Din Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 this is my first attempt at a stim. could use some constructive criticism please! Thanks Quote
bulltrout Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 larger hackle in both the abdomen and the thorax area (the hackle should equal the distance between the hook shank and point)...that's about all i have for ya...and if you like flashy flies, try tying some with ice dub...good tie bud... bloom Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 looks fine...couple of thoughts: 1. move the tail further back...it usually starts right above the barb. 2. The brown hackle is usually undersized, which is what you have here (regular size goes a little bit longer to reach the point). 3. For the grizzly hackle, go over-sized. It's much too small here...over-sized will help the big fly float better in the rough water. Quote
lonefisher Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Looks good...... I would echo the others bout the hackle and the tail..... but all in all a pretty nice tie Quote
hydropsyche Posted November 24, 2007 Posted November 24, 2007 Jim Slattery originated the fly (not kaufman). At least according to him. This is his tie. He said its supposed to imitate a fluttering stonefly. He makes specific notice of the bald head (no hackle) Quote
Inconnu Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 I don't always tie it with large hackle either. The shorter palmered hackle allows it to sit lower in the surface film. Quote
darbles Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Try this one Din and use good long hackle as It will move on the water more Quote
Din Posted November 25, 2007 Author Posted November 25, 2007 thanks for all the responses everyone. I find it hard to look at a pic and try to replicate flies, but rather have the fly and look at it. so I took one that I had and tried to copy it. I think I'm using the wrong type of hook but not too sure if it matters. Will still use everyones advice. so thanks, appreciate them all. The Inspiration: The attempt: Quote
regdunlop Posted November 25, 2007 Posted November 25, 2007 Good tie Din! Maybe make the wing a bit shorter but it will catch fish for sure. You are inspiring me to hit the tying bench for a few hours today. Quote
