fishinhogdaddy Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 I believe awhile ago someone mentioned they used silica for drying off flies. Being that I have about 2 lbs of the stuff in my desk that I was saving, I was wondering since they are such a large size if one would say, use a coffee grinder to pulverize them into smaller bits and how well it worked on drying out dry flies? What type of container would you use as I currently have some in a larger size pill bottle? Also would the tippet get kinked if the fly was put inside the bottle and the cap applied? Info appreciated. FHD Quote
ÜberFly Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 The commercial stuff (eg. Loon) is in little beads and the little plastic container it comes in has a little slit in it for the tippet to slide in... Never had my tippet get kinked (just don't close the lid tight)... P Quote
gmwhipple Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 frog fanny, another commercial porduct, is closer to fumed silica (which can be bought in bulk ) it is very finely divided material. i can't imagine that a coffee grinder will get it into suitable small pieces, but try it and see if it works. DaveJensen Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 Put it between two pieces of heavy cloth/leather. Pound on sidewalk with hammer for about 10 seconds. You'd have enough for a couple seasons. Cheers Quote
Taco Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 One of those cheapassed walmart coffee grinders is what I used, worked well enough. Quote
Guest 420FLYFISHIN Posted March 22, 2012 Posted March 22, 2012 YO TACO, I USE THE SAME ONE.....you know where this is going... but i would like to put some pouches of that in my streamer box. Quote
SilverDoctor Posted March 23, 2012 Posted March 23, 2012 Used the crushed version also using the coffee grinder trick, keep mine in an old 35 mm film container. I also like to have a few of these silica packs in my hardy bag, reel cases and my vest to help with moisture reduction. Quote
DonAndersen Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Guys, Desiccants need to be "revitalized" every now and then. Spread the desiccant on a oven safe pan and heat to greater than 250F for an hour or so to drive off the H20. Cool before placing back into the plastic container. I'd do it <>once per month or so. catch ya' Don Quote
birchy Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 If any of you guys ever need some of this stuff... send a PM to myself or Slingshotz, we're constantly unboxing hardware at work and just above everything has a pack or 3 of silica gel inside. Quote
maxwell Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 stick em in a coffee grinder fishinghogdaddy!! done it before it does work!!! same stuff as the white pouder!!! keeping the packs in nymph n streamer boxes is a good idea aswell!! specially for the big fly boxes! Quote
