  1. I've never owned a gun, never been a hunter but like the next guy I feel there's room for all god's creatures - on a plate next to the potatoes and peas. Here's my take - look beyond the registry itself - and let's apply occam's razor on this situation... I don't believe that the long gun registry has much to do with long guns - yeah the police can say what they want - and and there's always people that will follow like sheep cause its supposed to keep them "safe". Cops aren't stupid, and they know as well as we do that having the LGR isn't going to help eliminate crime. So, all things being equal, what's the simple answer? After the millions of canadians signed up for a PAL and registered weapons - answered all the intrusive questions, the RCMP et al now have one helluva database on many canadians - and that in itself is priceless, worth the couple of billion spent. database queries are basically a "six degrees of separation" - just a different way to look at it. And this is just another database, there's many more. If the registry dies, the database is going to stay. People are saying "yay harper for trying to kill the registry" - but I say for him it's a win/win game. It was harper that introduced the "long form census" with all it's intrusive questions, threatened jail time for people that didn't fill it in? The damage was done, people filled it in, then he repeals it. It's all about data collection people - everybody wants a look into your life...
  2. Just wondering if anyone is doing any contracting for different jobs - wondering what the market is like. There doesn't seem like much online for full time jobs but i'm really considering getting the heck out of Edmonton... Can Calgary handle another newf?
  3. I have so many stories on my mothers creativity - maybe that's why I have a bit of a tic today Growing up in small town Newfie, e were a pretty rough and tumble bunch, and we could never turn down a chance to educate outsiders in our way of having fun... When I was about 11, my butterball cousin came in from Ottawa wearing a pure white sailor suit - sure did stand out in a crowd. Decided we'd take him fishing down at the local wharf - for lobsters - with a bicycle rim, a net and a can of sardines. yeah, not exactly legal... Long story short he got so excited when we pulled in the first one that he stuffed it under his shirt and took off for home. He squealed like a pig that day - both to his parents and because the lobster got him by one of his boy boobs and wouldn't let go Later that day he found himself up to his neck in a sewage ditch while still wearing his little white sailor suit - he wouldn't listen to us and decided to take "the path less taken". I spent about 4 hours sitting out in front of the house with a sign around my neck that said "bad kid" and something else I can't post here...
  4. Got into a discussion last night about creative punishments our parents had for us - i'm 39 and what my mother did to punish me would have her put in jail today... She never beat me, even when I caught the house on fire that one time. She just punished with creativity and embarassment and it really worked. For example, 9 year old, I was throwing rocks across the main street at the trains and wouldn't you know it, a cop car came by. Smash goes the windshield. Cop talks with mom and I started getting that look from her - you know the one that makes you go "uh oh, i'm in for it now". She never ever got mad, just got even. Within an hour, I was strapped into the dogs harness and tied to the clothesline on the SIDE of the house in full view of everyone. Neighborhood kids were throwing rocks, poking me with sticks, had a grand ol laugh - sure I had full run of the clothesline but they stayed out of reach of me. To this day, I haven't thrown a rock at anything.
  5. That's what it pretty much boils down to... I've met a few new fly fishers over the years, not hard to tell which ones are trying to teach themselves. I have no problems taking my time to rig them up properly, and give them some casting lessons and a fly or two. Don't really care if they outfish me, but it sure puts a smile on my face when my little bit of assistance lands them their first ever fish on the fly. I always love that look that comes with the first fish on the fly - you know the look - like they now know the true meaning of addiction
  6. It's good to see some good fines being laid in these cases. Just surfing some Newfoundland poaching news and fines, here's one of them: On July 14, 2009 at Provincial Court in Gander, NL, Jamie Gleason of Virgin Arm, NL was convicted of using a line equipped with more than one hook while angling in scheduled waters, jigging Atlantic salmon in inland waters and possessing Atlantic salmon caught in contravention. He received a total fine of $2,000.00. A car, rod & reel, five (5) Atlantic salmon and associated fishing tackle were forfeited to the Crown. Mr. Gleason was apprehended by IFEP officers during Operation "Double Claw". An undercover operation conducted on the Campbellton River by IFEP during the summers of 2007 and 2008. More: Poaching on the Humber River Results in Significant Penalties In response to concerns expressed by local residents and conservation groups about poaching activities on the Humber River near the spillway at Deer Lake, an extensive undercover investigation by Department of Justice Inland Fish Enforcement officers has resulted in significant fines and penalties. Commenced in 2007 Operation Click resulted in eight individuals receiving fishing prohibitions ranging from one to five years. As well, fines totalling more than $20,000 have been imposed and a significant amount of equipment has been forfeited. Officers are continuing to respond to complaints of salmon poaching and during the last two weeks, seven investigations involving illegal netting in the Bay St. George and Notre Dame Bay areas have taken place. These investigations resulted in 30 charges against nine individuals, including the offences of illegal netting of Atlantic salmon, illegal possession of salmon and obstruction of a peace officer. Also, 13 Atlantic salmon, a pick-up truck, an all-terrain vehicle, two boats, and an assortment of fishing related equipment have been seized. Since Inland Fish Enforcement commenced 2009 seasonal operations in May, a total of 117 fish-related charges against 55 individuals have been filed. Numerous offences involving all-terrain vehicles, hunting and firearms violations have also been encountered. More interesting reading from SPAWN http://www.spawn1.ca/2009Convictions.html
  7. Nothing like a river to get the juices flowing eh? beautiful shots
  8. sweet jaysus that's a nice fish
  9. Not in Calgary mind you but west of Banff. Spent the last week tenting it just outside of banff through to Jasper - heck of a week but glad to be home singing the praises of a hot shower and a queen sized bed All I can say is oh my god, what a beautiful river to spend some time in while surrounded by the mountains... I can fully understand my jealousy now of living in Edmonton while everyone that lives south has year round fishing of the bow to experience. Only managed a couple of small trout on the fly, lost a couple but that doesn't matter. We took a run down the hiway for a bit then beat bush for a while to get to the water. Seen lots of dried up bones, probably deer - seen a few yotes but no bears at all... I've always wanted to experience a grizz - not up close and personal mind you - but just to experience one in the wild. Every time we talked about fishing, it rained - hard and cold - wasn't dressed properly for it but what the heck. Definitely going back before the snow flies....
  10. Done... I just hope they don't throw out the baby with the bathwater... Too many times everyone suffers for the sake of a few.
  11. Crowsnest, was it you by chance in a fishcat (or an outcast) on muir lake on monday evening?
  12. I bought a set of Pro-tac fins. They get me where i'm going in a hurry but I have morton's toe, and my toes hurt after a couple of hours with the soft soled waders on. I'm going to look at these other ones, looks like they are open toed. Met a fellow over the weekend, had a set of outcast fins, looked pretty neat. He wore his boots and slid on the fins. http://www.thefishinhole.com/index.cfm?ima...;PRODUCTSEARCH=
  13. For someone like me who's so accident prone... Yeppers, superglue is the best to have... If i'm going anywhere remote, i'll have some suture tape as well, great stuff. Tree sap is good in a pinch but I also carry a styptic pencil with me for the smaller stuff when I get chewed on by a pike. Also carry some spray hand sanitizer with me, you can get them not much bigger than a pen. The stuff you pack doesn't need to be huge by any means.
  14. And back into the bass, big pike, pickerel, walleyes and whatever else swims in the waters around the Matachewan area. Been in Alberta for 10 years now and haven't really had a vacation the whole time and the only expectation anyone has of me is to fish Wish me luck, it's gonna be soooooo hard to take
  15. I finally hooked a fish on a fly on the NSR here in Edmonton, cripes I have no luck in that river at all. Little walleye, all of maybe a 1/2 pound, it managed to get off but I feel much better now. Beautiful evening but a little windy...
  16. LMAO... Yeah, hard lesson learned.
  17. boiled a few eggs for breakfast this morning, after 5 minutes I figured they were done. Pulled one, dipped it in cold water and started peeling. A chunk came out exposing the not so done innards and yolk. Fine, let the other 2 boil and threw the other in the "microwave" for 30 seconds to finish cooking it. Picture this, I pull the plate out of the microwave - egg is well done - and put it on the coffee table. 30 seconds or so later it starts to whistle really loud and I move in close to see what the heck. BOOM!!! there's egg everywhere and in tiny little pieces - i've got a few minor burn spots on my arms, nothing serious... Am I the only one that didn't know that eggs in the microwave isn't such a good idea?
  18. I'm sorry to hear about your dog, hope it all comes out well for you and your pup - but sometimes there's very little you can do to protect them... I lost my girl over 3 years ago, she got away from us and as far as we can tell she got into mouse poison - I asked the vet straight up if poisoning was a possibility when she got sick and she said no. It wasn't til it was too late that she said yeah, she was poisoned and by then there was nothing that could be done. After 3 years, i'm still not over the loss of that little dog. Hard to believe how fast they become a deeply entrenched part of your life and i'll never find another like her. The best you can do is try to keep them safe.
  19. Unfortunate way to put it but it's hard to disagree... I just don't understand why adults don't make kids wear them on any body of water. I always have one on, be it boat or tube - hardly notice it after a while and I can actually put the butt of my rod into the straps to aid in fightig fish It's like seatbelts - I always have one on - and had to use it once. Young fellow hit me head on, was in my lane - combined speed of maybe 160 km/hr. Not fun - lots of bruising from the belt but bruising is better than dead. Live to fish another day
  20. I'm amazed at how many people get on the water in boats and tubes without a lifejacket on, scares me to no end but it angers me when they have their kids in the boat and not a lifejacket to be seen... I was at Devils lake on hiway 37 this morning and I talked to a few people that were just getting set up to go out fishing. Again, small aluminum boat, no PFD's - but yet, right by the boat launch stands a cross - a deadly reminder of the 3 people that lost their lives on Devil's just over 2 years ago. How many people don't use lifejackets? Let's get a show of hands... it's too late when your boat is upside down and you're in the middle of a lake without one. Now for a silly question... I've floated rivers (after getting taken off my feet) and have had my waders fill up with water - not a great feeling and i'm sure we've all experienced it at some point. I've often wondered something when tubing - will a standard lifejacket still keep a person afloat with sheer body weight and a wader load of water? It's not something I want to test, just wondering if I ever fall out of the tube anytime soon - i've come close a few times... Has anyone experienced this?
  21. That's what it looks like, human teeth marks - they trying to create another loch ness?
  22. ok, that's flippin' scary
  23. oh, if you don't want prescription meds for a pain killer, you should try a product called Mersyndol - they are non prescription but you have to ask the pharmacist for them. T3's never did squat for me with pain and mersyndol is lower on codiene but they work wonders - even on migraine. Haven't had to take them in years but it's the first thing i'll reach for if i'm in serious pain.
  24. There's a list of foods to avoid - diet is a big thing with controlling gout. something else you may want to try - half a teaspoon of baking soda in water before bedtime... A friend gets gout, i've never had it - but it seems the acids build up in your system overnight and the baking soda helps him... I feel for you, my friend suffers with it terribly when he's off his diet.
  25. That's gotta be one of the most craziest things i've heard in years - but I love it!!! Going to have a go at it one day at cardiff park
