  1. Speaking of tube flies, here are some of the sites I like to visit that deal with this... http://steelheadalleyflytying.blogspot.com/ http://www.canadiantubeflies.com/ http://troutbeads.com/ http://www.tubeflies.com/ http://www.tubeflytech.com/ http://www.eumertube.com/abcs.php http://www.eumertube.com/ABCsOfConeheads.php Note in this last link how the Eumer rivet type coneheads push more water giving a better movement and retaining body fullness too.
  2. Was just on the Sport Fishing on the Fly site and there was a boatman tie there that was interesting: http://www.sfotf.ca/home/2009/10/13/tawnys...er-request.html no graphics or photos yet however for this one
  3. I have seen nothing in BC or Alberta that comes close to the way it has impacted streams in north and south islands in New Zealand. This is in spite of lots of precautions. Google it. The BC northeastern Region was the first in the province to express concern on the Peace River, however little has been done to follow anything up. While in the west Kootenay this summer we noticed it in the Columbia and were not impressed. Never noticed in in our drifts of the Elk River from Sparwood to near Fernie and beyond. yet
  4. You might even be surprised where some flies are tied. Some decent quality ones are being tied in volume in Mexico and are for sale in BC and AB. Doubt you could tell the difference.
  5. For the Intruders a person might do well tying tube flies instead? I am about to go that route when the materials arrive...and if this weather persists...
  6. No pctures handy but spent time tying doc spratelys, carey specials, various microleeches and a few chironomids. I liked the photos of thoes wets as well as the intruders...the latter are hard on material it looks like, however I got the Nor-vise tube fly option and a decent supply of some of the right stuff...just waiting for a shipment to try tying those. Only issue here is I know this may well lead to a real need to buy a spey rod....to partly replace my 8 weight Sage...
  7. The spring season will see small waterboatmen usually, but in the fall especially on lakes however also some streams, they have grown up to 1/2 inch in size and I normally go with small sizes like 14 to 16 hooks in spring but go with larger ones in the fall to reflect that. Depends on what I see them eating if I can ascertain that.
  8. Definitely only water boatmen. Thanks. Interesting comments here.
  9. Thanks for the response. This one is similar to the one I have used the most as well other than the use of biots for the legs.
  10. I am interested in knowing just how many versions some of you pack in your kit this time of the year. I have several tied using a pheasant fiber shell with peacock herl underbody...some have an epoxy coat on the shell some not two different ones out of foam one brown with a glass bead and one with a bead of crystal flash with peacock herl surrounding it either brown or black underbelly one has a black foam back and peacock crystal chenille underneath On another topic someone says they had success with a black backed/yellow underbody one some with black legs, some olive color, sometimes sillilegs sometimes black superfloss What I have found is not as well organized enough that one might be better prepared for this event...
  11. I would report that to whomever the Alberta Waste Managers are in government there to investigate asap.
  12. The steelhead I have caught in the summer and fall in the Bulkley, Skeena/Kispiox/Copper/etc area averaged 8 to 20 pounds with my largest ever being 24. One was caught a short time ago on the Kalum that weighed around 30 or so according to one of the guides over there. In BC we do have some rivers where steelhead spend more time as youngsters and become imprinted on insects both surface and underwater. A great river to fish is the Bulkley in this regard. Google it for details on fish sizes and so on. From what I have seen in the US, there are some great looking waters, however I have not fished any of them and perhaps some time down the road I will finally get a chance to see what the fuss is all about. In the meantime, I have barely scratched the surface of the many rivers here in BC after living here for 66 years. We may yet become snowbirds...
  13. Conservative seasons that use catch and release are good ideas. We should resist any moves for closures for most areas since it has been a long term observation that once a closure is in place people tend to assume all is well, no more monitoring happens and as industry impacts increase over time an unused fishery has less value and weight in mitigating impacts.

    Full Sink Line

Caught several large rainbows in a lake around 100 mile house in BC in 64 feet of water using a chromie this spring. Full sink fast dropping line in order there. After about a couple weeks with the start of the big mayfly hatches these bows were still there but the bite was limited as well as their numbers. Did very well indeed using intermediate line then. Later was using floating line, 15 foot leader and indicator and did well once more. Keep an open, analytical mind and be observant and open to trying new ways.
  15. Caught an 7.9 pound rainbow today, and although I weighed it, I never measured him.

    Full Sink Line

I have used floating lines for this with a 12 foot leader and a fluorcarbon tippet long enough to get as low as needed. Is that what you do as well?
  17. The software is in version 1.09 beta, and while it may not be the final product but an evolving one, after going through it, I think it is a shame more people do not seem to be using and supporting it. The peer to peer fly data trading idea is also a good one that will only be brought back in the event people use the software and encourage the author. Questions and comments are welcomed.
  18. Nice streamers. Some people say that red eyes may draw more strikes. I am not sure myself but that is what I go with anyway when either salmon fishing in rivers or the ocean. Likely matters little anyway. Just ge them where the fish live.
  19. As a guideline if nothing else, go to the Hyde url and look at their used prices before you start. I think Clack and the others may have something similar but I always found the used prices interesting esp with their fully overhauled trailers and guarrantee.
  20. Look like good ones Wolfie. For your weighted one how many wraps were you using?
  21. Try here for the Deceiever pattern you were looking for. It worked for me. http://www.charliesflyboxinc.com/flybox/pr...fm?parentID=166
  22. I bought my Hard As Nails at Walmart for cheap. Went to the Home Hardware and bought the smallest container of straight acetone i could find. As someone mentioned, go slow with thinning. Experimenting with one drop at a time worked for me.
