How about catgut? I think the reason you can't find a time for fluoro to degrade is it never degrades. -
Some Really Good Stuff - Berkley Vanish
reevesr1 replied to kungfool's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Mike, Do you mean from an environmental standpoint or knot standpoint? If you mean environmental, mono takes 600 yrs (very quick internet research) to degrade. So in any real sense, is essentially biodegradable as well. Every piece of mono that has been lost in the water is still there (unless someone was building in 700 yrs ago, unlikely I think). No different than fluoro. -
I think I'm finally smart enough to stay out of this argument, but I did like the quote above. People don't have "opinions" on Global Warming, it is part of their belief system. You can change someone's opinion, but like firefrog said, changing their belief is near impossible. I certainly include myself in that.

Some Really Good Stuff - Berkley Vanish

I have Vanish 10# and P-Line 6#. I like the vanish a bit better as I think it ties better knots, but that could just be the difference in diameter between the 10 and 6. I've been using it for years in saltwater, but more in the 12 and 15 lb class. Love it, have for years. Not a bad gimmick. -
Thanks for posting that Brian. Pretty impressive list of firsts! Gives me something to look forward to.

Read the posts. It was said in this thread. Also said multiple times on the radio on the call in shows. Really, people just use this excuse to rationalize what they KNOW to be wrong. This is a manifestation of the "winning at all costs" mentality, that shows us at our absolute worst, IMHO. It is by no means unique to hockey. Players almost always stick up for other players when talking to others. I won't say that their opinions don't matter, it's just that I don't think we ever really get their true opinions. In this case, I think THE MAN made a huge mistake.

I was at Bullshooters yesterday morning. I had to speak to a customer, so tried to find a quiet corner. As I am talking on the phone, two young ladies walk up to the table I'm standing by. Both take off their tops so that the body paint can be applied. The guy standing next to me talking on the phone says: "I'm having a hard time focusing right now." No kidding, I thought. Don't see that every day. I also know exactly where I will be standing next Bullshooters at 8:15 AM. With a camera phone.

Agreed about speed on everyone but Bert. All signs the last couple of years indicate that Bert is done. Anybody remember watching him in the last Olympics? That and the fact he takes no responsibility for anything drives me crazy. Listen to his interviews. It's always "I didn't get enough ice time" or "I certainly produced with Getzlaf and Perry." *hit, I can barely skate and could get a point or two with those guys. No indication in the last couple of years he can do it on a second line. You going to put him on the first line in Calgary? Really? And all the apologists for him drive me mental. I don't give a crap what the situation was, what he did should have warranted permanent suspension, or jail. No matter what Steve Moore did, nobody had that coming. If you believe so, give you're head a shake. I have no idea whether or not Bertuzzi is a bad guy, but it sure looks to me like he very well may be. So in a hockey sense, odds are it won't work (how often do guys come back from 2 bad years), and his character is questionable, at best. He will go the way of most reclamation projects: as trade fodder near the deadline for some other team foolish enough to believe he will rediscover lost glory. That or he'll get hurt again. I'm a life-long Cowboys fan. Grew up with them and remember when they were the underdogs. While I still consider them my team, their addition of Pacman and Tank Johnson show me they are willing to sacrifice everything to win. It makes me think less of them, not more. I feel the same now about Calgary. I'll pull for them, but I think less of them.

They just got slower. Good luck with that.

Yeah, but my father would have said the same thing about any high end rod, reel, tube, vest, etc., etc. If you've got the money, why not I guess. -
Bring 'em on!! I'll bring Greenpeace to some of our ops in Ft. Mac since they love it so much, and I can teach PETA all I've learned recently about how to handle fish!

Just trying to do my bit to combat global warming Max! Now I have to emit more carbon to stick hooks in defenseless little fishies.

The Flygirls First Bullies...(my Oldest Daughter)...

Brent, I've caught fish much larger than the bullies pictured in this post, out of a boat. Picking them up is generally a requirement, or netting which I'm not sure doesn't cause as much harm from the mesh than from any organ issues. So how are these supposed to be handled? This argument is somewhat silly. I've seen 10,000 pictures in magazines of fish being handled in this way. I really think way too much is being made of this, and it got way too personal. Discussions can be had without douche bag getting tossed about! That said, I have way less issue with you bringing this up. You contribute significantly to this board, so have earned the right (that's not the right word, but it will do) to bring up issues like this. There are many others on this board who contribute in many ways who also have no qualms about bringing up fish handling issues based on a picture. While I think it needs to be done judiciously, it is not that much of an issue. I however do have issues with people who contribute basically nothing other than pointing out the perceived mistakes of others. While I would never say they don't have a "right" to post, I will say their opinion is meaningless to me (as I'm quite sure mine is to them.) -

I think I shall call them "The Fun Suckers" because they like to suck the fun out of everything. -

I have 3 kids. All of them were tossed up in the air as babies and toddlers, unnaturally putting their internal organs under tension and compression many times over. None of them died, but now that they are older, they can be a pain in the ass sometimes. Hope I didn't cause that. I catch rainbows. They jump in the air, sometimes they go vertical and twist around and stuff. Is that different from holding one vertical? Should I hold my rod down to stop them from jumping to save stress on their organs? Sorry for the sarcasm, but sometimes this crap just gets carried too far. I am no fish biologist, nor do I play one on TV, but I would bet the money in my wallet right now that Jeff did not damage a single fish when he held it. (Not that I have much money in my wallet, but if I did, I'd still bet it.) -
Great idea Osprey! Meet you there!!

Beedhead, Nice fish. Man, I'm getting tired of the rest of this garbage. Don't touch the gills, don't hold 'em by the belly, don't lay 'em on the grass, don't lay 'em on a rock, don't use a net, don't lay 'em on a net, don't lay 'em on a pontoon boat, don't land 'em by hand, don't use a big SJW. Blah, freakin' blah, freakin blah. Maybe we should just quit fishing. That way we'll never hurt the little darlings. I'm cutting off all my hooks as we speak. Edit: Jeff, don't let the BS stop you from posting. You want to take a pic, take as many as you want. You show your passion through your posts. That is worth 100X over the negativity that seems to get spawned far too often (which I admit to participating in from time to time). -
I'm sorry, did somebody say something? I think I must have dozed off there for a second.

Tried to go to my neighborhood run this morning only to find access to 194 Ave shut down for construction of the new Chaparral Valley subdivision and/or Blue Devil Golf Course. Crap!! Used to be 15 minutes door to fishing. Now much longer. And it doesn't look like they will restore access anytime soon. They are completely tearing up the road. May have to talk to Troutlover about clandestine entry points! Crap. Crap. Crap.

As one who has fished with a surf rod, I can attest to it's "fun-ness"! Don't limit yourself there young Brent!! But you are right about one thing, while I'm sure big Kings pull like all get out, and can have lots of current to use to their advantage, tuna are in a class by themselves as far as fight is concerned. They are basically solid muscle. Like comparing a trout to a bonefish. Both are really fun to catch, but no comparing the fight! That said, I sure wish I was going to Alaska to catch Salmon or South Carolina to catch tuna. Either one will do!!

I tie it from time to time, both with flies and in saltwater to let the lure or fly "swim" more naturally. The concept is certainly sound. That said, I gotta say I've never really noticed a difference in catch rates and always default back to the old clinch knot.

Alberta Energy Savings?
reevesr1 replied to SilverDoctor's topic in General Chat - Not Fishing Related (NFR)
Isn't that the same as negative option billing? Ie, your cable company sends you an option to increase your plan, with a line in the text that says if you don't reply, they will switch you to the higher plan. That used to happen in the states, and it is now illegal. This refund check thing sounds like a variation on that theme. Illegal? Don't know. But again, it speaks directly to their unethical nature. I have no issue with the concept of locking in a rate. In fact, it's good business for them to market more aggressively when rates are high. That said, you can be aggressive (send out lots of people in this case) without being unethical. -
I looked through Taco's knots, and I don't see a simple loop. I did look and can't find it. Very easy to tie however. Step 1: Tie a simple overhand loop in the line about 6" from the end. Step 2: Slip the end of the line through the eye of the fly Step 3: Slip the end of the line through the loop tied in step 1 Step 3: Tie a overhand loop around the line in front of the original loop Step 4: Lubricate and cinch down. Simple. Wish I had some pictures for you! Here is a very similar one, tied exactly the same except substitute my step 3 and 4 for his. Though this knot looks easy too......Non-slip loop knot
