  1. no go on the tfo pro here anymore hey lethfisher...what about doin a poll if you're interested in what people on here think,i know what you're goin through i hate making decisions like this but you will definately be schooled on some products by the end of this process, good knowledge to have... your poll could be listed by brand name and type or just type or the two rods you have in mind eg. Spey Switch OR TFO "model' Switch TFO "model" Spey Sage "model" Single Hand Loop "model" Spey Loop "model" Switch etc etc etc make it whatever you have in mind,if you have a price range that's your first step and allow to break yourself a bit more on price causee you prbly will but set a price and go from there, trust me this won't be your last purcase on fishing gear up until last summer all i fished was glass and swore i'd never need a 'fancy' rod now here i am a few months later with a graphite 9' and 12'6,which is still pretty basic equipment and browsing all the time for something else....maybe something used will turn up and that'll be a good shove in the right direction, speaking of which have you looked on the red shed website poppy is a wicked guy,i called and left a message about a rod i was interested in and the next morning it was off the site listings,he later told me he got the message and 'held' it for me.so a bump for him red shed good luck and let us know what you decide
  2. that would be awkward as hell but on the positive you can take what you know now and teach yourself to cast without the bad habits,if you have any ...and if it's as easy said than done you'll probably wind up a better caster AND be able to cast both when you heal here's a thought, what about a two handed rod? there's no swinging your arms around and no impact on your body,i know everything has been spey spey spey but in your case it might be a very logical answer
  3. prbly 10 rigs or so in a day... but i tend to get quite a few back...i using nothing but 10lb providing i can get it through the hook eyes so i haul up branches etc with worms, flies, lures, indies attached,i see some wild set ups, mostly big SJWs
  4. i'm no pro or old hand at the spey thingy but you should be able to 'flick' line no matter how much head you have out....it's not gonna be a spey cast but more just a snake roll kinda thing or a flick of the rod tip out in front of you it's one handed with the reel and butt more tucked under your top arm....i fish my skagit like this all the time with the head loop anywhere from a cpl wraps on the reel to any one of the guides(the outer guides and on the spey motions come back into play)....the other day i drifted my nymphs through with the indie under my rod tip and wham-o...18" bow,my rod is 12'6 tip to tip so it was no more than 11' feet out....just mess around with it,you'll make it work if there's fish involved
  5. the opti stream is next on my list for my 9' ....i can't wait to try it out
  6. i have 10-12 days on the Bow in January and every day so far this month....weather has been very decent and the fish not so bad either all spey but i'm rarely flickin more then the skagit head, makes light work of it with the 12'6 been playing with the sink tip and the streamers, shooting a cpl rods lengths at a 45 down river, need some work in that area but it's doable if i get in the rythm
  7. why is it loose? what about just building it up from under the feet instead? glue or epoxy shim stock or something, might be able to hide the handy work better or maybe take the feet of another reel that's pooched, make that work some how
  8. cool report,a lot of different names as far as what we see around here interesting how 3rd place is a 350 dollar rod and 8 out of 12 are under 600...what's the conversion to make it relative? are they typically being tested with traditional long belly lines or do they get into scandi and skagit heads too?
  9. just noticed you are the big 1-4 today,14 is a good number, was my number when I played hockey have a good one
  10. spey is a style of casting not so much a rod two handed rods were developed for spey casting switch rods were developed for either single hand over hand casting or two handed spey casting there's some grey area here as far as switch rods and switch casting...(terminology) also for the record you can overhand cast a two handed spey rod,(look it up on youtube, neat) and single hand spey a switch now the traditional spey rod is 15' feet long and for use with long or mid belly lines,i guess in my earlier reply i'm pretty much only thinking of the bow so IMO there's no need for the 15' 10wt or whatever rod as much class can be had in casting them they're over kill and make the bow fish caught small,it would take a monster fish to make any sport of it.i almost bought a 10wt because it was cheap, glad i didn't thx to ninja advice i researched switch rods and every where i turned i heard they do neither well but i see them cast and catch fish perfectly all the time so maybe you can tell me what the switch is like,if you buy it so in comes the light spey is a new term to me and something i'm interested in for fishing around here, something around 11' ...two hand style, light, for two handed spey casting only,i think the spey casting style is the most useful tool on the bow,my opinion finding what you like is more than casting a rod in a parking lot or for 30 mins on the river....it's spending time and trying different scenerios and conditions of fishing to come up with what YOU like...or maybe might like in your next rod there's lots of discussions on the intraweb...pictures too! ..where do you think i came up with most of this? when in doubt google and dig deep.....actually go read the fist few replies to this thread not hard to tell i'm still wired from work, one more shift then i'm fishing again.....sweeeeeet wonder what bamboo rods are like, might have to try it out
  11. get a light spey...i wouldn't go over #6 and learn how to spey cast the single handers,it's allows you to fish places that doesn't allow room for back cast and it's fun!!....also remember that for summer/fall fishing 40' casts are the outside end of your fishing area....most fish are caught inside of that...i'm passing this on as i have gone through the same thing you are now and this advice was passed on to me i have tfo purely for the warranty, they warranty right in town here,it's no fault also i don't need a 500+ dollar rod to go fishing...spend money on line tho my next rod will be and 11' light spey....#5 or #6, possibly the Amundson Wind Warrior, once I get to demo it first....they sound fair enough in price and have a lifetime warranty
  12. hey thanks for that,I'm more curious than anything the guy I bought this stuff off was a rod builder too, along with all the books and videos there is some books on rod building as well so maybe it has something to do with that. I really enjoy gettin this old stuff,it's neat to go through...although i have replaced the simple whip finisher with a rotating matarelli,i couldn't for the life of me figure the 'simple' one out and i can use the matarelli on my first try without even looking up directions...also got 4 or 5 bobbins but i am gonna start up-grading to ceramic and use the old ones for wire... like i said,I really enjoy goin through all this old stuff...we'll see how the tying part goes, once i figure out what all these feathers, hairs and hackles are, there's one bag labeled and that's badger
  13. great, the mystery bobbin i figured if anyone would know it was you, thanks for lookin
  14. So I bought a bunch of tying gear and supplies of an older gentleman and I'm trying to figure out what everything is,I have a bankers box full of material of which nothing is labeled....fun stuff!! But I have this bobbin type thing and I'm wondering if it's just a bobbin or is it special purpose,it has some kind of tensioner as you can see by the thumb screw.I searched online and couldn't compare it to anything.Anyone know?
  15. definately book max for a walk and wade,he's all about getting people catching fish, casting better and over all a better grasp on the sport, ...money well spent to say the least in the mean time get out to the fly shops, read back into the forums here for set-up tips tricks etc. then just pound the river...do some walking and driving around some advice i can give you is that even tho the bow is a big river to look at it breaks down into small sections quite easy....compare those sections to a small mountain stream,if it looks like it should hold fish it probably does.oh i have another piece of advice, learn the regs, respect the areas and the fish, catch and release promotes more fish for you and others to catch again.so handling of fish is very important too most people won't lead you to their favorite spots but they will post/tell you what's been working ...that gives you a lot to play off ...the rest is just foot work good luck and welcome to your new addiction
  16. A pirate walks in to a bar with a steering wheel haning out of his pants. The bartender says, "Hey pirate, what's with the steering wheel hanging from your pants?" Pirate says, "ARRRGGG, it's drivin' me nuts!"
  17. too late, thread is jacked Two aliens from outer space land at a gas station and one of them walks up to a pump and says take me to your leader…. The pump just sets there all quit like so the alien says take me to your leader or Ill phaser your ass but it receives no reply... Then the other alien says wait don’t shoot him and then the first alien says hay man I know what I’m doing and then he shoots the gas pump. They both get blown back to outer space and the first alien says hey man how did you know that was going to happen. The second alien replies by saying “any one who can wrap his dick around himself twice and stick it in his ear has got to be one tuff mother f**ker.
