I have the Outcast 9 ft as well, and bought it at the FH on sale last year. It wasn't overly expensive (550 I think) and is very stable. It also has a sturdy construction, and you can mount a small trolling moter on it if you want. You sit out of the water in a comfortable seat and I have never gotten wet at all. Make sure you get a pair of long oars, it makes rowing a much less taxing event. Double action pump is a must as well. An anchor should also be shomething to consider. I wouldn't personally take it out in very windy conditions. I'm not afraid of it tipping, but rather having to row back against the wind.

I see this kind of auction on ebay from time to time. Jaded ex's selling off stuff cheap. Anyone remember the guys who sold the wedding dress? He actually put it on to model it. That was a good one. -

Flies For Grayling In Bear Pond
admin replied to fishinmagician's topic in General Chat - Fly Fishing Related
Chironomids like zebra midge and sno-cones work well. If they are taking surface flies, try the Griffiths gnats and CDC & Elks. -
Nice work Glen. Keep up the great work.

Midnight Green It's a modification of Monte Smith's Midnight Blue. I think it would be a great little stillwater fly. the original is tied with a blue bead and has a few other differences. Recipe: Hook: Mustad 4XL #8 Bead: 6/0 Green Glass Bead Tail: Black Marabou With with a couple strands of light blue flash flanking each side Body: 3-4 black Ostrich Herls Rib: 2 Strands of Blue Krystal Flash Hackle: Natural peacock black schlappen

That's a pretty cool idea. Got a pic of a completed fly?

Wow, that's great. It might be worth it to have kids just for those perks.

Spey is huge in BC and Ontario right now. I can see it being a great casting method for some of Alberta's bigger rivers and those boxed in by the greens. It's definatly something we can add if there is some support for it.
-
Brownstone, do you live in Ontario, or do you just get out there a lot?
-
I would say it's a bit of overkill for Pike 10wt would be as high as I would go. That's not to say it won't work well for pike. It will give you a bit more backbone for casting big pike flies. It would however be a perfect saltwater rod as it has been mentioned already.

I'm not sure how I missed this post, but bravo on the range and quality of the shots.

Sounds like a great idea. The Alberta Backroads maps are great for finding small creeks to fish. Make sure your prepared for a bear encounter when you're out in the wilderness. Bangers and Spray are good to have on hand. There was also a more detailed map book put out a couple years back, but I can't remember the name. They were selling it at the 2005 FFE in calgary though. -

The carp in Alberta ponds / lakes are likely grass carp, and they are triploid. That means that there is only a 1% chance they will be able to reproduce. They are used to control vegitation, and there are a few hatcheries that raise them just for that purpose. I'm not sure if they are the same species, but I don't think they are. I think this is already in place in IL. It's a pretty long barrier - 500M or more. The fish swim into it and turn back. there isn't any chance they couple leap over it. The reason the jump is because of the engine noise. When there aren't any boats around, it pretty quiet, but get a noisy moter boat, and it's a flying circus.

That's a sweet wing in there Dave. So, you got your tying table set up or what....
-
my thoughs exactly. These invasive carp are getting out of hand in some parts, like this one. I think they are gonna need a bigger bow and maybe a gun.

I'm a fan, but have not watched the last couple seasons - Waiting for the boxes, but I hear that most people were really let down by the final episode. I need to sit down and watch it beginning to end.
-
I've caught quite a few stickle backs and even Fathead minnows on the fly last year.
-
Actually I do like the idea of having to tags species throughout the season. Alberta has a pretty diverse selection of species to be had on the fly. Golden Trout Brook Trout Arctic Grayling Yellow Perch Lake White Fish Rocky Mountain Whitefish Moon Eye Gold Eye Cutthroat Brown trout Bull Trout Sauger Walleye Northern Pike Burbot Lake Trout Lake Sturgeon Stonecat Bonus marks for any sucker species and minnow species (must identify). 18 Species - You would need to do a lot of traveling to get the entire range, but it would be exiting to see.

How about you have to take a picture in full gear in an unlikely palce like downtown on 3rd ave or at the bowling alley.... with a FFC logo in hand of course.
