It was my first time there, and after I got past the moose, I was only out for maybe an hour and a half, but I did land a nice rainbow that taped out at 20". It's a gorgeous lake, and I'd like to spend more time there some day. Terry Actually, she was in pretty good shape -- very healthy looking coat. Terry

Potm September 09 Official Entries
TerryH replied to Flytyer's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Although I've had a waterproof camera for a few years now, I've not had much luck at getting decent underwater fish photos. This is partly because I fish by myself a lot. Even when I have been with someone, it seems the lighting is never right, the water is not clear, or the fish is out of focus or not in the frame. However, the theme for this month's POTM turned out to be perfect, because this past weekend, I finally got a shot that turned out not too bad. I was out with my son David, and he caught this beautiful cutty on a CW stream in BC. Of course the photo is special because it is a permanent reminder of the great time David and I had fishing together that day. However, it is truly special for another reason. On the same date in August, I was fishing the exact same spot with a good friend from Edmonton, and you guessed it -- I caught what I'm sure is the same fish. The following shows pictures from both days, and I have marked a few spot patterns that have convinced me it is the same fish. Although I expect that fish will be watching for me on October 19, I think he deserves a rest, so I'll find something else to do that day . Terry -
From today's Edmonton Journal: Hippo eats man fishing illegally KINSHASA A hippopotamus killed a member of Democratic Republic of Congo government forces at Virunga National Park while he was fishing illegally, a local environmental NGO said Saturday. Private Sebagendi was killed Thursday when he was fishing along with five other people on Lake Edward in spite of a fishing ban. “As he could not swim he was devoured by the hippo which had earlier overturned their boat,” an NGO official said, adding that the incident was the first of its kind in the park.

The pictures of the leopard frog got me thinking about a survey I recall being done a few years ago. Looking for info on the web led me to the following report (see link below), which shows (Fig. 1) the very sparse distribution of these critters. I note that the figure doesn't show much of a population in the Highwood area, so the folks studying this frog might be interested in your find. BTW, very nice pictures. Nice Looking Bow Down South (don't Look Supremeleader)
TerryH replied to lorney's topic in Photo Posts
You're probably right. It was the yellowish colour and the jaw that got me thinking maybe cuttbow. I landed a nice male cutty in BC last week that had the same jaw. However, as I look back at some of my Crowsnest bow pictures, I tend to agree with Hawg. Anyway, regardless, that is one damn nice fish, especially for small water. Terry -

Great looking fish, but are you sure it's not a cutbow? Terry -
I agree with Max. I've had some great August days on the Livingstone when the cutties would do what we all expect from them -- i.e. eat big ugly dry flies, the more legs the better. However, there are times when you need to get specific (pmds, green drakes, bwo's or whatever) and that can also mean go small. Those cutties aren't as dumb as we all think. Terry PS I'm not a pro, but that's my 2 cents worth.

Another Stampeder dynasty??????????? When was the first one, I must've missed it? Terry -
I have a set of Yakima bars that attach to the original equipment rails on my suburban. I bought them quite a few years ago, so I can't recall what I paid, but it was no where near $600. It works great for my canoe and my 9' outcast pontoon. The version shown in the following link appears to be a newer version of what I have, and the listed MSRP is $226CAD. Loon's Top Ride ("shake'n Bake") Inquiry
TerryH replied to ÜberFly's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
Top Ride contains both a desiccant to dry the fly (the big chunks) and a floatant powder. Their Blue Ribbon product contains just the floatant powder. There are other brands of floatant powder, which you can use to recharge the Top Ride container. Terry -
Bigger Fish From A Float Tube Help...
TerryH replied to robert's topic in General Chat - Fishing Related
A long handle net obviously helps. I've also found that it is much easier to land bigger fish at the side rather than between your feet. It least that's my experience in a pontoon boat. Terry -
I buy barbless when I can, but like most people who've been tying for a long time, I have a big inventory of barbed hooks. While on the topic of barbless hooks, I noticed something recently. I was using a double nymph rig with the top fly being a stonefly tied on a barbless hook. I prefer to tie the dropper off the bend of the top hook, and I discovered that with the smooth tapered point on the barbless hook, the dropper line had a tendency to slide off. A pinched barb provides enough of a bump to prevent this. After it happened a couple of times (slow learner here) I reverted to tying the dropper from the eye of the top fly. Terry
