosting - and before you decide on that, what kind of website do you want? If it's a basic static site, you can generally host it with your ISP for free (or as part of your internet package) but if you want more complex, like a mysql/php driven forum or CMS website, then you'll need a host that can provide. now you have to think about the crowd you're gearing for Sundance - and not to sound like an arse here but you can't put reams of information on your website like some of your postings here cause it won't get read by anyone. Short, well written content is the most important part of your site. Keep it clean and simple and readable - information at your fingertips. The fastest way to get me to navigate away from a website is to have to search for what I need - like contact info. Many people want the personalized phone calls and if they can't find your number - like many sites out there - then it's customer lost. The honest truth is many companies are realizing that websites really are a waste of time - trying to get google ranks and trying to target an audience isn't that easy. Many are now looking at the number of hits they are getting a month and realizing a nice simple - and to the point - one page site is better than pages and pages of info about them - they stick to the basics and it works for them. Be prepared to advertise - twitter, facebook group, free advertising sites (yeah, there are a few out there) that cost you nothing but you have to be willing to do the footwork. JMHO. and good luck
  3. oh my geesus, what I wouldn't give for some time spent like that. Wtf was that "Censored" at the end? Really was a teaser.
  4. Not too bad at all Gotta steal that one for posting elsewhere.
  5. I've always wondered what happened to the art of fishing and the pure enjoyment of it... There's a reason it's called fishing and not catching but cripes, stop looking for the easy route, just get out and enjoy it for what it is...
  6. want to repost it so the rest of us can have a read???
  7. Online backups are fine, just don't backup anything that you or someone else would consider sensitive information... There have been examples where businesses used online backup companies - everything was online and in someone else's hands... Well someone else's hands went into receivership and nobody knows who has all this sensitive data. It's cause for worry.
  8. External hard drives are great for backing up, but yeah, you should have some place safe to keep it. Generally not such a concern as business but any data that you don't have 2 copies of is data you don't want... Do NOT rely on your antivirus - it's not your salvation... The newer malware, the rogue antivirus programs will bybass pretty much any antivirus out there and they are getting nastier. Not going to put down antivirus companies but freebies are just as good - if not better - than the paid versions. Linux can/will be your salvation when you get infected with a winblows virus/malware. I always use linux live (ubuntu) to copy data from an infected system - ain't that a bitch for microsoft eh? You can use linux to remove the worst of the viruses as well... Linux doesn't care about microsoft security - it's non-existant. Through linux live, you have access to ALL files on windows, and that's sad. This is for everyone - do yourselves a favor and download ubuntu workstation, burn the ISO to cd/dvd and keep it somewhere handy. All you need to do is boot to it, and hit the prompt to run it without making changes to your computer. It will load itself basically from the cd/dvd - doesn't make any changes to your computer. At that point, you can install antivirus to scan your computer AND mount the windows hard drive so you can transfer files from your infected windows drive to an external USB drive. Problem solved. Download is here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download You guessed it... I rarely run windows anymore. This is coming from an IT guy with 18 years in the field dealing with windows and it's downfalls.
  9. I feel for you... it's been over 3 years since I lost my dog to mouse poison - one of the neighbors had it out in the open. I still can't think about her without choking up - It's hard to believe how much they get under your skin. Definitely part of the family. My condolences.

    Dry Only?

It's all preference and what you're going for... I have hundreds of flies but I generally wind up with an olive beadhead as they fly of choice - for some reason, it just works.
  11. I love how people talk about 8 million a year like it's nothing, or doesn't want to be long term anymore - yada yada yada. If someone wanted to pay me over 8 million a year i'd be their bitch and shovel pig **** for the term. I'll just shut my big yap now
  12. there was a bunch of good pike attack vids on youtube. have to take a looksee later - always good for a laugh.
  13. bitten only once? I get bitten (or at least bleed some) just about every time I go out. fair game says I It's amazing how fast a pike can double back on itself
  14. not talking while it's in the water. i've done that too as long as it's easy on the fish... i've seen people pick up the fish with the hook and try to flick it off without touching it... and if that little emoticon is for me, I don't use bait whatsoever.
  15. That part is confusing - hatchery trout aren't big by any means unless they are feeding them to a couple of pounds - the chances that any trout caught on a barbed treble is going to take at least 2 barbs in the mouth - wouldn't you think? One barbless hook at times can be difficult to remove from a trout - a couple of barbs is going to do damage - and I don't care who catches the damn thing. Again, it all boils down to who's fishing and how hard they are dealing with the fish. i've seen many idiots grab the hook and flick the trout back in the water without touching the fish.
  16. I personally think alot of these stats are skewed to what an individual believes to be honest. In the spring through fall, I can usually catch fair numbers of fish (winter? forget it) - moreso pike and walleye - and all catch/release. I love fishing and i'm sure there's a few fish that didn't survive. I do try to do as much as I can to avoid kills - all trebles are removed and only one single barbless per lure. That's my way of doing things - my personal choice. Fish on is a fish caught. Heck, there's times i'll pull out the ol woodchopper, remove all the hooks and laugh my ass off while pike are hammering it over and over. Just watching this thing fly through the air a dozen times during one cast is awesome. There are fish that I didn't think would make it - get them back in the water and get some water flowing through the gills and the damn thing turns around and grabs my hand. I don't believe that my mortality rates are that bad. yeah, there's been a few trout that went belly up tho I tried to revive - bleeding mainly and yeah, i do feel bad. i've seen many c&r fishermen handle fish in terrible manners then crow about being catch and release only - it's all in what you learn and all based on your own personal ethic. We've all seen it.
  17. yep, he gives alot - course he has alot but how much does one person need eh?
  18. yep, he's done his time - I don't think anyone questions that. BUT Did he do enough time for what he's done? I don't care what a judge says - our justice system speaks volumes about them.
  19. whoa, he tries to have someone killed - what if he had succeeded? and now it's ok to let him play hockey again? make his millions and laugh his ass off again? don't think so... I was living in toronto when the bernardo case broke - there was a gag order set and we were trying to get news out of the states on what the heck was going on. The chair for someone like Bernardo is too fast - what they should have done with that SOB is toss him into general population with the murderers and let them sort it out - oh yes, there would be blood. Same with Homolka - she was in the lap of luxury for her jail sentence and those girls are just has dead. Sick individuals.
  20. Sundance, maybe i'm misreading your posts but it's hard to know what side of the coin you're on. Do you believe in global warming or not? What is it that you personally believe? search google for global dimming then post back for a discussion. The effects of aircraft alone are amazing. Take a peek at the studies done during 9/11 when all air traffic was grounded.
  21. Yep, in the same boat here. The cheapies actually last alot longer than anything else out there. Clean them once in a while with a bit of alcohol and a rag.
  22. And that's my point. When it comes to contamination and fish - mercury seems to be the first and only consideration. Lead is probably a bigger concern than mercury and has anyone really tested the waters around alberta for it? There's so much pollution in general that gets dumped into the waterways and lakes all across the country. Think about the simple things like car exhaust. It's going to settle somewhere - yeah we breathe it but it will build up in the water. Think about the consumption of the fish and how safe it is. What else comes to mind.
  23. hush comes over the crowd? i'll probably make them scream - I hate perch - don't like the taste or texture but they are fun to catch. Even more fun when people get pissed that I outfish them and toss them all back. but that's another story. That said - yep, guidelines. When has the government ever got their heads of their arses long enough to provide the proper information. Yeah, mercury is a problem but what else gets into the rivers and lakes. Lead is a big problem - hazardous on every level to every species and alot of it comes from fishermen and hunters over water. There's a reason you can't shoot lead over water in this province. Wish they would ban it from fishing as there are other alternatives but it's up to the person to make a choice and not use it. Everything that goes up must come down. i don't know anymore.
  24. This turns me off... For instance, it is recommended that women of childbearing age and kids under 11 avoid eating walleye and northern pike caught in the Bow River, below the Bassano dam, while healthy adults are advised to limit consumption to 75 grams per week. Maybe i'm just less learned but the article states that most of the mercury in the bow is from natural sourcs - so why just below the Bassano dam? Where is the mercury coming from? And if many folks don't read the regs (as we all know) then how are they supposed to know? I know people that probably smoke more than 75 grams of dope a week. 75 grams isn't much. Have you seen people taking fish below the Bassano dam?
