  1. Man, I gotta get my wife in the game. I've played golf all my life, do I get any stinkin' golf clubs? A pontoon boat for fishing? No and No. Oh well, she's given my 19 wonderful years and 3 beautiful kids. I guess that'll do! Happy Fathers Day All!!
  2. BBT, Thanks for posting this. I was looking for a gift to give clients at a little fishing event I am hosting. Called Glenn and voila, issue taken care of. Getting each of them a stillwater kit. Thanks for the idea.
  3. Lynn, Desperate men are easy to profit from in so many ways. We are pretty simple creatures. Dangle shiny, pretty things in front of us and we'll take two please, cost is no object!! Oh if only fishing were so easy to figure out. Or women.
  4. I bet I lead the pack in posts from the blackberry while on the train. A fishing and technology geek am I.
  5. Lynn, Perhaps you could get together with PrairieCreekFlyer's wife and put on a class? I could tie my wife up and make her attend. I thing LK and Birchy might be interested as well? I would pay and I'm sure they would as well. Nice little home business for ya! More time for the grandbaby. PrairieCreekFlyer, we can leave your wifes brother out of this, regardless of his opinions on the outdoors.
  6. Glenbow, You make me laugh! I don't think cutties are smart enough to understand karma, so my bet is you are safe. Paris wouldn't care.
  7. Glenbow. I don't think they make Schlitz anymore. Oh to be young again and drinking Schlitz Malt Liquor for the alcohol content! Makes one want to go shoot a carp.
  8. Nice cuttie! MissinTheBow and I fished it yesterday. I hooked a fish on the forth cast from my Pontoon on a big honking Bull Trout streamer. Saw the fish come up and put the streamer in the area 4 times before he picked it up. Felt like a pretty nice fish, lost him because I'm a moron (I let the line get a little slack in my zeal to get him on the reel). That was the day for me. MissinTheBow hooked a few with a couple of bust offs and one other lost fish. Frustrating day, but we certainly should have landed some. Saw lots of fish, including one awesome bull that followed MTBs streamer to the bank. He was massive!
  9. My dad was a fisherman. By that, I don't just mean a guy who caught fish, though he certainly did that. He was somewhat of a ledgend in the Galveston Bay area. He had a magazine article written about him when he was 18 and the picture at NASA of things to do in South Texas was of my dad and one of his bestfriends with a huge stringer of fish. But that's not really mean when I say he was a fisherman, it goes deeper. To put it as simply as I can, it means he lived his life looking at each day and each person from the perspective of "what can I learn from this". And he took a story from each encounter. And man, could he tell a story. It made him a true joy to be around as he held court. If I could pick any one of my dad's traits to emulate, it would be that. We went fishing all the time. I have more stories than I could ever relate. To tell the truth, I can't think of any bad stories. But my fondest fishing story of my dad is a trip we didn't take. When it became apparent this time last year that he was dying, all his family and friends gathered to say goodbye. He had stomach cancer and had lost 50 lbs or so because he literally couldn't eat. So he was a bit weak to say the least. Even so, he entertained everyone with all the old fishing stories that we had all heard many times before. All his old friends showed up (and would pace outside the front door afraid to go in. It was incredibly moving). One of his buddies put together a dvd with old fishing picture. I can't describe how fantastic this was. Here is the fishing story, finally. My son and nephew were in his bedroom talking to him. When they came out, dad called for my mom. She came out of the room laughing and crying, much like me right now. She said he asked for a ham sandwich because he was going to take the boys fishing. Now we all knew there was no way this waas happening. He could not stand up for more than 5 minutes. But he was completely serious when he said it. My dad was a fisherman.

    El Toro

Going there tomorrow. I would take one of his leetle friends as well. I could call him El Toro Pequeño. If he has any cousins in the Rainbow variety, I'd take them too!
  11. I saw a big report on them a couple of years ago. They are considering installing, if you can believe it, an electrostatic barrier on the Mississippi to halt them. But after watching them suckers jump, can't see how that would stop them! Also, as a dyed in the wool redneck myself, I take great pride in watching my countrymen develop unique solutions to complex problems!
  12. Grizz, Always looking for a place to bring the wife. Maligne would be perfect as she's always up for a trip to Jasper! Can you rent canoes there (I assume so). Is it good all summer?
  13. I did not know you could veiw a profile. Thanks for alerting me, I think. You have 54. I have 12. I wonder why? One is a 25 year old female who likes deep pools, warm summer nights, and tans and one is a 47 year old guy who like all those things as well, but less people care On the subject of girls who fish, if you check out the picture post from my trip to South Texas we went with a female guide as well, website below. All kidding aside, she is an absolute fishing machine and I would go with her any time. I have no doubt that April can bring them in as well. It is a tough business for a female. Too many guys think they are a novelty act and make inappropriate jokes, like on my previous post. Sorry about that. http://www.skinnywateradventures.com/pages/Capt_Trish.htm
  14. I did not even notice the condition of the fish. Too funny. Do you think he will just mount it as is? Cheaper that way, if a bit smellier.
  15. Oh come on! A picture of a perfectly coiffed lady angler and the link in the post is www.fishingwithrod.com? And did you check the pose? Her name is April? You sure it isn't Mercedes or Chastity? Are you kidding? I can't even make the joke its so easy. Its like someone just put it up on a tee for me! Swing batter.... April, if you are reading this, I don't mean a word. I'm just going for a laugh. If you are offended, I apologize. There is a contest we are starting and you get extra points if you take someone new fishing. Would you like to fish with me? I have a new waterproof camera..... Birchy, did you make all this up?
  16. Wow!! Could you imagine that pig making a downstream run? Talk about running down the bank. Did you notice the quote: "I'm going to put it in my house, down in the basement, wherever my wife lets me.." Perfect! My wife would make me put it in the garage!
  17. I like it. But we're kinda drifting away from ass and boobs (man, it sure amuses me to type ass and boobs, I think I'm still 12). Any way to incorporate experience, or lack of it (I'm talking fly fishing experience here)? Say extra points if it is the first of a species on a body of water. So say, if it is your first cuttie on the Oldman, you get a point? Or a personal best gets a point or two? Or if you get to see someones ass or boobs.....how many points for that???
  18. All this talk about ass and boobs has left me a bit breathless. I have an idea brewing about ass, boobs and a photo contest? I am getting a new Olympus waterproof camera and the possibilities are fairly limitless. Oops, wrong forum for that one.... MTB, I've seen you in action and my ass is better than yours! Maybe my boobs as well. Seriously, I like the multi-species contest. It would allow many of us to fish for species we may not typically target. I am a champ at catching suckers on the crow. For you nymph clinic grads out there, how about we put together a little contest ourselves. PM me if you are interested. If I get enough responses, I will start a post and try to come up with some rules.
  19. Hawgstoppah, Interesting you mention one such place at Southland dog walk area. It's even tougher when the river is high! From what I understnd, one could hook and loose many big fish there, necessitating a post such as this! Greg, I caught a nice trout at Janzens from the cliffs a couple of weeks ago. I could not chase him due to the danger of falling in, but I did end up pretty high up the cliff while my partner netted him about 30 yds straight downstream of me. Though getting up there was only an attempt to chase and not to just get above him, it is interesting that I landed the fish even though he was almost 90 deg degrees below me. I will commit that to memory and use that tactic as well when the opportunig presents itself. Not to steal the thread (but I started it so I can pretty much do what I want), but I wanted to give props to all the experts on this board. I have been posting advice/asking questions on various message boards for many years. Usually no more than once a month or so as I was more a lurker. Obviously that is not the case here. You guys have a pretty special thing going. The quality of the advice, and the willingness of a number of true experts to share info is pretty much unrivaled from anywhere else I've been. Thanks to everyone!
  20. Did the buoys break during this run of high water? If so, my bet it is pretty tough to replace them when the river is high. If they have been broken for awhile, then the city deserves a bit of a slap. However, it certainly doesn't diminish the foolishness of not wearing a life jacket when floating a river the size of the bow anytime, much less during runoff. I've never floated the Bow up there myself, but aren't there lots of signs warning of the wier? From the news report these guys just moved here this week from Montreal. All prayers out to their families.
  21. Hey Jimbow, The comment wasn't actually directed at you, or any one person in particular. I don't think the fish should be considered a world record either, but doesn't taint the accomplishment. But you gotta admit, there was a bit of energy directed at the fish, and comparing it negatively to catching big fish on the river. I agree that they are apples and oranges. More than agree actually. My point is, I guess, that why even compare at all? They had a great accomplishment on its own. Doesn't have to be compared with anything.
  22. esleech, Take me to the Brookies and I'll fly you to the Czech Republic and buy you all the beer you want!
  23. I've caught 40+ lb redfish on 10 lb test. Trust me when I say they struggle plenty. All a matter of patience and steady pressure. The biggest I caught on 10 lb probably weighed 45 lb and took a little over an hour to land. I have no doubt I could have done the same on 6 lb. test, but who has the time?? Also you put massive amounts of stress on the fish fighting them that long and it can be difficult to revive them. Anyway, don't equate line strength with fight of the fish. No doubt 6 lb test could land that fish whether he fought hard or not if the fishermen knew what they were doing. And judging by the fact they seem to be big fish specialists, my bet is they know exactly what they are doing. Also, I guess I don't really understand the need to belittle the accomplishment. Brood stock or not, it's a pretty impressive fish. Also, not knowing much about Sask, just how many places do they have to fish for rainbows? Not all that much flowing water around capable of supporting rainbows around is there? So if you are stuck fishing in ponds and lakes, might as well target the big boys yes? And they caught the biggest/baddest boy (or girl in this case) ever. Good on 'em!
  24. So, its 20 yards, not 20 feet on really big round loose rocks. Lots of tripping and slipping, and I'm not as spry as I used to be! From now on, I will try to keep the rod up when they jump. That has been what I have done in the salt my whole life really (typically the fish is further away when jumping and the line heavy enough to limit the chance of breaking off), so going back to it is easy! And when I say i don't really pressure them when they are running, don't get me wrong. I keep it plenty tight, as I am more than aware I have a barbless hook. I just don't try to coerce them into doing anything else when they are running hard and try not to get myself in a hurry. Drag set loose enough to let him have his "legs", but not so loose that there is too little pressure. I really believe my mistake has more to do with the 45deg angle thing. It did not cross my mind, but makes loads of sense. Most of my fish have been lost on downstream runs, ergo.... It's very wierd feeling like a novice when doing something you have done your whole life. I'm used to being the one giving the advice, not the other way around, so I probably feel too much of a need to explain myself to show I'm not a total nincompoop. And as I said in the first post, fighting the fish, paticularly big ones, is the part I would not have expected trouble with. It could very well be that my "experience" is actually working against me here. Can't wait for the river to drop a bit to try this out! I truly appreciate all the help.
  25. Sorry for the hijack. That is one big honkin' rainbow!
