  1. Just wanted to post this in hopes that whoever it was may frequent the boards and possibly learn how to handle fish. I was crossing the bridge at the Southland dog walk around 6:30pm Thursday when I noticed a guy with a fly rod playing a fish just downstream on the west side so I stopped to watch. He brought it to the net and I could see it was a fair sized trout as its head and tail were out of the net at the ends (the net was probably 14-16”). He then proceeded to walk the trout to shore (about 50’) by the gills where he laid it down on the ground for a measure. After seeing what was obviously a fish above the limit he spent the next 2 mins trying to revive the fish but I think we all know that that fish has no chance. The fish was probably out of the water for probably 2 mins with half of that time handing by his gills. I really wanted to go down and chat with the guy but he was impossible for me to get to by bike and I was on the clock. Really got me steamed though and I took it out on my bike for the next hour. Anyway, just thought I would share this in hopes that perhaps the guy might see this post and ensure that future fish caught are kept in the net in the water and promptly released especially when there is no doubt over the limit. Fish should never be handled by the gills under any circumstances. Really burns me to see that kind of $hit!
  2. Going back to your original post chiasson. Could it be that your technique is fine and your just picking up fish at the end of your drift because as you flies rise the fish think it's an emerging nymph. It's unlikely that the fish were on your line for more then a few seconds or the would have spit it so they could be just hitting it on the rise. Happens to me all the time.
  3. You are right he's usually lights out but he didn't spend all that much time fishing as he was with his son and ended up spending more time shooting gophers for the landowner. He still had a big smile on face though.
  4. They were right in front of the boat launch 30+ feet from shore. I kicked right through them and they barely even scattered. I guess they figure there is safety in numbers.
  5. I noticed that it took a while to revive them as well but I don't mind spending the time after the good fight that they give. I think that as the summer gets closer the days of 15 fish days will be less and less. I never did much trolling with sinking lines out there before this year but one of my fishing resolutions this year was to do more trolling and streamer fishing with sinking lines and I have found it to be quite productive both on the lake and the bow. Did you notice the schools of minnows in the morning out there? I noticed the surface of the water boiling for about a 20' diameter circle a few times last weekend. Lots of food in the lake this year and those fish should put on a couple of pounds over the summer. (as if they are not fat enough already!) Should be fun.
  6. Hey, if you can get them on the dry then take advantage for sure. I never tried dries and I guess I should have. I was going to try a slow troll with the Damsel nymph but I ran out of time. It could be worth a try I think. Are you going out again soon?
  7. No wonder the fishing was off, they all had sore mouths from you Rob. Sounds like you had fun. I experienced that a couple of Saturday's ago though so I can't complain. What's the biggest you have landed so far? 25" for me but I'm sure there are bigger.
  8. Hi Harry, I was there this last Sat. with Calvin and Russ and it had slowed down quite a bit. I only managed 2 fish in about 4 hrs. of fishing. I think the menu may be changing as I did see a few damsel's flying around and some nymph's in the water. Water temps had risen to 63 deg by noon. I guess it could be that the fish are getting smarter as well. Still lot's of fun and they are still hitting the tan zonker minnow with the silver body on the slow troll. Cronie's were not as effective but I did get one on the black & red. Those slabs sure are fun. Good luck next weekend, Paulie
  9. Good for you Harry! Sweet pics!!!
  10. I think I saw that clown back in March at Policeman's. He let a nice bow sit on the ice for 2 min's before he kicked it back in to the water. Glad to hear that he's finaly going to get his peepee slapped. I called in some poachers a couple of weeks ago over by the southland dog walk. Is it me or does it seem to be happening more?
  11. Another option for the transducer is to mount it to the bottom of a bike kick stand and attach the kickstand to the rails that your seat mounts to. When not in use I remove the bottom part of the kickstand that the transducer is mounted to and put up the kickstand so it's out of the way. I been using it for over a year and it works great.
  12. Not sure how open minded you are but acupuncture worked for me a couple of years ago.
  13. I got out on Dec 5th as well so I'm up to 2 yrs 5 months. Still, it's hard to imagine a nice day after the last 3 weeks.
  14. I have not been checked in Alberta in 3 years of fishing which would be close to 150 times out. But I have been checked twice on the Elk river out of 4 trips. I guess that extra $20.00 tax may be used for good after all.

    November Pics.

How do those Barracuda fight? What wieght is your rod?
  16. Go to Marks and pick-up some good wool socks and a pair of sock liners. Then grab some work boot foot style hot shots. Put on the sock liners then stick one pad on the top of your toes and one on the bottom. Pull the heavy wool sock over and repeat withthe other foot. I have fished in January for 7 hours and this set-up works great.
  17. As I was reading these posts I thought it was February but then I realized it's only Nov. damn!!! Nice fish Brian!

Thanks Russ, I'll remember that for next time. I think people are getting the idea, big fish = big fun.

  21. I've been using a 6wt. 9'6" XP for over a year & it has been my favorite rod for the Bow. Great for mending line and casts streamers, nymphs and dry's just great.
  22. Nice fish Harry, great pictures as usual.
  23. Awesome fish Rob!!! Great sunset shot as well. Well done.
