  1. I knew you were going to get me for that. I should start another thread, but I'm too lazy!!!! But it is a post about perspective right? Just giving everyone some.
  2. Yeah, I was going to mention that as well. They actually elected Edwin Edwards for govenor for a third term (I think) just after he was released from jail for stealing from the state during his 1st and 2nd term. The devil you know, I guess. Also, it was pretty funny how the sheriff always had the biggest house in any town while on a government salary! In many ways, they are more corrupt than some third world countries. If you don't pay off certain local authorities, you cannot do business. They sure can cook however!
  3. Stupid Baseball!! I really wish I could make it. Have fun everyone.
  4. Dave, I sort of agree, but what if your family has lived there for hundreds of years? Hurricanes are a fact of life, but the last real big storm to hit the New Orleans coast, pre Katrina, was Betsy in like 1965. I lived on the gulf coast until I was 20 and we were never hit (well, once when I was 3 but I don't remember so it doesn't count). As to New Orleans, with proper flood control it could be rebuilt. The problem is, as you put it above, money. They started the flood control system post Betsy. So 40 years ago. It still isn't finished, because of lack of political will. Everyone is real gungho for the first several years. Then the money earmarked for flood control ends up fixing roads, building bridges, financing govenors reelection campaigns, etc. That being said, the city will be rebuilt for political much more so than economic reasons. It will take awhile however.
  5. Here is a link: http://www.gulfmex.org/crp1002.html We were on Breton Island. Much has changed since then due to Katrina and Rita. The shark fishing was meant to be an afternoon diversion between the morning and evening speckled trout and redfish activity. The plan was to toss out a couple of big rods, set up some chairs on the beach, drink beer and shoot our guns (just kidding esleech!). As it turned out, you would have a hookup within 1 minute of the bait hitting the water. It was unreal. We probably hooked 20 sharks in 4 hours and caught 10 or so. Smallest say 50", biggest probably 75. These guys, except for the big bull in the last picture, are aerial fighters. Wish we had gotten a shot of one airborne, but we all had slow digital cameras and never did. I did hook one big shark. Not sure how big, but I broke him off on purpose before he spooled me. Never slowed down. He would have had to have been 200 lb plus, and almost certainly a bull shark. Did I mention this is in 4 ft of water and we were wading? We also fish for reds in the exact same spot. You have to pay very close attention to your stringer, because the sharks will literally take fish right off of it. The rule is to only use slip knots, or some type of quick release device on the stringer in case something much bigger than you with nast teeth wants your fish! This used to be a yearly trip for a group of us, but we are waiting for the islands, and services on the mainland to redevelop post Katrina. Should be awesome next time we go.
  6. Babe? You mean that little chihuahua from Wisconsin, or Minnesota, or one of those tiny Northern states? I guess a guy as vertically challenged as Paul would need a smallish pet. I bet Babe (or is it Blue, I can't remember) would make pretty good shark bait. Dave, That pic is from Breton Island, about a 45 min boat ride from Venice. Did you ever get a chance to fish the Islands when you were down there? Once everything opens back up again (5 yrs or so?) we'll be making another trip. I think the fly rod could be very successful down there.
  7. Dave, Thanks for all the pics. I'm starting to think my trip to Montana for the trailer needs to be at least a 4 day trip! I've alse been thinking about a waterproof camera. The release pic closes the deal. All I need now is a line of credit. esleech, We would never use guns on each other. Just Grizzly's. And maybe foreigners. Any reports to the contrary are just propoganda.
  8. I'm 7'2" tall, and at least 6'6" while squatting. The shark in the picture is 10 feet long, at least. OK, so he's 70" or so. Just wanted an excuse to post. Fish was released unharmed. We were using big Whitefish for bait. The rod in this pic is a 3 wt. Promise.
  9. Dave, Just kidding buddy! I really don't want to marry you either, though you do have some wonderful traits!
  10. I think there are surgeons who can take care of that little issue. If he liked Americans more, maybe I'd marry him! My first wife would understand. I mean come on, the guy can fish AND drink coffee at the same time, has the internet directly in his brain, and has a fairly well developed sense of humor. What guy could resist.
  11. Lynn, Trying very hard to avoid all the replies about you getting a pair. Barely able to contain myself. A couple (no pun intended) of very obvious directions I could go. Good luck with getting the pants! My pocketbook cannot support them (again, no pun intended).
  12. SJW, Been busy with work. Wish I had seen this more real time for the gut laugh I got out of it! Seriously though, I have some relatives in the Mortuary business. I think they have some, might be some bullet holes in 'em though! I plan to drive down to Montana to buy a tent trailer and fish a bit as well. I will be with my son and wife probably, so a guide may be out. Any suggestions?
  13. OK, how did you think of that? I am really starting to believe are a cyborg, or at least the manifestation of the wired up guys from SciFi books. Birchy, do you have to get your rings built at a casing supply company?
  14. Watch it esleech or I'll send an ICBM screaming towards you! I used to work on Submarines and still have some high level contacts!
  15. Get a heavy anchor as well. I have an old fluted 5 lb and it would not hold at K-Lakes or at one of the man made lakes in 20K+ wind. Not sure how heavy to go. Suggestions?
  16. Wow. That's all I need! I can almost see the divorce papers being filed. I think I may have to put that site on the blocked list.
  17. Can you believe it only sold for $61.00?? I buy a lot of stuff on eBay. Wish I had seen that one! Pacreseltoro, Love the name of the post. Very clever. I was going to ask why she wasn't selling the rod as well, but that may evoke too many memories of Loreena Bobbit for some...
  18. Ok finished and Mrs. rickr is asleep. Now what?? Happy fathers day to you too!
  19. Nice job Glen. Looks like a blast. Capped off with 6 big bulls in an hour? Very, very nice.
  20. I pick lump it! Things done today: Went to son's baseball game at 10 am. Cancelled. No, really. Went to local lake in defiance of the weather. Froze and quit after 45 fruitless minutes. Rearranged/reorganized all fly boxes and vest. Realized that I don't know what about 25% of the flies I own are called, including 75% of the dries. Watched the US Open. Confirmed what I have long suspected, that Tiger ain't all that. He'll only win 22 majors or so. All you have to do to keep him from lifting a heavy cup or plate at the end of 4 rounds is to not let him be in the lead after 3. Easy peazy. I knew he'd never live up to the hype. Mopped floor and vacuumed upstairs. Happy Fathers Day! But really, I banked major points with the wife for this. Looked out the window. I can usually see the mountains, but not today. The sad part is I know when I can see them again there will be way more white. To quote the immortal Bill Murray in Stripes "and then depression set in".
  21. Lance, I just bought a Outcast 9 ft. I'm 6'2" as well, and a svelt 190. They are pretty big boats, so hiking very far with it would be pretty tough, IMHO. It weighs like 70 lbs. But they do break down to manageable pieces. As to the rough water, I can't imagine that the waves on K Lakes could get rough enough to roll you, unless the wind was really huge. A 9 ft is plenty suitable for the Bow. The only problem I have found in wind is that you sit so high up that you are basically a wind sock. You have to really work hard to row against heavy wind with the oars. But for the most part, I've been propelling myself with my fins. And if it doesn't rain, you won't get wet at all. Inflating is pretty quick. I went to K Lakes with MTB. I have a foot pump and he has a doulb acting one. Get the double acting pump. I've only used mine 3 times, but I really like it. I recommend it very highly.
  22. Oops. Double post.
  23. So this weekend was always sort of a write off for me going to the Mountain streams due to baseball tournaments. But the plan was to hit a local lake this afternoon after the games to do some Chironomid technique testing, rain or shine. But not rain, +7C, and 30 KM/hr winds! Isn't it Jun 17? When does summer come here, at Tuesday in July?? Houston is +27. That's a proper late Spring day (on the downside, its raining there too!) Looking forward to better weather, please, pretty please....
  24. Face the facts Glen. You have no chance in this. Its a wired up world, and I think he has an internet connection in his brain!
