monger Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 So I took my new 13ft rod out for its maiden voyage today. I watched a few youtube videos on casting and figured I go make an azz of myself. With a pretty good wind blowing upstream I was performing some kind of variation of the double spey. Well low and behold I caught a fish, then another and another. Best one was nice buck Brown around 23". He was stocky and dark, but jumped about 6 times. Feels pretty weird on a 13ft rod. Nice start to the spey game. I'll have to try the other side of the river next time to try the snap-t cast. Interesting to try something new...and a refreshing change from hucking worms. Quote
jdangler Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Congrat's on the fish & first time with a spey rod, nice! Spey is great fun. I was out this afternoon but got blanked, nice to hear you caught fish. Quote
toolman Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Good to hear that your first Spey outing was effective and fun. Were you swinging tips? Quote
monger Posted March 13, 2011 Author Posted March 13, 2011 I was throwing a 550 Skagit head plus about 12ft of sinking line (I just cut up an old 6wt full sink type IV line). I'm pretty sure I wasn't following protocol, but the fish didn't know it was a hack holding the rod. Now its time to start experimenting with flies I guess. Looking forward to the adventure. Quote
jayjjones11 Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Going to take that rod for fish that will make it bend? Sounds like a good first day Quote
monger Posted March 13, 2011 Author Posted March 13, 2011 Eventually wrestling something big and chrome is the plan. I haven't the first clue where to start, but I'm willing to learn. Quote
headscan Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 I'll have to try the other side of the river next time to try the snap-t cast. I'd suggest using a piece of wool instead of a fly when learning the snap-t. I've heard of people guillotining the tips of their rods with the hook while getting the hang of it. Quote
monger Posted March 13, 2011 Author Posted March 13, 2011 OK, thanks for the tip. I'm sure the first (first 50) try won't be pretty Quote
monger Posted March 13, 2011 Author Posted March 13, 2011 Well I tried some Snap-Ts today. It wasn't too painful. More trout were playing and then something bad happened to my fly. Very healthy fish My buddy got another burbot on the worm today as well. Quote
lethfisher Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Holy crap sweet pike! What did you get em on?? Quote
