  1. Another difference is, if Taco ever said "I'd like to bust your knee caps", your fear factor should jump up a little bit. I've never caught a smallmouth. I grew up chasing saltwater fish in the US, and did go largemouth fishing from time to time. Unlike the vast majority of my brethren, I didn't find it all that fun. Probably because to crank them out of the heavy cover you had to use such heavy gear. The few times I caught them on lighter tackle, it was a kick. Catching one (a largemouth) on a fly rod would be a blast. And from what I've seen on the fishing shows, the smallies fight much harder. Next time I'm in the BC interior I'll certainly take a day to try it out.
  2. Clive, I understand people's aversion to the "obscene" profits the oil companies are making. Sounds like everyone is getting screwed. You cited Shell's profits in Q1. This is Shell's North American President's reply to a reporters question: "Look at our revenues and our income for the last quarter. If we had made $7.8 million on $114 million of revenue, nobody would call that excessive, because that's 7½ percent. We made $7.8 billion profit on $114 billion revenue -- same 7½ percent. So to me that is not an excessive number when banks and pharmaceuticals and IT companies earn a whole lot more." Of course the statement is self serving, but 7.5% profit isn't that big a number. Now 114Billion is! Almost all of my oil patch work has been in Canada. Several years ago I went down to the States to help train on one of our new systems. I was shocked at the difference in the states. Everything was dirtier, older, less well maintained, etc. Environmentally, Canada is orders of magnitudes over what I saw in the Northern US. While there is lots still to do, you guys really are on the right track.
  3. Isn't it funny how this almost instantly turned into a Big Oil/GW debate? The company screwed up, hopefully they will fix it and move on. Not every event has to be turned into a oil good/oil bad, gw true/gw false debate, does it? Clive, If we can promise to play nice, I'd love to sit down over a beer to discuss sometimes!
  4. While I could be led to believe that the company in question has made significant efforts to keep birds off the ponds, when they fail they need to be seriously held to task. It is not a valid argument to compare ducks landing in a toxic tailings pond to a botulism outbreak. Unless I am missing something? However, "Failed because of snow" does not mean they failed to take snow into account. Tires "fail because of nails", electronics "fail because of vibration." Does not mean they did not design for these occurrences, just that it was the failure mechanism. The question is what they failed to take into account, and was it realistically preventable.
  5. I don't want to put the kibosh on any good ideas, but I'm personally not interested in putting this together for another river. Not because I don't think it's a good idea, but from a logistics standpoint. I'd rather keep it close to home. That said, if someone wants to organize for another river, please have at it. They could use it too.
  6. Hydro: http://flyfishcalgary.com/board/index.php?...=3644&st=20 Gets going on page 2. Pretty interesting stuff. To continue the hijack, while I can understand the desire to get the fish in quickly in order to minimize mortality (and we have dueling studies to debate whether fight time matters or not), for me, I gotta say I like to fight fish. In fact, it is the primary reason I picked up a fly rod. It is fun to catch fish on a fly rod. If I wanted to get them in quickly, I know better tools to do that with. The rods are shorter and stiffer and you cast the lure, not the line. I certainly don't try to fish them to exhaustion, but my goal is not to get them in as quickly as possible either. Please do not interpret this as slamming anyone else's technique, just saying what I like to do, right or wrong.
  7. Lynn, You caused me to have a revelation: I think the vast right wing conspiracy that has been manipulating western monetary policy and choreographing wars for the past 3/4 century have coordinated with the liberal left media and created the global warming conspiracy. The reason is they can make more money "curing" it than their tired old money and war thing. And in a truly inspired move hired Al Gore as their spokesman (I mean, who would have ever conceived of that unholy marriage? Other than me I mean.) Disclaimer: The above is satire. It is meant as a GW neutral position.
  8. I can't tell him to put it back on. I stole it cuz I need it more.
  9. Hah, that's funny! I know it was TM right away, but couldn't figure out what was different!!
  10. Man, if I wanted to push a button......
  11. Reading Flyanglers cleanup post got me thinking: Without Rich (wongrs), who is going to organize this years Bow River Cleanup? I am certainly available to help with any organizing, but I have a very busy summer planned so I would need significant help, and someone with contacts at all the local shops for prizes and whatnot. I have a few contacts, but need one of you long time Bow boys to help out.
  12. I have 2, a 5 wt TiCr and a 3 wt Finesse. My son has a 5 wt Signature series. Good rods, good price, great warranty.
  13. Hey LK, You back yet? Love to hear about the rest of the trip.
  14. Al, Sweet man! A couple of them look like the would roll instead of swim!!
  15. 26" would be considered a BIG brown on the bow, or pretty much anywhere else. Very nice job!
  16. Double duty? What do you mean. BassPro will be cheaper here for the same reason they are cheaper back home. Massive buying power and inventory control.
  17. 7'6" 3 wt, 9 ft 5 wt, 9 ft 8 wt. Picked the 8 over a 7 because of saltwater needs. Vast majority of my fishing is with the 5, but can't wait to fish the 3 wt this summer! I did play around with a fast 6 wt a couple of weeks ago and loved bombing out a pretty heavy nymph rig with it. Trying to avoid buying it, because at some point it gets kinda silly.
  18. I thought it was a choice hijack! How often does one get a chance to drop a Frank Zappa reference? I would have quoted from "Catholic Girls", but couldn't figure out how to work in "with a tiny little mustache....."
  19. Not sure what a Benninger Electric Guitar is. I did a google search on Benninger Guitar, and this thread was the 2nd hit. Maybe Maxwell can help with Benninger lessons? Just teasing! Your "I'm a wammy girl" quote put a Fank Zappa song in my head that I can't get out: "Joe's Garage" It wasn't very large There was just enough room to cram the drums In the corner over by the Dodge It was a fifty-four With a mashed up door And a cheesy little amp With a sign on the front said "Fender Champ" And a second hand guitar It was a Stratocaster with a whammy bar
  20. I was absolutely amazed he pulled Kipper. I've tried to come up with a football analogy and I think I have it: Pulling your #1, All-Star QB in the second half of a playoff game because his receivers keep dropping the ball. Brutal freakin' decision. By the way, all us American's are in on the Hockey conspiracy to allow southern and west coast teams to win the cup. Wait a minute, no we aren't. Basically because very few of us give a crap (I'm a notable exception).
  21. Bass Pro, Gander Mtn., Cabela's, all the same thing. Great selection, HUGE stores. Kid in a candy store kinda stuff. The saltwater selection in Bass Pro was really good in Texas, so I would imagine they will be able to adapt to the north. That said, I always liked Russell's and Wholesale. A little understaffed, but who isn't? Any retail store here is going to struggle with staff over the foreseeable future.
  22. Nice Hydro. Awesome pics, and some cool photoshop work!
  23. Sounds like a blast Tiana! Between you in Europe and LK catching reds in Fla., I'm starting to feel a bit green. Oh well, skiing was great today.
  24. Lawrence, You are KILLING me! Wat to go brutha! Schools can get up to an acre in size. Look for the big mud trail! Ask you guide if topwater poppers will work.if so, you aint seen nuthin yet! Brent, can't get seasick inshore. Wave frequency too high. Its the big deep rollers that kill ya!
  25. If that's what you kids are calling it these days. And I'm sure it wasn't a pretty sight.
